Completing the Time to Fly quest as a horde Troll in Zandalar and getting a flying mount

After reaching level 30 as a horde Troll and returning to Zandalar I got the “Time To Fly Quest” and was sent to “Beast Handler Katalak ”. So I went to this npc and talked to him and clicked the “Complete quest” button. From what I can gather I should get a flying mount at this point, but I don’t appear to have one! Also, the game leaves it completely unclear what I should do next after this quest. Oh, and I appear to have an “Expert Riding” spell, which appears to do absolutely nothing. And there is a “Dragonriding basics” spell, which also appears to do nothing. My character appears to have no mounts or pets except for a frog and a rabbit… Okay.

I am fairly new to World of Warcraft so I don’t really know what is going on or what to do. Also, there appears to be a lot of information online, but it is hard to find something that appears to be relevant to my question.

Welcome to Azeroth!

I can safely say that you are not “fairly new” :smiley: - you will be entirely new for a year, year-and-a-half. World of Warcraft is a BIG game. :smiley:

Despite that, you presented clear information, which is better than 90% of beginner questions, so :+1:

Look in your bags. Type B or click the Backpack button toward the bottom right of your screen to open your bags.

In your bag, you should have an item labelled “Reins of the Scarlet Pterrordax”. Right-click that. It will disappear, and the mount Scarlet Pterrordax will appear in your Mounts list.

Now Mount it and ride. The Space bar makes you go up.

Incidentally, I just looked at your armoury https://worldofwarcraft.blizzard.com/en-gb/character/eu/turalyon/grompazz/ and it seems to me that you haven’t been putting on the new better armour and weapons you should have been getting as you quested.

While you are in your bags, try right-clicking any equipment better than you have. This will put it on, and make you stronger.

Gear Quality is shown by colour. From worst to best:
Grey = Poor (lowest)
White = Common
Green = Uncommon (Better. You should be wearing mostly Greens at 30)
Blue = Rare
Purple = Epic

Apart from Quality, each piece will have an Item Level. In general, the higher the Item Level, or the more Strength it has (Warrior wants Strength!) the better it is.

If youare having difficulties, I will be happy to have one of my Horde characters meet you to help with whatever I can.

Meantime, let me suggest the site Wowhead.com if you need to look anything up

OR you can look up any quests, itens and so on on YouTube.

For a beginner, I recommend this video:

it is MASSIVELY long, but broken up into 30-60 second chapters about different aspects of the game.

It is also out of date in that it was made just before Chromie Time was introduced, so it dosn’t cover that.

But it is very well made, and may make you aware of aspects you wouldn’t even think to ask about otherwise. You can then simply search YouTube to get more detail on anything you want to learn more about.

I find that searching YouTube is often the most practical way to find out about pretty much anything in the game, but you do have to be careful about getting the CURRENT information. Blizzard update classes and systems every expansion, and in a smaller way every patch. On the other hand, there are quests in the game that haven’t changed since 2008. So, look carefully at the video’s date and be conscious that some things have changed, and others haven’t.

If you want to know about the story of Warcraft, which spans tens of thousands of years, the previous games, and novels, you can look at Wowpedia https://wowpedia.fandom.com/wiki/Wowpedia or channel Nobbel87 on YouTube.

Thank you for you kind and helpful answer, and well the reason I said I was “fairly new” is because World of Warcraft is obviously so huge and complex it would take me months to learn everything about it. The fact I overlooked putting on better armour confirms that. :slight_smile:

I think I figured out how to use my mount now. This should come in handy for exploring and getting to places.

Well, please ask any questions, or for help, here or in the Newcomers forum https://eu.forums.blizzard.com/en/wow/c/guides/new-returning-player-questions-guides/236

I and many others will be happy to suggest, and give any direct help you need. Also happy to set you up with better bags and gear.

It takes a loooong time to truly master this game - if anyone ever does! - but I think that the most fun time is while you’re a noob, before you get jaded about everything and start complaining about all the little stuff, so enjoy your exploring and learning! :smiley:

Oh, how do I get better bags?

Bags. Yeah.

Personally, I buy 4 Netherweave Bags from the Auction House for each of my new charcters. https://undermine.exchange/#eu-turalyon/search/cat=1

And nowadays a Reagent Bag as well, since I usually pick up either Herbalism or Mining professions (sometimes both) on a new character. It allows me to get extra experience (XP) as I go, and some extra gold from selling what I gather on the AH.

I see prices of Netherweave Bags on your realm are about 13 gold each. That’s nothing for a high level character, but maybe you havn’t collected much yet? Your gold amount is shown on the bottom of your first bag, the unchangeable Backpack.

If you want me to pop in and get you some, just say so!

“If you want me to pop in and get you some, just say so!” - What do you mean just “pop in”?

I mean log into the game on a Horde character.

BTW, here’s the section in that video above that talks about bags, inventory and banking

I will look at that video when I have the time thank you. Also, I believe I managed to equip my character with better armor, could you confirm that for me?

And, I purchased new bag slots! :slight_smile:

I can’t confirm the upgraded armour. The website does not try to update your armoury page until you log out of the game, and even then it might update immediately, or can take some time. So you may have upgraded, but I can’t see it on the site yet.

Did you buy new bag slots, or new bags? You can buy bag slots at the bank, yes. And you can then put bags in them.

You can buy new bags at the Auction House, and then you can put them in the slots in the bank, but I think your more immediate move would be to put then in the bag slots of your character, so that you have more spece to store items as you get them.

I bought new bag slots at the bank. I will be logging out in about an hour. I won’t be online for several hours then.

Now I can see om your armoury that you have upgraded several pieces of your gear. :+1:

That’s great! :slight_smile:

PS:
Well, I watched the video all the way through. A lot of it sounded familiar but there’s also a lot of new stuff to take in. Also, I leveled from level 30 to 34 just by flying my mount all over the maps and discovering new locations! :slight_smile:

Flying all around is a really fun thing to do when you first get flight. I remember. :smiley:

You will find, though, that you will want to do quests for gear to keep up eith your level, since it becomes harder to kill things when you are overlevelled and undergeared. This will mostly kick in when you are past level 60, though, so you still have plenty of time.

Oh dear, I didn’t really think about that, thank you for warning me. However shouldn’t I have an advantage in zones with a maximum level of 30 when playing at level 35 even if I am undergeared? Oh, and I think I explored just every corner of Azeroth (not literally all of it probably) but most of it, so I need to think of another way to level anyway. :slight_smile: I still have some outstanding quests I got frustrated with (one of the reasons I started roaming around) - if I find I get stuck with one of those again I will return to this thread and ask for advice, okay?

Yes, absolutely. At 35, you get the “Legacy Buff” in level-30 zones, and become Godlike. But you also lose any chance to gain XP and progress, so you will need to move on.

Getting a few levels without a gear upgrade is not a problem. Just be sure to include some gear-getting activities before you hit 60. :smiley:

As for exploring, you have barely any Exploration achievements yet, even in the original zones :stuck_out_tongue:

much less the various expansions that Chromie can send you to.

BTW, as an Arms Warrior, you want a two-handed weapon, and some of your spells can’t be used without one. You have a very nice one-handed weapon at the moment, but keep an eye out for a chance to pick up a two-hander.

Absolutely. Advice, or practical help. I can log in to the game and meet up with you if needed.:smiley:

Shouldn’t my mining and botany skills and exploration still earn me experience in level 30 zones? Also, I can still get useful items and in-game currency even if I don’t gain experience, correct?

Well, I never claimed I got all exploration achievements, I said I had explored what felt like most of Azeroth, but definitely not all of it. XP

And like you said, I got my *** handed to me in zones where enemies can be of the same level as my troll due to being overleveled, however in max. level 30 zones I am slaughtering opponents with ridiculous ease. :slight_smile: And finishing the max. level 30 zones would still be useful even without experience, correct?

Exploration will still get you XP in lower zones, yes. So will Archaeology. I think Mining and Herbing will, up to a point … I know how it used to be, but it may have changed now. Pet battling will also get you XP., as long as you are using pets of the local level.

Your Troll is not so much overlevelled as undergeared for your level at the moment.

Certainly the max-30 zones will also get you some gear upgrades for those remaining Whites. :smiley:

Well, after some fiddling I managed to register with Wowhead, for some reason it first claimed it could not find my character and now it is babbling about a resync. Do you know what is going on?

Anyway, I think I will busy completing all the quests in the low level zones for the time being. Even if the experience stats won’t increase much from it my Troll is getting richer by the moment! :slight_smile: And I think I found some better equipment too! :slight_smile:

You registered for Wowhead? I hope you didn’t use an email/password combination you have used elsewhere, especially in WoW itself. Fan sites don’t have the same level of security as major corporations. WoW is a multi-billion dollar game with millions of players, and you would be surprised at the value placed on access to accounts, and the levels of hacking and phishing that goes on. I certainly was when I started.

It can definitely find your character.

I don’t have a Wowhead account myself, but I recall reading that fan sites often require you to do something like remove your shoulder piece of gear on your character and log off, so that they can check that the change they asked for was made, so they know the character actually belongs to you. Is that what’s happening?

Yes, your character has better gear every time I look at it. :+1: Do keep an eye out for a two-hand axe or sword or mace as you slaughter your way through the zones, though!
