Elvui hiatus in midnight. Please stop this blizzard, open up the API again!

Yes. Since Vanilla.

You can adjust this with addons. If I’m not mistaken you can do this already. People just write their own because it’s easier and for historical reasons. (Original cast bar is so hideous it seems unfixable)

I am using Elvui, since its going to be removed I am starting to adapt to original blizz UI, but I am really having a hard time making everything visible etc.

Do keep in mind that you have to get used to the UI that’s in Midnight, not the current default. The one in Midnight seems to be much improved, even if it isn’t up to the standard of some of the things we have now.

However I did stop using SUF, and next up is Quartz (which I don’t think it will work, but I’m unsure)

Plater goes next.

I cannot remove WeakAuras because my class isn’t playable without it, but my class gets overhauled because of this in Midnight.

I have never been one to overly use addons such as ElvUI. Frankly it seemed too complex and liable to break with any given update. I used weakauras and plater and quartz of course, and I worry how I will go on with their removal, but the Blizzard versions seem passable.

Overll, I just agree with what Blizzard is doing. We got stuck in an arms race between addon developer and Blizzard that stopped being healthy years ago. It’s an unfortunate by-product to Blizzard’s traditional openess to addons from the RTS days but which had unintended consequences for game design.

Finally calling a halt to the arms race and reducing complexity across the board is the right thing call.

This is fine.

to my understanding right now they have gone wide in terms of what functionality they remove. Expect a lot of it to come back during alpha + beta. Even as it is, I have already checked current retail ingame tools do whatever I need once addons I use no longer work. Not the same, but sufficiently. All is fine.

As for specific addons. I also expect UI modification addons that are just cosmetic will work just fine as long as they dont use any specific stuff. I expect this is the reason why elvui wont get updated because it would mean they would have to rebuild it without using these things blizz no longer allows. (edit: if the reason was said in the original links, I dont know. dont care enough.)

Assume something else will replace it eventually. Someone will do it.

All is fine. World (of warcraft) isnt about to end.

Why would they need to change a name?
The mob is called what it is.

I swear… Combat addon users are so weird.

Look at what the mobs are named…

Voidweaver Mage

Voidweaver Soldier

Voidweaver Fat Big Guy

Voidweaver I will nuke you

Voidweaver mini-boss

…

You take a pack of 20 mobs and all you see is “Voideaver…” in the default UI. Voidweaver WHAT? The mage? The mini-boss? WHAT?

And you could say… well just look… I could yes. The guy in the robes is the mage. And the guy with the shield is the soldier.

But when you have a 10 mob pack, which are grouped up pixel over pixel… AND a ret pala doing his usual “disco show”… you cant see anything…

And you could say this is a “1% problem”. But it is not. It’s a problem in M+2 as well. You simply cant see anything…

Blizzard needs to think about how to name mobs or provide some other means.

It turns out all mobs in the game has a class. Show that. Good pace to start. That way in your example the mage will literally have a mage color or icon, the soldier will be a paladin, the big fat guy a warrior, you get the idea.

By the way, this has been the case since vanilla. They’re determined whether they had a pet, had a mana bar, could cast, etc.

People tend to think vanilla mobs were very simple. Not really true…

Thank you, Blizzard, for not going back and listening to the complainers.

Keep up the good work, Blizzard. You’re doing a great job :+1:t2: Take back what’s yours.

Nuking all these “helper” addons has been on my wishlist for a very long time. I’ve raided since classic in 2005. Nowadays addons could tell you what to do, where to go, what to press etc. They took most of organization and skill out of gameplay.

I sincerely hope blizzard sticks to their idea and provides some advanced options through their tools but other than that I hope for all dbm, bigwigs, raid WAs etc to be gone and for encounters to be balanced around them not being present.

And to those saying “blizzard pls listen to the community…” Community is not of one mind and many wish for these to be gone.

And this is coming from someone who has used elvui since it’s inception.

Once I died in a raid because I forgot to update my addon that moves my character, and I had no idea how to get out of a fire. Then I always uncheck the “use defensives” and “use interrupts” on my addon that plays the game for me because it’s more fun like this.

I have no idea how I will be able to play the game in Midnight because even my addon that logs me in the game will be broken. I hope I can learn at least that.

So you argue that bosses like stixx, ovinax and Fractillus are possible for the average CE raider without WAs?

Agreed. I hate WAs with a passion, but they are mandatory for some bosses.

Blizzard should never listen to the community. 99% of the community is cooked.

Atm playing legion remix with no addons and just vanilla stuff as ele shaman. Works well but obviously with addon nuking blizz will have to put in more effprt into customization. They are already aware of it and mentioned it’s one of the areas they will focus on.

Ad.1 For average, no. Possible? Yes, but reasonably so? No. Nevertheless, they want to be able to balance around people not having WA instead of having to balance around WAs.

Ad.2 I use WAs only for CDs and tracking. Never for bosses even when the guild does. I was fine on ovinax without them as a healer and managed.

Ad.3 yup, people and masses usually think they are of the same mind and in the right but almost never are

On mythic? I forgot to add that in my original comment. My bad. You would be the first one that says „I was fine without WAs.“ on those bosses.

We had a few trys on ovinax myth where our rogues WA crashed for some reason and we somewhat managed to coordinate it.
Fractillus myth was simply not possible and I had to leave the raid because my WA wasn’t working properly.
That’s why I‘m asking. It is incredibly difficult for the average CE raider to coordinate such mechanics in a short timeframe. Impossible if multiple WAs aren’t working properly.

Exactly. To make add-ons like WA, Elvui, and the like work, they have to be rewritten from scratch, changing every code. BUT THE CREATORS DON’T WANT TO DO THAT because it’s a lot of work, and also because they don’t get paid by those who download them (players who use them). It was THEIR choice, both from the start, to create them and finally to shut the place down.

So why insult and be angry with Blizzard?

But honestly? other than showing the player’s own buffs the default does a perfectly fine job by now.

Can I get rid of that hideous standard unitframe? I genuinely hate that one with such a passion that I refuse to play the game if that’s what I will have to be staring at in Midnight.

SUF is great in that it’s a pretty small add-on that just changes those unitframes for me and that’s all I want. But hey, according to some people “tHaTs ChEaTiNg”

Edit: damn quotes

The addons are written in a way that either forces Blizzard to allow things they don’t want to allow anymore because other developers were abusing them to trivialise the game, or the addons were directly targeted for destruction on purpose - or at least targeted to have to be rewritten to lose a bunch of functionality.

If the developers of those addons don’t want to continue their work, I don’t care. I just don’t care! I’m glad they made some addons I enjoyed, but I cannot allow this consideration to cloud my judgement when it comes to good game design.

Besides, all WoW addons are free software by definition. You have the right to download them and use them, you have the right to change them, you have the right to redistribute them, and you have the right to redistribute the changes (ideally with their names on it as co-authors at the very least); which means that if they don’t want to fix ElvUI, you can.

So get to work.

Yeah they can be reskinned. Nobody has yet though afaik. I’d love to give it a crack though of course for the first time in literally 16 years I am not given access :stuck_out_tongue:

Oh well, I’m sure someone will eventualy.

Out of curiosity, what’s wrong with them? I mean, other than that animated rested symbol, that thing is way too distracting (but also easily removed) but other than that?

I just despise the look of it. So there are no plans on being able to reskin them without an add-on?
