Can we finally nerf Sniper Shot?

That button is hitting priests, warlocks and mages for 400k hits from stealth with zero counterplay, apparently it’s scaling massively with mastery and versatility which it’s not supposed to, because it’s meant to be a flat 20 % damage spell. It only allows Marksmanship Hunters to abuse oneshot mechanics further.

But at the same time, it hits plates for 170k. There’s a reason why the spell was intended to be % of HP. Either make it hit for intended amounts globally, or do something about armor, there is no reason why there should ever be a 60 % damage reduction difference just by armor alone. MM’s effectively entire spellbar consists of physical damage. As such, it either means that Sniper Shot is broken and hits for weird numbers, or that plates facing Marksmanship Hunters globally taky 60 % less damage from them compared to cloths. Sniper Shot is our hardest-hitting ability, and it takes 3 seconds to get off. For example Rapid Fire hits for barely 60-70 % of that. That’s less than 13 % HP into a plate, if you manage to get off the entire channel (because 170k is roughly 19 % in a 900k healthpool).

You know the problem is low IQ when you see someone complain about F-------- tier spec while other specs do 1m in 3-4 seconds.

It does % damage and has 3 years casttime. I was complaining about it myself but from an objective pov you can easily line it and it really is very situational at best.

It doesn’t do % damage, it bases damage off of a % calculation. My highest Sniper Shot this season was 47 % of a disco priest’s healthbar, based off of Details (in an arena, not a bg, not a random bg). The fact that there is counterplay in certain scenarios doesn’t change the fact that it’s supposedly not working as intended. There’s no reason for the button to have a 30 % healthbar hit difference based purely off of armor type. It’s supposed to hit for 20 % flat, while it hits plates for 15 % and cloths for 45 %.

Take a sniper’s stance, firing a well-aimed shot dealing 20% of the target’s maximum health in Physical damage and increases the range of all shots by 40% for 6 sec.

I’ll just put it here in a bit more articulated manner, since I understand it can be hard to do the math without it being explicitly typed out.
Here’s a 39 % hit, a 38 % hit, and a 41 % hit, for reference. It doesn’t do % damage, it takes % health, scales it with versa, mastery (BUT NOT AGILITY, therefore unintended), and %-based multipliers, such as Hunter’s Mark or Death Chakram, and then some freaking magic happens when calculating armor and it becomes anything between a 15 % and a 40 % hit, depending on your target’s armor and armor modifiers.

You cant run away from sniper call of duty spec. Our spec is infested everywhere, and in 3s our superior shooter spec has the highest representation. More rep than every other spec combined.

DH and their rotten stinky claws are nothing compared to our guns we are armed with.

RBGs were once full of boomies and Sub, their all gone now since our rocket launchers terrorized them back to stealth now you cant see anyone in a rbg match.

Seems this tooltip is somewhat wrong, i dont know. I often hit much harder than 20%. I had 375k snipe shot on someone with 900k hpish.

Yup, as I said, it’s not dealing 20 % damage, it takes 20 % health and does shenanigans with that based on offstats, % modifiers, and armor.

I mean, you guys understand that i was only refering to the tooltip, right? If it hits higher for some reason that either tooltip is wrong or talent is bugged. :man_shrugging:

Aaaand we’re at the point where we needed to be.

Don’t mess with this guy. He has 9 hunters alt and liked the first post one of these. Dedication or obsession? Yet cruel enough to call nerf for his F tier love. Scary. He may be serial killer. I don’t think i will sleep this night.

I mean, realistically, it’s not even a nerf, quite frankly.
First of all it doesn’t evne hit for 20 % into plates, as it’S supposed to, and plates are the no.1 unkillable things for MMs.
Secondly, this insight might maybe uncover some unintended armor mechanic that might have been hampering MM performance into plates, provided there is any, kinda like BfA damage calculations have been broken, and could potentially mean a fix for MM plate performance in the long run. Unless they just blindly nerf Sniper shot into 5 % damage instead and let the PvP talent die.
And lastly, many hunters are nerfing themselves by using this talent instead of other useful talents, myself included, and it also hazes the fact that MM damage currently is just kind of lacking, and especially into plates. If they fix the damage, there will be no reason to take this talent into anyone, and that will further emphasize the lacking damage on abilities that should actually matter - or they redesign Sniper Shot into something more useful, like I had suggested on a post before, although that’s just a fever dream. I have been basing my playstyle around Sniper Shot intentionally because I enjoy it, but it softlocks me into an unexchangable triplet of PvP talents that I can’t take off under any circumstances, and on top of that, the playstyle only is properly somewhat viable in 2s, so I can’t really play rss and 3s anyway and it hampers my personal progress. It frequently happens to me that Sniper Shot is roughly 20 % of my damage breakdown, but ironically enough, I wouldn’t be able to catch up that missing portion of damage if I just used Aimed Shot instead, because it literally hits for 60k without Careful Aim buff into plates. MM is a mess now and needs a rework like plague, but this gets covered by bad players crying they got oneshot out of stealth and especially by clothies that are then able to post their 400k hit screenshots, which is effectively what some of the weaker sub rogues are doing currently and it upsets everybody. If you take this problem away, people won’t be able to cry about it and will stop feeding the illusion of MM being properly playable in the current meta, and it will hopefully receive some love in a manner that might just matter, although that, again, is just wishful thinking, considering what Blizzard has done to PvP in both this season and Dragonflight in general so far.

But yeah, dedication or obsession? The answer is yes.

So the simple solution here is untie Sniper shot from mastery + versatility and make it ignore armor and all reductions . It should also not be able to critically hit .

Yep. It needs to become an armor pen spell. Ideally it should apply an armor pen debuff and replace aimed shot and then balance it properly, but that would mean Blizz would have to put effort into the spec, and that’s not gonna happen. An armor pen tooltip change would be good for starters though.
It doesn’t crit though, the 400k hits from stealth are guaranteed.

I think it would be fun if it also ignored all reductions like pain suppression and others stuff , to always do 20% hp ,but never more or less . Would make it a fun little thing to help hunters work around heavy defensives .
I really liked chaos bolt back in TBC , which pierced trough all shields and immunities .

Yeah, we can dream. That would obviously be nice, but getting it to do armor pen baseline would be a good thing for starters. It is a 3 second cast after all. I’ve had this in mind, but yeah again, this is just me going into my ideal universe in my head where I could design the spec, and this would be one of the changes.

Sniper Shot

  • replaces Aimed Shot
  • +0.5 casttime
  • Trueshot-modified, 2 charges, 12 second recharge outside of Trueshot
  • 20 flat damage into anything always (modified by defensive CDs, but not armor)
  • applies range buff
  • applies X armor pen debuff (same duration - 6 seconds)
  • armor pen buff stacks to 2 if you get both charges off while it lasts
  • not influenced by Careful Aim

And balance around that, or cook it into some PvP overhaul talent which MM would need. Ideally one that enforces petless glasscannon setup oneshotter playstyle, meaning if you do a proper setup, you 100-0, and if you don’t, you won’t have enough damage to kill.

I will admit that i hate MM hunters eventhough i only play plate classes, the reason i hate MM hunters is that everytime they´re slightly overtoned the entire BG population turns into 70% MM hunters per team n while a single MM wont oneshot me as a plateclass, they sit 80 yards away like little pack animals spewing their crap n everytime i get ontop of them they pop turtle n sprint off at mount speed with freedom.

If we make a comparison to say a battlefield game, i primarly enjoy playing with assault rifles n LMG´s n while on a smaller scale i dont hate snipers, if suddenly 80% of the enemy team in a battlefield match are snipers it means not only that im going to get annoyed wherever i go, it also means i have no one to fight with my assault rifle because everyones sitting on the other side of the map leaving me two options, leave the match or play sniper myself.

In season 2 the MM abuse got so bad that i stopped playing BG´s all together, i also want to point out that my ret pala partner got 100-0 in opener by a MM hunter, inside arena. perfect lottery ticket crit rng or not, that makes me hate how the class plays.

To add further insult to injury seemingly the entire MM playerbase keeps talking about how the class has no defensives and needs to global people in order for the spec to be playable which pisses me off even further n makes me wish blizz permanently sent it to PvE alongside demolocks never to be seen again in PvP.

You have the most nuanced perspective on MM i´ve seen from a MM main. I too hope MM gets a complete overhaul rework, but intill then i hope your spec gets puts in F tier n left there intill that rework happens.
