I’ve started to feel disconnected to the games in recent expansions, nothing to do with the gameplay or visuals as they’re always on point. But maybe due to the characters that are now the main people of the game? I miss the hatred of Guldan & the heroic story for Varian, how Illidan and Arthas dominated their zones/stories. The old boys of the horde eg Garrosh and Saurfang etc. I would even go to say Greymane in legion that man was a hunting Sylvanas like crazy. Even Sylvanas got ruined in a way and she was a fan favourite at one point.
With the big characters like that who are no longer here, it feels they never really filled the big spots these character left on the game.
I get characters can’t live on forever but just the game feels lackluster without they’re amazing stories and lore.
Just my thoughts on this, and was wondering if anyone else felt the same?
Yeah, wow had far better themes in the past, such as scourge, legion, iron horde, etc. Even the side stories of some zones are far better than the main stories of the last two exps. Ofc there are also classic Warcraft stories from old games and books, great stories like Rise of the Horde, Beyond the Dark Portal, The Last Guardian, Lord of the Clans, Warcraft 1-3, etc. Now there are no more minor conflicts between factions, let alone wars like this. Not to mention the characters of all these above-mentioned stories.
Wow has not only failed a lot in this segment in recent years, but also many of the old stories have been pretty much ruined.
The lack of men front and centre who are competent and stoic is becoming rather irritating.
There’s a definite pattern to the unfortunate fact that male characters are more prone to being killed off whereas increasingly contrived excuses are conjured forth in order to prevent women from being held accountable for even the most horrific of atrocities.
The fact that all three Windrunner sisters are still around is solid proof of that.
Biggest disconnect was the SL expansion… Just didn’t feel like wow save for ardenweald being emerald dream something.
Otherwise the way they have rushed multiple expansions worth of content as mere patches and side content the last few expansions just killed the mood.
Xavius, Kil’Jaeden, Sargeras, Zul, Azshara, N’zoth all in the the span of two expansions… Like the only old villain we got left is that one dragon locked in time from some book and Magatha.
The way they killed of Tyrion, Vol’Jin and Ysera was just disrespectful. Great they “upped” the up the ante. And then for the rest of the expansion it pretty much played out as usual with everyone using the power of friendship.
Like how many times have she died now, and how many times in BFA/SL should she have been killed off?
Also what’s with everyones obsession for Anduin?
Did Benedictus and Onyxia feed him something while no one were looking?
I wouldn’t think there’s a wild theory that they’re removing the masculine men from the game as i don’t believe they are.
It’s just the story telling and the characters. for example the windrunner sisters are huge but feel so insufficient at the current moment.
A prime example for this Lor’themar such a great character with amazing lore but isn’t used at all? yet we keep getting new characters which we have zero past history or knowledge and will probably be put on the shelf after the expansion… when instead we could build on previous characters we know and have a relationship with.
DF was meant to be a return to Azeroth but I think they’ve missed something key here. The characters on Azeroth are a large part of making it feel like home. I know they wanted to concentrate on the Dragon, the clue is in the name, but they could have done more with orginal characters. Brann Bronzebeard and Harrison Jones should have been leading up the exploration aspect. While Khadgar shows up here and there and says a few lines he could have done a lot more. The Earth Ring (probably led by Thrall) should be all over the Primalists. I think it was a mistake to lock Malfurion away and give us Ysera (when Merithra is prefectly good as Emerald Aspect).
They are at least giving us a Worgen story in 10.2.5 which will be more Azerothian than the rest of DF.
I hope that Metzen will start doing more with the characters we know from years of adventuring together.
Nope, the characters and stories feel just as interesting and involving as they always have to me. Im really excited at the direction they are taking as well to have bigger story arcs over several expansions.
If I feel any disconnect from the game its just because I have gotten older and my playstyle has become more casual just because of how my life is now.
its very simple
50% of it is about your age . since your older now you cant be a fan of childish contents anymore . its normal im like that too
and 25% is the way the game is these days and the other 25% is real life
since we are older we have more improtant things to do in our life than a game
Yeah I definitely feel like the expansions up to Legion did this much better. There’s something about the story and the way characters are written and voiced in the past couple of expansions that give me uncanney valley vibes and I can’t put my finger on it. Feel like the old villains and heroes had so much more emotion and genuinely interesting motives/reasonings. Maybe that’s what the recent expansions are lacking. I think I’ve just answered my own question.
Legion and even BfA to a certain extent did a better job at making you care about the characters. Varian, Illidan, Baine and Saurfang come to mind. SL was, narratively, too ridiculous to take anything seriously and DF, although I do enjoy this expansion, is too tame and characters written like they belong in Power Rangers or Avengers. I just can’t connect with them.
Maybe the new trilogy returns to having a more gritty, emotional and interesting story to tell. The PTSD Anduin cinematic makes me hopeful.
I mean, look at the new design for Alleria. She looks like a Valorant character or like an elf with a huge gaming identity crisis. But not like “Alleria Windrunner”.
WoW is changing since years and the “new identity” surely won’t be everyones taste.
Note how the world of warcraft used to be about its factions, its races, their struggle for survival in a hostile world. And throughout, we had a few big names walking around.
Now all that is gone and it’s a Saturday cartoon that is all about characters. The orcs, tauren, trolls, humans, dwarves. None of them as a group matter anymore. Only Thrall, Baine, Anduin, Magni etc. And they’re all teleporting around like crazy, singing kumbaya.
The world has become very, very tiny compared to back when.
