Hello again! And no, I’m not doing any cheese stuff for once, at least not at this very moment.
Combat RP, emotes between duels. What is your take on such a thing? Are you one who’s simple and to the point or are you one of those who like emoting that they do the typical fantasy “Twirls sword around waist with the speed of light” type stique.
Or who knows. Maybe your one that actually fights using medieval/renaissance weapon styles, like locking people’s blades with the hilt, or using the hilt as a weapon, “End them rightly” and so on.
Note: When I mean hilt I mean the cross guard.

Swing a fist at them.
If that doesn’t work, swing a sword.
If that fails, then you can always rely on the divine fury of An’she’s fire.

I draw inspiration from various sources for this.
IRL techniques are useful, because if they worked IRL, chances are they are possible to do in WoW as well. Making up fantasy things is a bit harder, as WoW is inconsistent and has troubles with making up its mind on what you can and can’t do.
In particular, For Honor is a game that has good balance between fantasy and realism, I think, and I use equipment and fighting styles from there as the basis for some of my characters. It provides a good starting point.
Otherwise it varies with character. Chieun is a bit more on the realistic side of things in terms of approach, but still uses super-high fantasy equipment, so you end up on that side of the spectrum.

I just emote what’s needed rather than blowing out five paragraphs of garbage. Do what needs to be done.

Dodges extremely overdramatically, spending a good ten minutes writing a sixteen paragraph emote detailing the movement of every strand of hair.

This is the ultimate way to defeat Bearan in combat
Because I’m too lazy as a player to read your response and will just Give Up
No need for spins and twirls when you cast magic. You just got to cast the biggest spell ever, then proceed to be shanked to death by a peon with a butter knife, as he won the roll

I prefer to keep my emotes short and to the point. No longer than a paragraph and a half long, most of the time not even a paragraph long.
Fancy words and redundant descriptions and text bloat are not really my thing.
Depends on the game and character.
In something like SWTOR where you can play magical knights with the ability to damn near leap buildings, I find the idea of ‘realism’ to be inane. The primary melee weapon is already unrealistic so going on with “yes but physics wouldn’t let that” blah blah blah is just needless babble. It adds nothing, achieves nothing and works to actively undermine the very setting. So go nuts, you’re a magical space wizard.
In LOTRO unless playing an Elf I’d got for a more realistic approach, how the weapon would work, what a person could probably actually do etc as the settings a -bit- more grounded, mostly. Unless you’re a main character.
In WoW I go for a mix. My rogue, oddly, is more grounded in her fighting style. She -can- call on the extra bells and whistles WoW says her particular craft has but she rarely does. My other Troll, who is the same ‘class’ though using a different IG class is much more “magical” in her approach.
So yeah a sort of situation dependent approach, sometimes adapting to whatever the other persons doing. A bit like how the character actually would oddly, keeping what they can do hidden and only showing what they need to.
Emote wise, opposite to my posts. Short, to the damn point and no fluff. Don’t need four paragraphs to describe how you held your hilt. It’s a waste of words that damn near everybody will forget in about 20 seconds anyway.
Veteran of the First War to the present in full plate wielding a sword and shield
vs
A malnourished farmhand with a sharpened stick
The latter: “((So we’re rolling right?))”
And people wonder why I think raw /roll with no modifiers at all is the stupidest thing ever. I’d rather do free emote and tangle with guys who godemote and refuse to get hit, thx.
the warlock looks at the challenger, dumbfounded by their stupidity, flicking a hand he condemns the fool to a burst of nightmarish dread and fear, and walks away, thinking about what to eat for dinner
I try to avoid combat in my rp, I duel with words and beliefs.
combat rp = rlly cool
combat rp in the middle of busy rp = lame
combat rp with strangers = lame
I enjoy it a lot, and like to really push it to the end, but it’s important to know that 99% of the time your opponent will be a sperg OOC, who thinks you are a sperg OOC.

Winnin’ cos I’m da biggest an’ the strongest!
Combat RP has its time and place, but I generally try to end it as quickly as possible if I’m stuck emoting it out. Blocking/evading/warding (in the context of magic) incessantly makes for very boring encounters in my opinion, so I would rather lose early and save myself the hassle. I think the RP after a fight is typically more rewarding than the occasional conversation during battle.

I’m honestly on the time and place for it, something that has a build up, needs to have the right amount of emotes and time. Two people of equal strength and statue meeting on the field who are even in strength, fight should be have some care, Although I’m also on the line that if your emotes more then 2 whole talk boxes long? Trim it down abit, you’re looking fancy in S***
A Bar brawl can be a few quick emotes. If you are writing a paragraph on a dodge, that lasts more then a few sentences, the bar brawls already boring.
I like to do it in a training/bonding context more than trying to beat up some guy on the street, but when there is a fight I try to make sure that something cool happens for both parties involved. It’s supposed to be fun! So I prefer emotes, it’s easier to control the situation and make the enjoyment mutual.
It’s something best done sparingly in my opinion, though usually I avoid it because my current character doesn’t like conflict and I’m finding that just as fun.
