There’s quite a few issues related to players being forced into using Cyrillic letters as names for both the Russian players and other EU players.
- Russian players are referred to as: Russian Hunter / Russian Priest etc.
- Russian players often are denied on M+ or any other dungeon/raid/pvp event because of inability to put a name on them except for the above method.
- (Rated) PvP: Tactics based on names is practically impossible for those that can’t read Cyrillic letters. “Focus on that Russian priest” “Which one of the 3?”
- Russian players are often seen as toxic and incapable of reading/writing English and they’re easily picked out of the crowd because of their names.
- Negative connotations during Battleground such as Korrak’s Revenge; "ugh it’s a Russian pre-made again.
- Searching the Russian players on WoW Armory / Warcraftlogs etc. is a drag
People that play on Russian realms are forced to use Cyrillic letters as names and are unable to use a name in the Latin alphabet. So we can’t blame Russian players for using names like that as they can’t get around it unless they decide to play on non-Russian realms.
A simple solution would be a localized display name such as Twitch uses with Asian names. Example: 测试 (Test)
There was an addon called Decyka in the past but unfortunately it’s outdated and required everyone to have the addon to view the localized names but then again the majority of people wouldn’t even think of looking for an addon like that, or use it as it’s simpler to just avoid Russian players.

They can choose to play on Non Russian Servers, That way they can use the Alphabet so… yeah

Yes, but if you can play with the majority of your native people then most people will. The problem however lies in the players that don’t pick Russian realms but still come across Russian players. That’s where the problems arise…
LOL WHAT. No. I don’t know many Swedes who want to play with only Swedes.

People dont want to invite russians cause 8 out of 10 times roughly in my experience the guy has been a walking joke while playing a phenomenally easy class and still failing it
OR
Language barrier. And no I am not going out of my way to install an addon for Cryllic text when English is the universal language practically.

This is basically what’s wrong with the current system; A huge portion of the players can be a ‘joke’ / not a very good player but you’re more easily inclined to say "This guy has a Cyrillic name so he’s not good/he’s not going to listen to tactics etc.’ than the guy using a regular Latin alphabet name.
I’ve come across several Russian players that spoke proper English, were polite and actually good players but the names basically cause a disconnect with other people.

Why exactly you need to read RU names ?
Makes no difference in the gameplay , for example at PvP you dont call ‘‘Aim for Violetta’’ , you call CC Disc .
I cant find any problem for PvE either .
Its another thing to cry about russians?
Btw its a light addon which translates their names into latin names if its super problem for you.

Okay but what’s your point?
Is this a call to make blizzard show russian names with latin letters?
I’m quite confused.
Slightly off-topic, I think worgen and the christmas hat is the cutest this i’ve seen !
Back to op, i don’t mind them i just wish they were translated into numbers where you can easily call them out, its fine in arenas but when theres 4 warlocks in an rbg its a problem.
@Violetta-Sylvanas: Did you even read my post? It shows the various situations that happen by having unintelligible names for most people. What good does it do to have that in the game which causes the majority of people to avoid players with Cyrillic names? In both PvP and PvE there’s situations that would benefit knowing the names of the enemy players.
There’s nothing in my post that inclines that I’m nagging about Russian players.
@Lxser: A call for Blizzard to give the option for Russian players to have a localized name for easier communication with other groups of people that don’t play on Russian realms. (Or some automatic translation to a localized name for non-Russian players.
Oh wow, is that true? If so, then its absolute and utter garbage system.
Yes, and I do not call it garbage. I call it logical. You want players of those realms be able to type other players name, no ?
Shouldn’t the latin alphabet be something like a basic requirement? I’d say with at least 12 you should be able to read it.

And what that has to do with the ‘Russian language’ realm ? same way I could say - others could read the Cyrillic.
In case of PvP for example - that name reading dilemma goes both ways. So that is not fair say that it is Russian realm players need to ‘change’, when they have never expressed there is a problem.
Since I’ve always been able to read Russian names in wow (I am not Russian in case people think it because of me having character in Russian realm) - it never been issue for me and I do not even know if its because of my windows font selections, Tukui or other magic.
It’s probably more likely that a Russian gamer would learn English than a English-speaking player to learn Russian (or other languages that use Cyrillic writing).
Knowing English is generally more valuable than knowing Russian for a non-Russian player; unless you reside in Russia and/or have studies revolving around it.

The difference is that english is the world language. That’s why you it is on the school timetable, so you require the knowledge one way or another. We only speak here to let them pick an english name, so I don’t see a problem with it.

The moment blizzard decided to throw in Russians with us they should have had a tool server side that would convert the names whenever they are grouped up with other realms. If an add-on creator can do so, I’m sure Blizzard could manage it.
Would help in establishing a better relationship and wouldn’t be that much effort. We’re not asking for a perfect translation tool.

I disagree only with the point about the battlegrounds.
Being forced to play against premades is always a disadvantage. However, even through cyrillic, you can realize that they often don’t all come from the same realm, but they still come from Russian realms.
So the question is, if battlegrounds are created with cross-realms, why are there teams from mixed language servers (English, German, French, Spanish, Italian) and teams from Russian only servers?
Why can’t Russian servers be just merged with all other EU servers?
It may not be a huge disadvantage like playing against premades, but still the Russian-only teams have an edge in communication.
Sure, it is supposed that all European people have a basic knowledge of English, but there are still people not comfortable enough to use a voice chat or take the lead and go through tactics. And, in general, English realms are more heterogeneous. So why a French player playing in a French server can be merged with English teams and not a Russian player?
I happened to see some Russian names in my team, but that’s probably because of a lack of numbers to make a full team. Still the opposite team can be miscellanous instead of one country only.
It is not a bias towards the Russians, it’s simply that when you see a Russian-only team you know you will have a handicap match.
If Russians were just merged like any other players, you will have more balanced matches, regardless of the character used.
