Cross RP Add-on takedown

For those of you that don’t know what Cross RP was, it was an add-on used by over 2000 people in order to communicate with the opposite faction if both parties were in the same battle.net group.

This was a great way of RPing with new people and for me and many others brought something new to the game. It’s widely used amoungst the RP community in Booty Bay, Uldum and during RPPVP campaigns as a means of quick and easy communication without having to use third party applications. Personally, I’d say it was one of the most important RP add-ons that was available.

With the launch of the new WoW patch blizzard have completely shut down the addon and it’s unable to be fixed or reworked to make the addon functional again. This news to myself and many other members of the RP community is very hard hitting because it destroys not only the RP and stories that were being told but the community based around the addon too.

I’d love if people were able to share their own opinions / take on the situation in the replies. Hopefully with enough outreach blizzard may implement a system of their own or allow for the Cross RP Add-on to make a comeback. Thanks for taking the time to read this.

I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if they broke it on purpose, it certainly causes them less of a backlash than handing out bans. My biggest disappointment is that this is another choice by Blizz that really only breaks the community. Cross faction communication gave many of us amazing moments, both within rp-pvp campaigns and within neutral rp all across the game and it’s a shame we’ll have to do without again.

Terrible news. :weary:

The Cross RP addon has meant the world for myself and dozens of friends. Hoping we can convince Blizzard of the unique benefit this functionality gave to the RP community, and how sorely it will be missed if it’s gone forever.

I am heartbroken… This addon has inspired more RP than ever! I know we are in World of WARcraft but we had so many neutral organizations within this World! The Argent Crusade as a prime example. So it shows the characters can have neutral outlook and would ideally be able to talk to eachother…

I really-really hope Blizzard re-considers this…

For the last 2 public events I organised (Brewmoon Festival and Day of the Dead), Cross RP was an integrated part of the festivals. It was very clear to me that many saw it as a major upgrade to their experience, when they could suddenly talk live in the game with the opposing faction.

I do know that some individuals didn’t to use it, either out of discomfort of sharing their Btag, worries about the addon’s legality and finally the segment who just couldn’t make it work. Therefore it was always my personal hope that Blizzard would eventually see the addon as an inspiration to extend the progress they’d already started. (As we know, elves can speak across factions with Thalassian, Demonic and Darnassian, while Pandarens can use Pandaren.) And simply make it an in-game feature for all RP servers.

With the current story progress of the WoW lore, many (The Horde in particular) considers themselves strongarmed into a story plot they can’t associate with - especially not right after the build up from Legion, where they shared Khadgar’s ideals.
This has lead many to rally together to be inspired by the many neutral factions within the lore: Cenarion Circle, Argent Crusade, Kirin Tor, Earthen Ring and Darkmoon Faire - to create side stories that had more appeal to them. For some, this change of focus towards the smaller, less focal story branches has been the saviour that kept them engaged in the universe, to continue playing.

By shutting this down, rather than embracing community-created content, there is a risk that a minor - but loyal and active segment of players may decide to unsubscribe and find other medias like roll20, minecraft or Discord, to fulfill their desires to creatively unfold with their stories, with less restrictions.

I would like to share a video record that Acrona did live, during this year’s Uldum Nights - She added music and sound effects on the edits, but all the people are players. I think it states a good example of what we can create together, when we’re able to communicate.

Very sad to hear the news that this has been disabled. CrossRP gave a lot of fun to the game, especially when it came to RP PvP and hostage situations with opposing factions and neutral RP too. It added a whole new level to the community, which is something Blizzard claim to be all about. I’m not going to be salty about it because that’s not what this thread is about. It’s definitely a sad day for RPer’s though.

The moment this add on was created there has always been the possibility lurking in the background of Blizzard taking it down. I remember being adviced not to use it at all since your account might be banned if Blizzard decided it was “exploiting” the game too much. I only got it yesterday fully to work, yesterday!

I knew the booty bay cross faction RP was a very fragile one, and this new patch has shown why. RP plots are now being shut down along with the mod, but let’s be honest we all kinda knew the risk that was being taken here.

And who knows, perhaps they didn’t do this purpose and within a few weeks we can all get back to our cross-rp !

This really sucks, since I haven’t enjoyed RP as much as I have while being in Booty Bay for a longer while.
Gee… It’s always something every update to mess a bit extra with us, I feel. But I honestly hope they will allow cross-rp and get it fixed so we can go back to having a blast.

Back to treating alliance characters as air I guess.

Is this confirmed to be the case? Wowhead at least claims that several other addons were broken by this new patch too.

Just re-routing the addon might do the trick? Certainly seems like its the case with most addons.

Unless there’s any concrete evidence that the addon won’t be updated, this doomsaying should quit.

Mr. President I’d like to report an attack on Gamers.

I cannot say that it comes as a surprise. Since Blizzard have been unwilling to create cross-faction communication that someone managed to successfully do so without their aid, I can only imagine that to be an annoyance to them.

They have shown before their disinterest to communicate with the RP community who really are the only ones that are damaged by this decision. While I’d like to believe that voicing opinions about the matter would gain some response I lost faith in that a long time ago.

Honestly?

CrossRP has revived otherwise empty spots within the game, most notably Booty Bay. Before, Horde and Alliance there would be sequestered away from each other, to the point where if Horde were in the bar, Alliance people would stay away simply because of the language filter spamming them with nonsense.

Now? I’ve seen a revival. It’s no hub like Stormwind or Orgrimmar but whenever people were bored of the nobles and guards and knights of Stormwind, or the political quagmire of Orgrimmar right now, they would saunter over to Stranglethorn and talk to people who have decided to either take an active stance against the war, or passively just… be there to meet new people.

Ever since this add-on has surfaced, there have been a boatload of events that were reliant on it. Uldum Nights, the Druidic Moot, the Brewmoon Festival, the Day of the Dead, the Drums of War campaign in Silverpine/Tirisfal that kicked off this expansion, the Ogrepowered campaign that gave rise to the Voice of Azeroth community, and I’m damn sure I’m missing more.

There have even been talks of guilds dedicated to this idea of not being shackled to one faction. It was already the backbone of a lot of activity within the game and the reason why people were still subscribed.

I’m sincerely hoping that this isn’t a way to shut down the add-on and is just a misstep in updating.

The creator of the Add-on did claim that there’s no way of fixing what they’ve done to change the add-on. I don’t know all of the details around how it was changed

Klien, is there any way you can link this public post? I can’t seem to find it myself.

Basically, add-ons cannot access Communities anymore, no exceptions.

Please blizzard, stop beeing so self destructive, you already took almost everything i enjoyed about the game and now you destroy the RP guild which was build to be a neutral guild.
We have our monthly market and caravans (with horde and alliance player), where we always used Cross-RP to communicate
With this you take the last thing that kept me in-game…
I guess i can only hope that blizzard finally stops beeing so stupid and destroy their game…

I’m online at the moment and as of right now it seems there is yet a connection between the add-on and the public Cross RP community. I logged on, activated the relay and received a confirmation message in aforementioned community.

I haven’t seen if the functionality remains but at the very least the possibility to fix the issue may remain - unless that, too, proves impossible.

Well this is infuriating… On a number of levels.

This is damaging one of the funner aspects of RP, going beyond what is possible limited by the game. It damages story telling and community.

It actually kills off a large aspect of my guild. :frowning:

This spoils a whole lot of roleplay I had planned and have been going through. I sure hope it’s able to be fixed sooner rather than later, I’m all for helping the creator alongside others voicing this out towards Blizzard. It’s quite irritating.
