Classic+: Thoughts on adding new classes/races?

I know this is one of controversial topic today, especially after SoD announcement (which is probably test ground for upcoming classic+), but I would like to see what do you all think about some of the “features” which could be on the table for classic+ in general. As for me I really see it interesting, if somewhen along the path of expanding classic experience there will be new races or even classes introduction which are not necessarily something straight from retail but can be in a sense of classic. Some examples could be necromancer class or ogres race. I am not talking about adding some crazy races from retail, but some races which we already have seen in the world. Overall, what do you think can new classes/races be any good to be part of classic+ or it is trash?

Season of Discovery sounds interesting and I’ll give it a go for a few weeks. It’s definitely not Classic+ and I’ll main Era (and others) in the meantime.

Ogres for a horde race!

4 classic Allied Races, unlocked through a campaign that get the players to understand the story, lore and background of said races.

Of course the lore and background have to match the Classic Lore (not current Retail canon).
And they’ll have the appearance they have in base game, not BC’s or later, with Female version based on retro-engineered classic art designs. (Except if Classic+ use modern visuals.)

  • Goblins as Neutral. (Horde favored by the questline)
Priest, Mage, Warlock, Rogue, Shaman (Horde only), Hunter, Warrior

  • High Elves as Neutral. (Alliance favored by the questline)
Priest, Mage, Warlock, Druid, Rogue, Shaman (Horde only), Hunter, Warrior, Paladin (Alliance only)

  • Ogres in the Horde.
Priest, Mage, Warlock, Shaman, Hunter, Warrior

  • Furbolgs in the Alliance.
    Priest, Druid, Rogue, Hunter, Warrior

New class :
MONK (more like the runemasters of RPG, and Monastery Monks, in the gap between priest, rogue and paladin - not the full-Pandaren way)
Humans, Dwarves, Night Elves, Orcs, Taurens, Undead +High Elves +Ogres +Furbolgs

And let the Runes system be used to implement the Hero Class-like features like Demon Hunter, Death Knight, Necromancer, and so on.

  • Goblins
  • Blood Elves
  • Draenei
  • Worgen

incredible creativity.
Also why would High Elves have shamans or warlocks? Completely goes against all known lore

I am fully agree with the concept of giving the lore explaining prequest for any new races and I am also for the point that these races and quests will be “discovered” so even on character creation screen you will not see anything different at start but only after unlock via quest chain for these allied races. And about furbolgs, I think they could be neutral as well, because timbermaw don’t care if you horde or alliance, they just want that you gain trust first by showing that you are not their enemy. Overall good ideas on monk class as well, I completely forgot about this

Completely agree on these four.

No fit would be better than Ogres, High Elves and Goblins - and Furbolgs is a nice way to round it off.

As long as we don’t get any neutral races, any space races, or paladin/shaman crossovers, there’s plenty of opportunities!

Do you mean the elves in Azhshara or Hinterlands, I think the elves in Hinterlands village could get more lore, they are like exiles from the high elven predecessors. Yeah I also don’t understand why add shaman/lock to elves

  • Warlocks to have Blood Elf (sort-of) as playable character, but without having them full playable race.
  • Shaman for Horde High Elves as Spellbreakers (sort of). They definitely can learn elemental magic (they are gifted magicians) as in the Warcraft RPG. One can find evidence of it in early concepts of BC’s quel’thalas: the storm-summoner statue at the entrance of Silvermoon, and the water elemental (Aquantion) tradition in that lake…
High Elve shamans dominate and bind the elements - thanks to Arcane, but they still do.

Yet I think there should be more Race-Specific spells like Priests’ for other classes. It was the spice of Classic!

So instead of Bloodlust, the HE Shaman would have something like “Sun Imbuing” or “Leyline Convergence”.

I agree Timbermaw Furbolgs are totally neutral…
Ha! If so, we should think about a Pure-Alliance race as counterpart of the Ogres now.

  • Earthen then? (Retail The War Within theme intensifies)

Nah that’s stoopid (- I mean Worgen)

Draenei from BC would be…fine but with a rebooted lore.

  • Race name: Eredar. - Just an “old ways” faction that turned against Kil’Jaeden and Archimonde. No Light-worshipping, no space travelers! Warp-dwellers (I mean Twisting Nether*)
    Arcane users, Horde-leaning.

Now that makes another race to imagine as counterpart for Alliance…

  • Dark Elves? Like, the Nightborne retconned as a race of Deep Elves / Sea Elves dwelling in the classic’s SUNKEN city of Suramar (underwater arcane dome)

No new races but classes should be expanded to include TBC combinations.

Before making utter mess from a factions with addition of weired race-class combos please note that seasonal servers will have very volatile population. Add faction meta on top and you get a really bad situation where one faction can completely die out due most rerolling and the rest quitting because of that trend.

Devs should create new quests and NPCs that introduce the need to join efforts with rival faction to create cross faction PvE groups. This way you would have less worries of introducing shaman like hight elf spell breakers to the Alliance and could get an Tauren shaman mercenary instead (if party/raid leader is Alliance) with NPC in Orgrimmar buffing shaman to understand common language. Maybe there should be some language skill secondary profession to understand other faction races without the buff.

I’d like to see all options available for class/race choice but in a perfect world I’d like to see racial abilities removed as I think they are to strong an influence when designing your character. I know I tend to play characters that I either like the aesthetic of or have to put up with a silly looking character. Eg, as Horde I LOATH Undead and Trolls, I enjoy priest but I’ve never played a Horde Mage as a result of the poor aesthetic and I really hate the Alliance questing experience. Playing my priest was great gameplay but I felt nothing towards my character looking like a rotten spud sack no matter how good my gear was. I later changed to be a Panda Priest.

At the very least I’d settle for the retail options and I’m hoping that I’ll be able to roll a Tauren Paladin!

I’ve been playing since day 1 (on and off) and I’ve no clue about ANY of the lore in game. I’m dyslexic and the text font is unreadable to me.

  • Dracthyr
    -Mechagnomes
    -Vulpera
    -Void elves.

Not these, these are retail stuff, I would talk maybe about ogre?

This may be already addressed in SoD with the runes that give opposite faction Totem’s effects and Benedictions effect.

But I do agree, some sort of crossfaction cooperation should be introduced for PvE content, on PvE realms, as Alliance-Horde total war was not a thing in Classic lore (few years after the battle of Hyjal)

I have to disagree there, Paladin Priests sure could be added, as there are already Loa priests for trolls, there should be Sun priests for Tauren. But Paladin is design-breaking for the race and for the faction.

To feed this troll, I’d say

  • I dislike the idea of a classic race of Dragonkin, why not but waaaay later than other more grounded races
  • Mechagnomes are pure fanfic (it’s retail wotLK lore) and I would have Gnomes get a very different background if I could
  • To imagine classic version of Vulpera is both fun and cringe
  • Void Elfes no - but Dark Elves (classic version of Nightborne, using pre-WCIII lore) yes

Well i dont mind that given everything will be fun and crazy, that is just another small thing that could be refreshing for classic, BUT the problem i see with it is when its time to close the server and we are present with the option to move to ERA …it will complicate things more. Imagine u played Undead hunter… they have to enable the option to select a race/class combination within the limits of ERA or something like this. Also i would not like stuff that are not in the game like Ogre or whatever… but i welcome stuff like night elf mage or tauren rogue and so on.
Basically id like only vanilla race with just more options to be different class and thats it, no ogres, foxes, monkeys or whatever bs

Race: high elves
Class: Demon hunter

No pandas, no monks and no drachtyrs.
