Consider placing your character into difficult circumstances more often

Let me be clearer, I think it’s cool and magical that people can come online and use it as a form of escapism from whatever sh** is going on in their lives. I’m not devaluing that aspect. It’s priceless. But that isn’t the topic of this thread. The topic is how do we avoid sedentary role-play in already sedentary hubs, and my suggestion - whether you like it or dislike it because of the mild-mannered way I’ve phrased it - is grounded in a very real issue. Most role-play that goes on in hubs is banal and shallow, wouldn’t it be better if it wasn’t? - That’s my two cents, and I’m glad this thread stirred up some emotive opinon, at least.

Yes, it would be better. For who? That’s the main issue.

Everyone has different preferences and standards. What you consider “shallow” and “banal” may be interesting and engaging for others. It’s like having a different taste in movies, although we can all agree that the Emoji Movie is the worst piece of media ever fathomed in our age.

There doesn’t need to be tension as much as there needs to be a narrative for RP. There can be active RP without something going wrong for someone else. That is one possibility of many that could provide healthy roleplay, but if it’s the only way to RP, then every new problem someone has is going to be less and less engaging.

What makes for good roleplay is diversity. My character can be content with himself and also have problems, but that doesn’t mean that the best scenario for me to roleplay about should revolve around those problems.

Besides, the playable characters might be referred to as “Heroes”, but it doesn’t make it mandatory for you to roleplay as if you are one. It’s a shame that you can’t find engaging roleplay, but do remember that nobody is obligated to provide you with substance for roleplay. If you truly wish to roleplay with tension, then have your character create it.

Furthermore, if all roleplay was full of tension and excitement, then it wouldn’t be as enjoyable. You know the saying “Too much good is bad for you.” There needs to be non-heroic, non-dramatic, casual roleplay in hubs, so that when the time comes for the large, engaging and dramatic roleplay, then it will be all the more enjoyable.

Anyway, my name is Jeff.

I am not entirely sure if the point of this post went over my head or not.

But, depending on the situations - yes, putting your character in dangerous situations is something that can be quite fun. Look at Rogmasha’s capture. It’s interesting RP.

However, not all people who hold power want to engage in situations like that, no matter where the power comes from. And if that isn’t what they wish? That’s okay.

Just because person A or B doesn’t put their power to good use doesn’t mean they can’t have tense RP. If they’re a known character that has powers, ask them IC maybe why they’re wasting time. That can lead to other RP which might turn tense. Why would a knight idle around in Stormwind (assuming he wears armor all the time) for a month or so doing nothing? For example.

On this topic too I feel like more people could go out in the world on their quests, journeys and adventures, but there is nothing wrong with people wanting to be in a RP hub either.

But in the end, it’s up to the person how they roleplay their character. If tension isn’t what they seek they shouldn’t do it.

At least this is my opinion  I hope it didn’t get on anyone’s nerves.

OP has a point - I feel like there are loads of players on AD who play characters with negligible flaws who always end up on top and don’t really have any negative personality traits

This leads to the kind of RP you might expect from Habbo Hotel - they play an avatar instead of a character

Obviously people can play their characters how they like but I definitely think a character with well played flaws is just a character of a high order / calibre

Don’t diss Habbo Hotel role-play.

If you come here and announce that you’re socially inept and then get offended when someone agrees that you have a problem, I really think you have only yourself to blame. I’m not insulting you by literally repeating what you’ve already said back to you. If you read back through my posts, I never once said socialising via WoW is an issue until you brought it up. I could say something here about playing the victim, but this’ getting old fast.

I already mentioned it in this thread, but I’ll say it again to drive the point home.

Flaws, virtues, strengths and weaknesses. It comes down to the player’s discretion, you can have a different set of standards, but that is how role-play is. Nobody is forced to play with anyone. I agree with Perroy when he says that a character with flaws and interesting concepts is of a higher caliber, but again, that is MY opinion, and it may not be shared by others.

This is why the distinction is difficult to make. You can’t point it, because everyone’s opinion differs.

Edit: if someone comes to you and wants to role-play with you, then they’re the ones attempting to play with you and then it’s their own fault / problem if they don’t agree with the way you’re carrying out the role-play. Again: Just. Use. Common. Sense.

Speak for urself, the leader of the Horde has basically no positive traits and only flaws

We need more truly irredeemable characters like that

Is there anyone who would honestly make the claim that “characters with no flaws and boring concepts are of a higher calibre”? Honestly that’s not even on opinion man… it is the truth …
