Do casters really need to stand still for casting a ability in 2023?
You might say:
-Ofc they do, they woul’d be so OP in every scenarion if thay would be able to run and cast.
But, cant blizz lower the dmg, tweak the spec’s and make it work? It works for BM hunters pretty well and is one of the ‘‘smoothest’’ playstyle in the game for a caster if you ask me.
As a caster in Diablo and in LoL, DOTA2, HotS you rearly need to stand still to be able to cast. And it works!
Can’t we get rid of the casting? Maybe not for all of the abilities but for most of them? and maybe make those abilities we need to stand stil for be a short cast?
And I do think standing still and casting is out dated in 2023
Just a thought that came to me, nothing more
Sorry for butchering the english language! Have a great weekend to you all!

Generic weekend thread incoming.
If fights are going to have more and more swirlies, movement mechanics and other things to dodge, then it would be wise if not this, atleast to revise movement for casters.
Sometimes I get this feeling where my main gameplay is dodging stuff rather than fighting something.

Some casters feeling more fluid instead
of having to stand around like a turret would be very nice.

If I wanted the gameplay of hunters I’d roll a hunter.
I like standing still to cast. The attempts to optimise positioning and attempting to attack, and the immense satisfaction and massive numbers I get as a reward.
There is a problem though which is that the faster everybody moves, the harder it is to stand still, and it’s become a serious problem to many casters to the point where the game pulls off all sorts of weird mechanics to try to balance it.

Not that much actually.
Most casters already do main damage through instant casts. Casted spells are just fillers.
Might make healers OP tho. Esp. Druid.
But that have nothing to do with what i wrote.
Yes, there is a class that can move and shoot arrows. You really enjoy be stationary?
You wanna be stationary so you can have something that takes long to cast so you can then have big numbers when it hits.
Caster in Diablo and MOBAS got hard hitting spells that they can cast on the move.
Im just compairing MOBAS and Diablo vs WOW here. Why does it work in those games but not in WOW?
I love to be able to move and cast! Who dosent?
Fire mage got that going for em.
The point of casters is to cast lol, its not out of date. Just dont play one if it isnt ur thing

I think u are confusing throwing spells and casting .
Yes, in diablo and mobas most mages can use their spell while moving. But most of those spells are instant , which in wow works same , u can use instants during movement.
Now go look at lol ( i havent played dota in years so idk realy) find any champ that has actual cast as a spell, and u will soon find out that they mostly cant move during cast.
Imo , casters are fine the way they are.
No. They could just make all abilities instant and adjust the CDs and resources accordingly and the game wouldn’t feel any bit different.
Haste affects Global CD and to some degree Cooldowns in general. And if not, just adjust Haste to do so.
Elder Scrolls Online has almost 0 casts and the game still works very well.

There are many reasons, but what you have to understand before anything else here is that WoW and MOBAS have a common ancestor: Warcraft 3.
Warcraft 3 also doesn’t have casts, but what it does have are attack animations that require the character to stand still and much much stricter mana requirements. In effect, every move works like the the wand in WoW and you get to cast like 5-10 spells every couple of minutes due to very intense mana constraints.
So now we’re basically at “stand still to wand”. That’s far more boring and clunky.
I don’t want to play that game. It’s fine casting that amount of abilities and having the stationary attacks in games that control like an RTS and have 20 units in your control at the same time, but WoW isn’t like that at all. That’s why we got the casting mechanic.
It would remove a big chunk of game for casters. Now you need to think about your positioning. Otherwise you’ll lose dps. I’m not sure if smart play is considered outdated in 2023, probably it’s more appropriate to promote reactive gameplay where you don’t need to think, just react, so you might be right. Just wanted to highlight the difference between two approaches.
dps casters should have a spell baseline that cna be cast while moving…like melee auto attack/base attack
Well as a priest even just a door of shadows more would do for me, honestly
They already can cast some spells while moving due to procs, or a spammable but typically weaker spell…
They’d be broken in PvP if they can do full dps while moving.
turret specs are bad that’s why we play with ice floes in many dungeons
Some, yes.
But this is a complex topic and many variables are involved in the mage’s choice here.
I don’t like Ice Floes, by the way. In fact I intensely dislike it. For its bugs most of all, and weird quirks, like the 50% rule and the delay as the server confirms you may now move.
But also because it just adds an extra cool-down to manage and it can change any button, leading to confusion. And I like working out how to stand still to cast. I detest it.
EDIT: well, Blizzard just fixed two of the bugs. It’s still big time awkward though.
