Emerald Dream optimisation, high GPU temps

RTX 3080, i5 12600k, 32GB RAM

60 degrees is nothing to worry about for a GPU, but it’s still a lot higher than I’d normally expect on WoW, especially a more CPU heavy game.

Something is up with this zone causing GPU usage to be a lot higher than the rest of the game.

Yep getting same issue. Not really sure what causes it as it seems to happen at random in the zone. And it is only in this zone.
I hit 85c yesterday while watching one of the cutscenes.
For reference my card is normally 60-65c.

Maybe it’s the grass physics going crazy who knows.

I have to admit, the Emerald Dream turns my GPU fans into airplane turboprops. Which is weird because its the only zone that does.

Its almost as if the Emerald Dream zone ignores my fps limitations that I set in the graphics options.

Honestly 60c is nothing. My 7900 XTX sits around 58c on core, 76-80c on hotspot in WoW, but at 460w power draw. Temps will vary a lot as well in wow depending on your graphic settings as well as display resolution. GPU utilization = higher temps generally.

@Trovlak could be that the emerald dream is more graphically demanding than the other zones. I doubt that it’s ignoring your fps limits, for me it’s working fine. I’m at 4k max settings and my GPU is always pushed to the max in wow, except in Valdrakken where its more of a cpu bottleneck.

Same here, hitting like 75-82 temp in Emerald Dream. Any suggestions or help?

Same issue here. CPU/GPU were both normally in around 60. Played for 1 hour today and I averaged around 60 on cpu and 70 on gpu. Playing at 1440p and fps limited 120. Don’t recall changing any settings.

Same here. Got a 3090. I can sit in Onahran plains with all settings on ultra (Environment Details 7) and my GPU won’t go over 50-60% @144fps 1080p. In the Emerald dream, even if I lower overall settings down from 10 to 9 my GPU is still at 97-99%. What is going in this zone?!

High gpu utilization is not a bad thing, yes temps will be higher, but temps below 90c are fine (preferably lower than 80c on core) so no need to worry. Just means you’re actually making use of your GPU.
In other words, what’s the use of a 3090 if it never gets fully utilized? Why go for a 3090 if you’re only using it as if it was a 3070?

Well its not supposed to be at 100% in WoW (its annoying cause of fan speeds and heat in my room). I got the 3090 for AI stuff and maybe a few games that actually have good graphics and need the power. Not even Bf2042 with 128 players and high graphics (1 below ultra) requires that much GPU power.

The point is that there is something weird going on in this zone. I did read in another thread on reddit that its caused by Liquid Detail and Compute Effects mainly.

Guys i was testing with the grfx settings to optimize performance with my new 4090 cause i could’nt hit my 144Hz target stable.
What i found out is actually not new since i had the same experience in Shadowlands already;
The compute setting quality severly increases the GPU-Load at certain locations with FOG/particles.
This maxed my 4090 on ultra, but with good it returns to more or less the usual load.
High is a compromise if you don’t want the pixelated artifacts around trees when looking at the fog, e.g. at the entrance portal to the new zone.

Some other things worth mentioning:

-RT shadows are VERY heavy on the CPU, turn them off at the superbloom event or when many players are around

-the renderscale seems bugged, if i go above, and even below 100%, my FPS drop although i’m at like 60-70% load, this should be purely on the GPU

-DX12 is way slower than DX11 for me… what the hell

-G-sync does not work in DX11 and it stutters if i playback a video on my 2nd screen, so i’m basically forced to use DX12 with worse performance

-i have 10-15 FPS less with DX12 in Valdrakken than DX11… with my 2070S it was the other way around, like it should be since DX12 has less CPU-overhead (that’s the whole purpose of it)

-draw distance and environmental detail are also hitting the CPU hard, that’s why i have them at 8 with a 5800X3D and a 4090… still can’t play at 10 unless i’m happy with 60 or less in Valdrakken and 100 while flying around…

-simply turning off nameplate visibillity during superbloom etc. increases FPS by 10+, that’s obvious but i wanted to mention it in case someone doesn’t know

-lowering water quality down to high also gives around 10 FPS

Some settings are naturally situational, like if there is no water or fog, lowering those settings won’t increase FPS, but will dramatically if there is.

Worth trying some of these setting changes:
https://www.reddit.com/r/wow/comments/17szmdd/these_changes_doubled_my_fps_in_emerald_dream/

That’s basically what i said :joy:

It might be worth a try to disable floating text if you have combat stutters. This removed stutters when landing using heroic leap, and other spells.

/console floatingCombatTextCombatDamage 0
/console floatingCombatTextCombatLogPeriodicSpells 0

I mean, as I said for me at 4k, it’s Always at 100% except in Valdrakken, so it being at 100% is not an issue at all.

Uh…

Why hammer a GPU, wasting power, and shortening its lifespan, when its not necessary to do so? I mean, the graphics in WoW in other zones are perfectly fine, without pegging my GPU at 100%.

I never did understand that mindset, “I have it, therefore it must be at 100% utilization 100% of the time”.

Then you could simply set an fps cap, or you know, lower the power limit on the gpu if you don’t wish to hit 100%? You have so many options.
Heck you could also turn down the settings in game?

Obviously you didn’t read the whole thread.

I did already. It doesn’t work.

Then explain why my gpu usage etc is going down if I lower my settings? You’re making no sense.
Let me remind you, I’m playing at 4k, yet the utilization goes down when I lower my graphics settings ingame.

Yeah GPU power draw/temps in Emerald Dream is nuts. It’s stopped me from playing 10.2 for now.
