Consumables

So Naxx is out and I’ve been looking forward to finally killing KT but the thing that is putting me off is the price of consumables I mean realistically how many people can afford to raid weekly with the price they are at currently at.

I play Lock with a guild that isn’t super hardcore, we didn’t clear Naxx in the first week - We went in and killed 8 bosses and had a few wipes here and there.

So just to give you some indication of current prices:

Major Mana Potion - 10g - Yes I have life tap but theres a few fights where I won’t be getting the heals I need so I do need to pop these.

Greater Arcane Elixir - 18g

Elixir of Shadow Power - 14g

Brilliant Wizard Oil - 19g (I know I can use the oil from the event but that is limited)

Stack of Runn Tunn tubers - 60g

That’s just the standard consumables that doesn’t account for Flasking (350g), GSPP (20g), GFPP (8g) or GNPP (15g).

So for 1 raid night that will cost me:

Just basic raid consumables: 449g
Basic consumables+1 Flask: 799g
Basic consumables+1 Flask+Greater protection potion: 1029g

Does anyone else think that’s a bit excessive for a single raid? I mean it was definitely more managable during AQ40 launch when the price of Greater Arcane Elixir was 12g, Shadow Elixir 9g, Major Mana 6-7g, Wizard Oil 15g, Runn Tunn Tuber 25g and Flasks 230g-250g but with Naxx the price has almost doubled on every single consumable and I haven’t seen this happen for any other raid (BWL/AQ).

How many people do you predict are buying gold to keep up with these prices? I gotta admit I do feel like calling it a day as the time investment just doesn’t seem worth it each week and if I have to fork that out every week until TBC then I’d rather not.

How? I was happy when I managed to sell a stack for 4g the other day.

P.S. You may want to consider major rejuvenation potions instead of major man as a warlock.

10g for a mana pot is crazy. I’ve seen a server were they are 1,25g. I personally have herb/alch so I tend to make my own. Got about 100 of them in my bank.

I will agree that the consumables are expensive. I’ve never used as many as I did last week in Naxx. I do however think that you can do without all the spell damage ones. You just need to survive to get the boss down. In some cases it will be a dps race but everyone got such good gear by now that it’s not needed.

If you planned on raiding Naxx you should have stacked on consumables way before phase 6 while most of the mats were relatively cheap. It is perfectly normal for the relevant prices to go heavily up right before and during the most recent content. You either prepare beforehand or enjoy farming way better and longer for the same benefit now.

Naxxramas. the final vanilla stop. Everyone knows it’s expensive. You get to pay vast sums as a down payment for the possibility of phat loots.

saying that I’ll never see inside it but I can’t say I care, I recently got my Argent Dawn tabard so I’m happy. :grimacing:

As a lock you should at least have mining and be able to easily farm DM:E for Arcane Crystals, that should be enough to cover most of the costs involved.

I used to do it on my paladin but I gave up. The RNG is just such a grinch I can’t bear it.

If you are going to have a gathering profession these days it’s herbalism. Even as a warlock. As a bonus you won’t have to respec, saving you atleast 100g per week you would spend respeccing for solo jump runs and back to raid spec.

Not many. But the prices won’t be as high for long.

Naxx is famous for being consumable-expensive. You had more than a year to stash some.

There is really no need to have a gather spec.

I have learnt to do it as a Paladin which means you can only use Exorcism and Holy Shock (if holy) if you don’t want to go oom and even then you need far more time than a mage/lock to clear this.

If you are mid-core raiding you should also have eng which means thorium bars can be used to craft the shells and if you don’t use the core of elements for the invasion quests you can also sell those (and the plant stuff) for extra money.

Even if you don’t respec, 20 minutes of herbalism in scarlet monastry on my mid lvl 50 warrior with quest gear and a lvl 44 weapon will make me as much money as 1 arcane crystals sells for on Earthshaker (80-85g). Mining is a waste of time.

Spec = talents

Professions are another thing and usually you need to ha e eng in order to use sappers, the other is your choice.

I think Richdude is referring to the fact that Herbalism is the better gathering profession for gold overall. Even in DM:E jump runs your guaranteed Dreamfoil and Gromsblood every run but with Mining you can easily go 10 runs without a Crystal and in that time make much more gold than with mining.

I’ve done countless DM:E runs and tbh I’m kind of sick of the place but I did used to make decent gold running it as you get Felcloth, Dreamfoil, Gromsblood, Essence of Water, Elemental Water plus the RTV at the end I was Herb/Mining at one point but switched to tailoring/Engi when AQ40 was released. I’ll no doubt switch to herbalism if I want to continue raiding and I know how to make gold but I was just having a bit of a moan about how extortionate players are currently being when listing consumables.

The same way there could be runs with few herb spawns and few gatherings. To be honest I leveled a mage and got him herb+mining.

Another way to have faster gains right now might be farming herbs in SM since Shadow Prot stuff and Goldthorns are high in demand.

I realised that was what you were referring to after a bit, and edited my post. As a paladin you can cleanse mana drain/dot. The only dangerous part of jump runs. As a warlock you will most likely just end up spending much longer per run if you don’t respec.

Try to clear Naxx without that many consumables then.
Anyway there are plenty of ways to make a lot of gold and having something to spend the gold on is also good. Just banking it doesn’t make a lot of sense…
Also the T3 set consts a lot of expensive mats as well and the Naxx attunement isn’t cheap as well if you don’t have the rep. Money rules the world!

True that. But locks can easily life tap/sacrifice/health stone/dot&los with a pretty fast clear time.

Edit: with my mage now that I got a decency level in my gear I went fire and my way to deal with the last boss is popping cds and burst him down the fastest with dumped magic up. And I get away with it using still the Hakkar sword and some mixed zg/bwl stuff which is far from the bus even for that raid tier.

Let me guess, you are using the reset exploit and pass on 5-10g worth of drops per run?

Used to when I could do it only on my Paladin. And yet it was enough to cover for all the stuff I needed. I started doing this on my Mage (who has both gathering profs) recently.

But given the shift in prices I might have him farming SM instead. Right now it’s worth more.

What about fishing tho? Stonescale eels?
Azshara for some patches of elemental water etc… Is it perhaps bc it is boring?
Obviously u dont sacrifice the two main prof slots for this one lol
I would say it is a good way of gettin gold now… Stone eels being around 3.5g now on my server
