Cataclysm is ending. How was this expansion for you?

With Cataclysm nearing its end, what do you make of the expansion?

What did you enjoy the most and what did you dislike?

How does it compare to previous classic iterations?

My take:

I thought this was by far the worst expansion. The reasons:

  1. Bugs, balance: Lots of bugs and unresolved balance issues made the game feel abandoned.

  2. Raiding: Tier 11 was the only enjoyable tier. The fights were mostly challenging and fun, but not too pretentious. In Firelands, the only good fight was Ragnaros. FL is up there with Mount Hyjal for me because of fights like Alysrazor and Bethtilac that had boring add fights, Majordomo which was filler, and Shannox who was cheeseable. Dragonsoul quickly became boring because the buff was implemented too soon. Most bosses now just fall over now even at 10% buff.

  3. Healer revamp: The changes to the healing game were poorly thought out. Having to deal with both weak healing and mana issues made the game largely unenjoyable. Additionally, Disc Priests and Holy Paladins could still top meters by spamming one or two spells.

  4. Mediocre gearing: Many classes having to retain old items because the new raids did not provide good enough gear for a few slots. Also, multiple item levels for gear overcomplicate things.

  5. Boring dungeons: Deadmines, Grim Batol, Throne of Tides, and Blackrock caverns, the new ZG (abandoned now) and the last phase dungeons are all just not fun dungeons to clear. They are plagued often by long RP or padding.

Overall, this was the worst expansion to date. I would never play it again without major changes, and I would probably skip it in future iterations of Classic.

Let me know of your thoughts!

Overall, I liked Cataclysm, just as I did back in the days.

It did have its problems, obviously, but so has every classic re-release really.

I agree about the hands-off approach from Blizzards side. Too much things got released in an unfinished/bugged state, and for the most part only got small band-aid fixes, or no fixes at all. To me it feels like Blizzard somewhat abandoned this version of Classic after ICC patch launched, to only be kept at life support. Which is not really the expansions fault in itself.

I also agree about T11 being the best raid tier, overall (which is kinda what I expected going in to Cata). What surprised me is that DS is arguably more interesting than Firelands, I expected it to be the other way around, based on vague memories from 13-14 years ago.

The gearing process in raids also felt a bit weird at times. I believe this is a product of scrapped raids like Abyssal Maw, that was supposed to run side by side with Firelands. Another 6-7 bosses with loot would probably have made the gearing make a bit more sense during that patch. Like, our guild saw one single caster ring from Shannox during the entirety of Firelands, as an example. We did an altrun to finish our last legendary staff 1 or 2 weeks into DS and our second ring dropped, and 5/10 raiders still rolled for it, after clearing the boss for like 15-16 weeks.

I do not agree with the healer revamp being poor, though. It’s ofc a matter of personal opinion, but I think the healer revamp made healing more interesting and rewarding across the board. Raid healing pre Cata sometimes felt a bit like playing whack-a-mole as soon as someone took the slightest amount of damage, to snipe before any other healer could get a heal off so you look better on healing parses. In Cata, it feels like you have to plan your healing more, know what spell to use when, knowing the boss’s damage profile, plan your cooldown usage, etc (especially true during the start of the expansion).

I also disagree with the dungeons being boring. Thematically, Cata dungeons contain some of my all time favourites (like Vortex Pinnacle, Halls of Origination, Stonecore). The only dungeons I actively dislike are the new DS ones, since they’re timegated by way too much RP, slow npc’s and that you have to go slowmo and (for Hour of Twilight especially) manually talk to Thrall like 10 times to get him to move on. Deadmines with a subpar group can also be a bit of a pain sometimes.

One thing I really think is overlooked though is the Azeroth questing revamp. I understand questing is not everyones cup of tea, and that some prefer the old way of questing in Azeroth. But I took my time to finish every single zone in Azeroth this time around, and some zones are really interesting. Azshara, Stonetalon Mountains, Feralas, Thousand Needles, Western Plaguelands, Eastern Plaguelands, Silverpine Forest, Hillsbrad Foothills, Redridge Mountains and Stranglethorn Vale all had enjoyable stories, imo.

All in all, I enjoyed this expansion just as much as I enjoyed WotLK, if not slightly more. It’s a shame that Blizzard doesn’t see its potential though, and has barely done anything to work on things, balance things, fix bugs, add things like previously scrapped content, etc. Unfortunately I believe that trend will continue into MoP, although MoP most likely won’t suffer as much as Cata from it since it didn’t have the same amount of scrapped content (well, to my knowledge atleast).

Edit: Oh, I should also mention Vashj’ir as an honourable mention here. I know the community has different opinions on it, but I believe even to this day it’s one of the best zones ever made. It’s unique and absolutely fantastic looking in terms of design and aesthetics. I have played it through from start to finish 3 times during the last year, and enjoyed every playthrough. The only less enjoyable part of the zone is the Naga questline in Shimmering Expanse (relies bit too much of vehicle combat for my taste) and that the sense of proximity can be awkward sometimes. But that aside, I think it’s one of the best zones this far in the Classic re-releases. I really can’t stress enough how unfortunate it is that the zone doesn’t get the ending it deserves, since the quests just abruptly end with no continuation into Abyssal Maw, or something. It definitely feels like something else was planned for it, but was scrapped.

Edit 2: I also wanna give a shout-out to Ragnaros. Although Firelands as a raid felt a bit lacking some areas, Ragnaros as a boss encounter has probably been my favourite boss to progress on this expansion. It required actual progression and learning phase by phase (we got our first kill after like 85-90 whipes) and it felt very rewarding when he went down. Closest thing my raid team got to one of those “nerd screams” in voice comms.

For starter I did not had any expectations for Cataclysm, because I skipped it in actual rimes despite having yearly suscription for Tyrael’s charger mount promo.

Phase 1 was worst launch of expansion in terms of quality and amount of bugs put Cataclysm Classic on 1st place of mismanaged launches and hurried betas before WoD and BfA launches for me. However I kept playing along with my guild as Cata was just a MoP waiting room for me and raiding was pretty decent and bugs were ironed out later on in phase 1.

Phase 2 was like content draught with reworked ZG and ZA barely making any use for alts catch up, however the game was in better shape than on launch.

Phase 3 Firelands launch did better than everybody expected, with most game breaking bugs being eliminated during testing, however minor ones like Alisrazor feathers infer face appearing after fight with her, trade skill interface bug stayed for long as it seems devs gave very limited time for Cataclysm fixing.

Phase 4 DS broke what worked in Firelands (Majordomo fight buff for example) and added quite many new bugs and this time not only in user interface. Fog in outside DS raid areas around Dragon light tower, guild perks, Zanozz fight is broken AF with orb often ignoring collision, were some of many examples and not all are fixed till this day. It feels like they redirected all recources to making final (most likely) phase of SoD and MoP Classic and Cata is abandoned as fixes are very slow to arrive.

Conclusion: Cataclysm Classic is not consistent expansion or great by any means, however boss fights are more interesting in many cases and there is no facerolling content with no difficulty balancing at all, like it was in Wrath with Naxx and ToGC being embarrassment to be called a proper normal or heroic raids, where only final bosses were mediocre at best. In this regard Cata offered better sence of progression that Wrath where only two raids were worth visiting.

MoP is more finalised expansion in this regard and there are far few downside to it besides titan forging and repetive daily quest grind in the start. Eagerly waiting for it while finishing my goals in Cataclysm while it lasts.

Worst expansion because

  1. Lack of communication from the dev team
  2. Lack of fixing bugs
  3. Phase 2 was completely pointless
  4. Prepull stuff gets way out of hands
  5. Phase 4 is probably going way too long
  6. They couldn’t put LFR “in time”

Lets be real, it’s because of the classic team. I don’t know how they managed to have MORE bugs than original Cata.

The expansion and its content itself is fine as it was back then. It is worse than Wrath but not terrible in any way

you can blame the old devs for not commenting on their code enough or the new devs for not understanding and porting properly the old code, i blame the management mostly

oh boy…
i do not like the pvp manager, i doubt they even pvp, in original cata consecutive random bg wins gave 50 conquest points, they never implemented this…and before anyone comes up with any sad theories: how would you feel if they toke away valor points from consecutive rdf runs? and to top it all, there is not minimum ilvl and we can’t kick the clowns/griefers (I’m not saying that we should I’m just pointing out that bg life is harder than rdf and they made it even harder)

stuck in combat for too long bugs that you won’t even see in private servers.
half the time we can’t rest properly inside the battlegrounds because the char will stand up even tho no friendly/enemy spells were cast on you (again, not even in private servers u will see this)
the av trinket exploit
the IoC quarry/oil refinery bug, which gives bonus damage to both teams when alliance plays as horde, these two bugs are enough to turn the tide, which makes the 40man bgs an instant leave for me, on top of getting a disproportional amount of 40man games daily, which means i am sitting out on deserter debuffs for far too long
why does my rogue gets a disproportional amount of Deadmines? (others have mentioned this too on the US forums)
the ore/herb spawn rate, you are better off killing mobs if you want gold
all the pvp statistics got messed up when current season started, i was technically a justicar before the game even had achievements -or that specific title- so i have zero interest in chasing that stuff now, but this is unacceptable, again, not even in private servers you will see such major oops
the general lack of communication and more specifically the continued blizzard practice of not giving a ff about changelogs (again, not even in private servers you will see this, and they don’t even charge for a sub)
I’m for sure forgetting things but i need to login now
added: the demolisher bug, when it will randomly not shoot…bruuuuuh

Cata has been the first time in Classic where i did not set foot once in a raid.

A bit of context my guild saddly died during LK progression in Wotlk (managed to get a boost for 40k) and on mirage raceway of you are horde pug scene is dead too.

So how i spent my time in Cata, making gold by selling potions on the AH, got a bit of gear from inferno dungeons (370 itlv) and this has been Cata for me.

I really see my future really dire for MoP too, sure i could move to another guild, but I am too attached to my guild tag even if I am the only one online now.

Or you can blame managment for not actually saving the OG code… there is 0 exscuse for current classic copy paste dev´s to have ironed out most bugs period…

As for the xpac, just as i remembered… fun at first then extremly repetative !

Worst part since 2019 classic = Gbid / Gdkp and the constant RMT trading scam´s that violate everything in the EULA yet blizz dont have the cojones to ban them !

Long live World of Creditcardcraft !

I am setting up a small team with 2 of my online friends to farm Kael’Thas for ashes of Alar. For this I am gearing a 5th alt allready. Yesterday my pally was 354 in all blue PvP 377 ilvl gear. 3 new dungeons and holy (healers are in demand somehow instead of tanks) and I had 371, 4 more in Twilight random dungeons and I am now sitting at 379 average ilvl. So this alt can be ready in 4-5 days for Kaelthas and Dragon soul norlmal+2 HM as a healer and I can gather offspec in 2 weeks as well. You must be barely playing if your character is gearing this slowly.

I have decided to do dont do the twilight ones, to farm herbs and do the molten front dailys 368 is already more than enough.

I have enjoyed Cata. I skipped out on the first tier of raiding and regret it, because there are some very cool fights there. Firelands is fun, but not as cool. Dragon Soul is decent. PvP-wise I’ve had fun in arena and enjoyed my feral and also tried balance and rsham. With the improved questing I have leveled many alts and also made enough gold not to have to worry about gold ever again.
I’ve had lots of fun, but certain bugs have been bummers…

In enjoyed Cata back in the days and I kinda enjoyed it these days, also some experiences changed due me being older and in another general life situation and due to the dev team not giving a single edited by moderator about bugs.

I generally liked the Quest revamp. Leveling on the birthday realms brought me the reminder how badly designed some quests where in old WoW and how much you had to run back and forth between the continents jhust to deliver a simple letter.
More fight points, and the quests being more synced with another (Not having to run into the same cave 3 times just to kill different mobs as a follow-up) made leveling a more rewarding experience. Althugh as they introduced Cata with the 4.4 patch, leveling was already way too fast to really get to explore the new zones and stories.

I liked the raids back in the day and I still like them, although DS was far less exciting than I remembered it. I agreee that Raganros was a great fight, in comparism Madness of Deathwing seems very boring and anticlimactic.

A thing that I appreciate as an older player now: The size of the raids is perfect for more casual gamers, having 4-6 (P1) or 7-8 (P3,P4) Bosses per raid is ideal to clear them on one raid night, whereas big raids like Ulduar and ICC required 2 dates, especially in the beginning.

But the most critics I see here do not target the expansion in it’s content itself but the lack of effort Blizzard put into it with classic release. And I completely agree. Whole Cata classic was a bugfest and fixes were done very slowly, if they were done at all. The company made it ABSOLUTELY clear that cata classic was the least of their priorities, basically telling the playerbase that they don’t care for them.

So I conclude with mixed feelings. After all, the whole WoW experience for me stands and falls with the people I have with me on the journey. A cool and friendly guild can make even badly designed raids or dungeons fun. And even the best content couldn’t hold me for long if I am on my own.
However, despite of the broad opinion, I really thought as MoP as the beginning of the decline, I didn’t like the raids, I didn’t like the design and pandas are just a disney-like race. I won’t play MoP, if they ever decide to put in Legion Classic, I might return to have a glimpse of it because I never played that one but heard a lot of good.

The same as when it first came out, I played it for 5 minutes, didn’t really enjoy it, so left and went to play something else, though in this case it was more Warcraft as we have the Classic Era realms. Last time I left the game completely.

Pretty good IMO. I really enjoyed it, especially the leveling, pre-raid farming, heroic dungeons and T11. T12 was also fantastic, but T13 is a bit lackluster. I’ve seen many guilds imploding (including mine) at the beginning of DS, but I am really looking forward to MoP which is a superior expansion in every regard to WotLK and Cataclysm.

i do but not for that, i believe you are referring to that lie about how they “lost” the vanilla code…maximum kek, there are standards in the industry, unless we are talking EMP no one is losing code, even 20 years ago…and one does not erase intellectual property to save a few bucks in storage, the code is owned by the corporation and it’s not for any manager to decide. i will never believe someone ordered a wipe to save a few bucks in storage, or the mistake/multiple hardware failure scenario. what’s more likely is that they thought long term and it was more efficient to do it the way they did

If we exclude the absurd amount of bugs (in general or achievement related)
Cata is definitively the best expansion we’ve had since 2019 classic :

  • Raiding is just better, every tier has been good so far, even people who hated Dragon Soul without knowing why just like the raid because it’s properly designed + you have almost no trash packs. Loot is raining in 25 man, difficulty is quite well balanced overall
  • PvP isn’t something crazy, but at least RBG is a thing so it can only be better than what we had in tbc/wotlk (which, tbh, was very depressing)
  • You can still farm achievements since wotlk
  • You can farm transmog which is a really good thing as it incentive people to go back to old raids for more content

So yeah, happy with Cata, sad that it was so bugged and there was so little resources from Blizzard onto it, and starting to get the MoP hype

Worst expansion from all Classic Expansions … so far!

And by worst I mean way worst vs Classic ( Vanilla ), TBC and Wotlk.

I liked it but found it extremely buggy in various stages and felt that blizz wasn’t giving it enough support.

Cataclysm is my favorite expansion and I have great memories from retail, but the classic version is severly abandoned.
I won’t adress the content or balance, just issues and #nochanges

Hunter pets were broken on launch for a good two weeks - could only use 1 pet out of 5
They didn’t add minimap tracking for your current target or for your focus, these were part of the original client
Deterrence + cheetah is super inconsistent : I would deflect a spell but still get a daze
Again, stable didn’t work for a good week after 4.3 launched
And the change to make random BGs not give any conquest after the first win was a change that is not welcome.
It used to be 100,50,50,50… on retail and now its 120,0,0… on classic

There is no concrete way to report bugs or get in touch with developers, which is insane for a company of this size, considering that private servers have bug trackers and are more attentive to fixes.

It just feels abandoned, and only critical issues get fixed. The lack of communication is insulting and I don’t have expectations that it will improve in MoP

I hated it in the first time around and I kind of hated it again now. Started on launch but quit pretty fast. Been playing my DK for few nights now, DK’s are ok but my main disappointment is the way they messed up paladins. I have 2 level 80 paladins from Wotlk era and both are unplayable in Cata. Can’t remember how they were in MoP but I have high hopes they become playable again
