CPU or GPU bottlenecked

Hi,

Not sure if this is the place to post but getting bit tired not able to keep 60-100 constant FPS in SL.

My hardware is little old by now so was thinking to upgrade at least the CPU. Down the line I will probably pick up a RTX 3080 but they are hard to get your hands on nowadays.

So would that fix my “issue”?

Running with:
Intel i5 9400F
GTX 1060 6GB

As the demands on the CPU grow with an increase in fps, I think you could try lowering your graphical settings, and if you are still struggling to maintain 100 fps consistently, then it’s probably a CPU bottleneck. Otherwise if your fps shoots way past 100 and doesn’t dip too much, then the GPU is likely your issue.

Personally, I’d say a GPU bottleneck is more likely. But you can also try other things such as closing all unnecessary background programs to make sure hogged resources aren’t at fault.

Edit: I just tried and for some reason WoW refuses to run over 100 fps even with the limits removed. Even then, just seeing if you can maintain 100 fps constant might be a good enough test to determine the bottleneck in your system.

GPU will be the bottleneck here. My CPU is basically the same as yours but I have a 1660 Super. I never go below 60 fps and am well over 100 more often than not. Everything is on max except environment detail which is on 9 (seems to make a huge difference to fps).

I get 30-100 fps with a pc from 2011 and a gtx 760 2gb.
What’s everybody’s obsession with insanely high fps? Afaik above 35-40 is almost impossible to detect to the human eye no?

Should mentioned in OP that I’m gaming on my “office monitor” which is a ultra wide 3440x1440 100 hz

I don’t know about you but I feel it being pretty noticeable between 30 and 60, as 60 to 120 is also noticeable.

We are on the same page then. The demands on the CPU should grow with fps regardless of your monitor, but a 3440x1440 definitely shifts the weight to your GPU somewhat.

That’s just misinformation that was spread around a long time ago and gained popularity for some reason. Probably by people with crap PCs and people that had low refresh displays. If you had a 24hz display, obviously you wouldn’t be able to see a difference since it can only show up to 24 fps.

The difference between 30 and 60 fps is huge, visually and especially in games, and anyone can tell which is which pretty much instantly.

It still might at least a little bit, but I’d say GPU will be the big player, yeah.

I’m not sure if changing the CPU would be a big win, to be honest. With a GPU upgrade, all you have to worry about is the GPU itself, maybe the PSU in some cases, but with a CPU upgrade you might need to replace other things like a motherboard, RAM and a CPU cooler, so even a relatively small upgrade can have you reaching deep into your pockets. Though my perception on this might be shifted as the only time I’ve upgraded a CPU I went from an i5-760 to a R7 2700x.

Would need a new mobo. 10th gen is 1200 socket.

Fair point, my plan was getting a 9 gen i7 (9700k) as it likely be a good player for some time even if its not the latest. I already use a AIO cooler and on a Z390 so only downside is I would lock myself into a “older plattform”

Yeah, that’ll work though idk if it worth it in the long run cause I think 9th gen i7s are still pretty pricey, maybe more expensive than 10th gen i5 + mobo so probably best to do some research and figure out which gives you best price/performance

To be fair, I do think the difference in fps is overexaggerated quite a bit. It’s not easy for me to see a difference between 60 and 100 fps, and I find myself often only being able to tell the difference by looking at the fps counter.

i7 right now is €280 which is decent i think, at least consider swedish pricing.
Regards motherboard, you have a point but I kinda messed up the stand screws so when I upgrade I likely have to mess up my motherboard or simply switch to a new case.

Have you got a proper 144hz monitor in those scenarios? Otherwise yeah, you probably a minority lol.

I have a 3440x1440 100Hz just like you, I did not bother attempting to overclock it to 120Hz for the reasons stated above. Of course the difference would be more clear on a 144Hz monitor, but the law of diminishing returns definitely applies with higher fps, so I don’t really feel the need to try a 144Hz. Though if a friend had one I’d love to have a go.

I got a 144hz monitor and anything over 60fps I only notice if I really look for it tbh.
I do notice when I switch from my laptop after an extended period of time to my desktop but not the other way around.

Just check how much GPU memory is used. Might be that ultra wide, with max settings 6GB is not enough.

Not sure how much is recommended for ultrawide resolutions but resolution is like THE fps hogger.
So if you’re running big you gotta have big graffcard.
I can probably scrounge up a chart somewhere…
