Dota was created in Warcraft 3

So how did Blizzard lose Dota?

Anyways, they could totally make a MOBA with Diablo 4. Why not? It would become a popular e sport.

And lets be honest HOTS sucks

Was made in Starcraft actually but the most common version is from WC3 yes
What you have to realize is that blizzard never made it, it was player made via custom maps where you the player could make game modes.

In that case Blizzard made a huge mistake for not buying it from those guys. They could totally make their own through Diablo.

The guys who made Dota (short for Defense of the Ancients if memory is right) is the guys who went to valve i seem to recall.
There was a court case about the whole thing.
But yes instead of doing that blizzard should just have made their own but to be fair to blizzard no one knew it would become a gaming genera at the time.

After HotS they are never going to attempt another MOBA.

Long story short: Back in the day they didnt care about it that much and didnt thought that a mod could sprout into such a successful game. Guess why Warcraft Reforged EULA starts with the disclaimer that everything you create in there is basically theirs.

I dunno why they abadoned HotS to be honest, it’s such a huge miss for them, and I don’t think money was the problem there, the game had sponsors, tournaments and whatnot, and they had still tons of characters to go with.

because Blizzard did not make it or own any trademark on it.

Warcraft 3 the classic version was a game made with passion, and it was an open source for all to do whatever they want with no liscensing.

People took that and transformed it into a magnificent amazing thing.

You have games like Line tower wars, Dota, Vamprism, Kodo tag, footman frenzy, hero siege, anime wars, mauls, mazing tds, enfo, etc.

Blizzard neglected it, didn’t even lift a finger to update/ pushforward the game so others took advantage of this and did it > HoN/Dota2/LoL was born.

Sir, this is a Wendy’s.

Icefrog the original creator of dota came to blizzard first but they said no.

DoTA international championship still have higest price pool of all games and still most successful MOBA of all time.

Blizzard missed the MOBA train long ago.

That’s one of the reasons why HotS flopped.

Wc3 dota introduced me to warcraft

We only had warcraft installed just to play dota
So in a way dota introduced me to World of warcraft because i wanted to see more of the ‘heroes’

Because they made HotS and it failed.

Ah yes, DoTa and all other mods were OPEN source. I still remember creating my own maps and sending them to my friends

Then when Blizz saw how much money they could have made on other peoples creativity they decided that everything g you make now is theirs.

That greedy corporate idea killed any creativity and there never will be a mod that will come even close to Dota, why would there if you don’t have the rights to your own creation?

It’s like a hardware store that sells hammers but whatever you make with the hammer is theirs, what a genius business plan.

yes, there was, and though Valve won the DotA rights they had to remove any likeness to Blizzard characters like Windrunner, Daelin Proudmore or Goblin Shredder.

Because they were late to the party and probably had a vision where it will be the next LoL, and that was never going to happen.

Most successful? LoL says hi.

A more difficult discussion would be “which game’s playerbase is more toxic” :'D

Dunno. I still play HotS. I tried LoL but it wasn’t really my cup of tea. DotA looks the same but even more complicated.

In the end I just don’t think last hitting lane creep is a fun mechanic.

HotS was a great idea, I liked it so much.

  • Crossover of the whole Blizzard universe characters
  • Really unique character mechanics, which were connected to characters in “their” universe. Cho’gall (one hero - two players), Abathur (where you sit on one place most of the time) and so on. Truly inventive.
  • Maps with unique targets and side objectives.
  • Casual friendly, it was really easy to just jump into and have fun.

But Blizzard just did some mistakes which ruined it in the end

  • First above all - they were late in hypetrain of mobas. When there is already DotA and LoL on the market, it was really hard to squeeze into.
  • Monetization system. Hiding heroes behind paywall was a big mistake in my opinion.
  • Trying to push in to cybersport. Same is kinda happened with OW also. These games are just designed to be casual and fun to play, but they really tried to made them competitive which brought a lot of sweaty tryhards and evaporated all the fun.

Dota was made in starcraft ruins of strife i think was the map.

Also icefrog someone mentioned the author of the most “popular” dota version is indeed the author or co author of dota2.

Guinsoo i think is at Riot → lol .
