For those of us who use Curseforge there is now a standalone app being tested which does not require Overwolf to run in the background while it’s open.
There is a link direct to the Alpha download in the article below if you don’t want to go looking for it.
It was so nice to be able to uninstall Overwolf (and the previous Curseforge version). Even though it only runs in the background while I have Curseforge open it was still daft that it was even required.
From a user point of view it looks exactly the same as it did before this change:-
I knew posting this would bring out all the doomsayers
I honestly think no matter what they do someone would be doomsaying. I honestly can’t get upset over a non intrusive ad one one side of the screen. I do understand Overwolf’s horrendous reputation ofc. But this has genuinely been no different to using the Twitch App. Less bloat now.
However it was still worth posting for all of us that do use the thing. And who knows some others might try it without the Overwolf requirement in the background while open.
What is the issue with the Overwolf if you don’t mind me asking ? Everyone says it works in the background and contains harmful app but I never experienced that. I open the app for 1 or 2 minutes once a week to update my addons and that’s it. Also using Mac, not Windows if that changes anything.
I didn’t have any issues with it either but Overwolf has a dreadful reputation for selling data and making people’s PCs run badly.
It has had a hard time shaking that reputation when they took on Curseforge. When I had some trouble with one of the other addon managers, I decided to bite the bullet and try it and it’s no better or worse than Twitch was for me. Like you I just open it once a day for a couple of minutes, update and close it again.
The standalone is a great improvement, I’m glad they took the feedback on board.
Yes, thanks Puny.
I’ll give it a go. I’m still using WowUp and almost all my most important add-ons can be updated but there are a couple of exceptions.
Overwolf is feeling the heat it seems. Maybe this is a net positive on the long run, but at this point they’d do better to open up their platform more instead of forcing people to use their own app only.
People are willing to pay to use their API and they aren’t doing anything. They most likely won’t ever get TukUI/ElvUI access, and lots of authors are moving their addons to Wago. I say moving, as in they are also removing their addons from curse.
They caused a fracture and at this point does not seem like they are willing to build bridges after destroying them.
I’ve proposed this idea a while back, which will make it so that we can support addon authors on CurseForge without having to use their apps. Wago is working on something similar if I remember correctly, meaning that I can sub to both platforms and support authors, while also having access to 99% of the addons I’ll ever need.
Personal API key with subscription model
Would it be possible to generate personal API keys when you pay for a subscription? This way we can directly support authors using an existing system (well, once it’s out of beta) while not being restricted to an app that we don’t want to use.
The infrastructure is already there, just need to set up usage restrictions so it’s hard to share. In the future it could even be made so that external parties can connect accounts to their CF account and use an API to fetch the key so you don’t have to copy-paste.
Using the existing infrastructure for the API keys as created for 3rd party addon managers, this should be very little effort to set up. 3rd party providers could then provide a default non-monetized key which users could overwrite with their own. Additionally this would mean people could keep using their favorite addon manager despite being rejected for an API key for whatever arbitrary reason.
Sounds like a win/win for every party involved.
Yes this is a shameless self-plug as I feel like this is in the best interest of everyone: https://curseforge-ideas.overwolf.com/ideas/CF-I-2523
In that case I’m lucky, none of my 39 addons I use for Retail have been removed from Curseforge as far as I’m aware. Some addons have never been available on Curseforge and have always required a separate download.
It is entirely possible that some addon devs are pulling their apps from Curseforge but it sounds a bit of an exaggeration at this point. There are thousands of addons ofc. What addons do you know of that have been specifically removed from Curseforge that were on there before?
People should use whatever they feel happy with to update their addons. Wowup teamed up with Wago, I’ve not tried that myself but I do use the WA updater tool.
