I think what people often forget is that the visage is not an illusion spell but rather an expression and extension of who the dracthyr are. There are plenty of them that use their visage form and even a very sweet exchange between two dracthyr about their visage and how they chose to represent themselves in the Valdrakken dracthyr inn.
I have never encountered anyone having problem with the visage IC or OOC so no clue where that claim comes from honestly.
My own dracthyr uses her visage to blend in better, to not be in a way for example inside smaller buildings and for crafting because the fine small fingers are better to work with than claws.
As for transmogs I would recommend putting on your dracthyr mog first in the barber shop then look for what belts/shoulders fit with it and blend in the rest in the visage form. It is a pain honestly and I still hold a shred of hope we get some improvements.

I did notice that a lot of the Dracthyr NPCs in their visages mostly use the Dracthyr Battlegear from the starter zone as well, if you’re looking for something less grandiose.
Not sure about Dracthyr guilds personally, but I think it’s relatively “difficult” to say what’s cringe and what’s not about the Dracthyr, as a lot of them are new to this world, and learning about what’s new (including the whole landscape ?!?!?!). I guess if you know how not to be “cringe” in RP in general you should be fine just rping a Dracthyr. Just try something new with Dracthyr and see how you find it; there’s not that much “dos and donts” in my experience of reading up on them in War of the Scaleborn/the recent Dragonpedia.
The whole visage conversation could make for some interesting RP as well, having a Dracthyr who doesn’t understand the purpose of a visage. Visages do exist for the sake of making mortals more or less at ease around them (especially in Stormwind where Deathwing PTSD still exists).

Oh I’m mostly talking about the armour you get through questing there, you could probably still transmog it even if you’ve sold it (it’s called something like Emerald Dracthyr Battlegear).
Why not? It is for fitting in better with other races. Why wouldn’t one Drac be curious how other Dracs look in visage? And why wouldn’t there be Dracthyrs that actually prefer their visage form?
I absolutely don’t think visage form was a mistake, in fact, I think there should be a toggle to change it to whatever race you’d like, since that would reflect what other dragons do (Ebyssian is a Tauren in visage form, Chromie a Gnome and so on).
Also, there are lots of Dracthyr NPC’s in visage form, so clearly every Dracthyr uses it.
In regards to using visage form at all, I have two dracthyr who both hold opposing views on the matter.
Vyridine is deeply interested in the cultures and peoples of the world and given that her visage closely resembles a human, she takes great pleasure in pretending to be one if only to better understand them and their strange behaviours. She is happy enough to use her visage when she thinks it will work to her advantage, especially in conversation. Often, however, she ends up giving herself away with a lack of knowledge or the sheer oddity in her own behaviours.
The other is proud and feels that a visage is superflous for, as far as they are concerned, the truest reflection of theirself is their dracthyr form. That and running around in a human-like shape seems a very good way to end up coming under friendly fire given they’re a Dark Talon within the Horde.
When it comes to visage RP sets, I find it best to find whatever you think best reflects their inner self. Dark and brooding, bright and bold, humble and unassuming — there’s enough out there to find something that you feel works on a personal level for your dracthyr. Mail is my least favourite of armour classes when it comes to transmog, which does complicate things, but you can always cheat and mix in leathers or cloth and use a macro to equip them with your transformation.
So update: Apparently I have the Crimson stuff on my Evoker. But not the Cobalt one, which seems way more fitting for an Obsidian Warder? Or even the black one?
These two are, unfortunately, locked behind a reputation grind: The Blue for the Cobalt Assembly, and the Black behind the Wrathion/Ebyssian Reputations. Should be relatively easy to do, just time consuming!
You can also spend a fair bit of gold (not sure how much) just buying Sargha’s Signets or Mark of Sargha (depending on who you want to support) on just getting the rep full to True Friend if you’re lazy like me.
There is an Emerald one, but doing some research (and looking into my own collection) the shoulders and belt are MIA. Can’t remember where the other items drop though.
You get them from the mobs around the Obsidian Citadel, or can buy them from the Auction House!
Sadly, for the Cobalt Assembly, that one’s a full on mob-grind. The tokens drop from the elite mobs in the area, and just immediately add to your rep bar.
The only issue with the dracthyr is the sheer number of people who seem to use the visage form to represent a human or half-elven or half-orc character solely because they like the aesthetic of it.
It’s the old “not a death knight IC” thing taken to another level and not something I personally like.
I see nothing with actual dracthyr walking around in either form, though they should expect people to react organically to whichever form they choose.
