End of Season 1 for Me

Hi everyone!

I wanted to share my experience during this season as a casual player and explain why it’s come to an end for me.

Background

I’ve been playing this game since 2006, but I only jumped on the m+ train as a healer during Season 1 of Shadowlands. Since then, I’ve managed to achieve all KSMs during Shadowlands and all KSHs during Dragonflight. It’s worth mentioning that I’m a pug healer, meaning I’ve never had a dedicated group to consistently play with. My usual goal each season is to reach KSH, but that’s no longer the case this season.

Season Overview

This season was expected to be the longest, as it’s the first of the expansion. Typically, I wrap up Season 1 within about 2-3 months after launch (as I did in both Shadowlands and Dragonflight). However, this season 1 ended after only 6 weeks. The main reason behind this is gear progression that led to a chain of problems. Let me tell you my experience so far:

Week 0: The Start of the Season
The first thing I want to point out is M0 during the first week of the season. I didn’t understand the point of doing M0 when delves simply provided better gear. The only reason to do M0 was if you were targeting specific trinkets. Allowing players to obtain good gear (or power) from delves was a great idea. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed doing delves despite the poor scaling, but I also wanted to learn the dungeons. I tried pulling one of my friends into an M0 to at least learn the damage patterns, but he refused, stating: “Why should we? Let’s do delves for better, they give better items. We’ll do them when m+ releases.” I did however noticed after m+ launched that most players didn’t know what they were supposed to do—much more so than in previous releases. I can also say the same about myself; I was caught off guard multiple times when my heals weren’t properly set.

Week 1: Struggling to Progress
When Season 1 started, I already had an item level of 608. My thought was: “What the hell? Can I directly go for 9s or even 10s?” Of course not; I was barely able to do some 6s.

Most dungeon difficulties seemed similar to Ruby Life Pools or Sanguine Depths at launch until I got into City of Threads (Boy ohh Boy… was not expecting that  ). After breaking some keys during the first day, I was left thinking: “These dungeons are extremely hard. I need to get more powerful, but how?” I was already fully equipped with champion delve gear (603-606). M+ 6s drop 606, so the only option was to gear up from 7s. I decided the easiest thing to do was to farm a couple of 7s and push my gear from there—maybe Tirna Scythe since it’s easier.

Everyone who posted a 7 key was scrutinizing players meticulously. If you didn’t finish Tirna 7 with at least 7+++ or 8++ and had at least 615 item level, you were automatically rejected.
It seemed like players were overprotective of their keys and only invited those who had already outgrown that key level and were farming specific items.
In my case, Tirna was targeted by many players, almost all looking for Unbound Changeling. Long story short: It was impossible to join a group for 7s unless you were already overgeared for the specific content.
I even had to create a group for Tirna 7. The desperation took me by surprise; many applicants were pleading to join or even insulting me, saying things like, “Why are you taking that tank, idiot!? You already have two paladins.” or “Take me or you will regret. Main is 2,6k rio” etc.
I decided to do some 4s-6s Mythic+ runs to cap crests and earn some Rio, making it easier to join groups the following week. I ended the week with all hero rewards in the vault available, capped crests, and a little over 2k rating. (had a friend who invited me in a couple of 7s, or else i coulden’t have reached this rio).

Week 2: Disappointment in Rewards
Big disappointment in the vault… again. There were no tier sets, only hero gear on slots already equipped with hero gear from Delver’s Bounty rewards. My new item level after doing everything post-reset was 612. I was already behind, which is a first since playing m+.

Most players already had 4 tier sets, while I only had the 2k rio token, which I hadn’t yet exchanged.
It was getting harder and harder to join some groups, and the possibilities to gear up were very limited.
Most of my slots were 610, so getting gear from m+ was not an option.
Capping crests was easily achievable (90 crests per week / 12 per run).
This week, I was least motivated to play, so I only maxed out the rewards in the vault and waited for the week to end.

Week 3: Hitting a Dead End
Finally, a tier piece dropped. I obtained:

2 catalyst charges
1 token
1 tier piece from the vault
My new item level was 615, and my Rio was around 2150. I thought, “Yeees, now we can push.” Spoiler Alert: it did not work out as planned

I decided to push Grim Batol or Stonevault since I hadn’t touched them since the first day of the season. I started applying to groups repeatedly. After about two hours, I received an invite into Stonevault 8, which ended in disaster. The next day i kept looking for a group for Grim Batol but after three hours of applying to all groups (6-8), I closed the game. This never happened in my life. Usual average wait time for me to join a group was a couple of minutes.

The next day, I tried again with the same result.
I decided to look for a 9, but received no invitations.
I successfully completed a smooth Tirna 8++ , considering it easily accessible, yet I didn’t receive any invites for 9s.
Even tried whispering group leaders, but most ignored me or said they were looking for better players (620+ item level, 2400 Rio, etc.).
They were actually seeking players who regularly do 11s and 12s, likely farming big crests or specific items.
I applied for a 7 and was instantly accepted because I had timed it at 8++ with a 615 item level as a healer, which was good. Other applicants below 615 were instantly refused by the leader. However, since I already had the gear I needed for 7 or 8, there was no point in doing them as nothing would be a direct upgrade. I needed 9s to start upgrading, but 9s felt too far away from 8s.

At this moment, I have a few options:

  1. Get Friends – Not an option for me. I just want to plug and play, not to make friends…
  2. Wait Until Blizzard Removes the Crest Cap – Maybe after reaching 619, I could apply for 9s and maybe get accepted.
  3. Wait Several Weeks to Upgrade Gear – Continue farming +90 crests each week until I have sufficient gear and stop getting rejected.
  4. Push My Own Key – I don’t want to push my own key because it feels bad to break a key and then have to push a lower key I don’t need. Plus, getting a high key for an unwanted or too hard dungeon can be infuriating.
  5. Apply Relentlessly to All Tirna 9s – Hope to get invited and farm until I improve my item level. (already tested, not worth my time)
  6. Quit

Final Thoughts
At this point, I no longer feel excitement for pushing because there are too many barriers to entry and progression issues involved. Out of the eight seasons I’ve played, this is the first where I felt progression was on par with mobile game standards. (that’s the reason I’ve decided to post here)

I personally think if the bigger crests were rewarded at key levels 7s or even 8s (with hero gear at 6s), it would have smoothed out progression and made me more inclined to play.
Compared to previous seasons, the big crest rewards are much harder to obtain than ever before.
Combined with the overprotective attitude of most towards their keys (rightfully justified to some degree) of the player base and the high difficulty of dungeons, this results in high toxicity and gatekeeping at certain key levels (7s, 9s, 11s, etc.).

I’ve enjoyed this expansion so far, and I’d be perfectly fine ending the season here, don’t get me wrong. However, at this point, it’s simply not worth the effort or time for me to keep pushing.

I would love to hear your opinions on this!

Thank you for reading!

Fully agree with what you said, used to love m+, got ksm too ever since SL, KSH all DF, but now its just a chore.

I couldn’t agree more, sadly it’s too late for s1 to change, as if they fixed the challenge now, people who did it when it was harder would be rightfully upset.

Hopefully enough people are still subbed for Blizzard to try and fix it in s2.

I hope you don’t mind, but I’ve shared a link to your story in other m+ threads, to try and help people see that it’s not “whining for free loot” and that there is a problem.

Thank you! As you mentioned, this isn’t about handing out free loot. It’s about the pace of character progression throughout the season. Early on, I felt like I was being showered with end-game gear just by doing delves, but once I moved on from them, the power progression slowed down significantly, to the point where it now feels almost halted.

EDIT: From my perspective, there are literally three main progression stages: Delves (Champion) → 7s (Hero) → 9s (Crests). The fourth stage would be 10s for Mythic gear, but at that point, there’s no reason for me to continue pushing since finishing 10s is the end game goal.

the problem, and probably the biggest problem with this is that it is not about making friends, at least not in a halfway acceptable social way. You need other people that are in or above your skill bracket, which is tedious.
Especially for existing players that so far could just enjoy the farm content with their existing friends, and now all of a sudden you are expected to screw them so you can get anywhere in this ridiculous gearing process?
It´s alright for achievement only keys to require more than most players are capable of, but the gearing process should never require a tedious amount of skill, gear should be there to enable the player to do harder content, not to keep them away from it.

And yea, tried to pug to at least 2k, but even with an 8 already healed you do not find a group inviting you to a 7 as a non-meta healer. Because noone wants to drop below a 7 and so they need 630ilvl 3,47k rio guys to all but guarantee the key is a success. It´s really the dumbest most short sighted change they did probably ever.

Now i´m mostly just raiding with my guys because screw me, i still enjoy the social aspect of the game, but if there´s no swift changes i donßt see myself playing past oktober.

Thank you for the reply. Personally, I’ve never been interested in forming relationships with other players, even small ones, for a few reasons: independence, flexibility, and a drama-free environment.

I know it might sound a bit unusual in an MMO, but this approach has worked for me over the last four years, and I’ve had a great time. If it stops working at some point, that’s fine—I’ll just switch to a different activity and move on.

Do some PvP maybe? Unleash your fury and dispense indiscriminate justice upon enemy foes whilst gaining prestige amongst the PvP community.

I relate to this so much, I hit my 2k and just felt the wind going out of my sails.
I’ll hit 619 on 16/10 reset and then I’d have to do 9+ to gain any progress with crests and it just feels so out of reach.
I don’t mind difficulty but it feels like everything has to go perfect this season to even time 8+, trying to push to +10, for final gear, with puggs just won’t happen in a way that will be in any way fun.

My most enjoyable season was s3 of dragonflight. And I know it has a reputation for being an easy season which it probably was, but at least it was fun to log in and do 18+ keys and have the exception on joining a random group that you’d finish it. You could cap your crests and expect a nice vault reward next week.

This season you have to do the hardest content, to gain gear to do the hardest content. Very little in the way of gaining power over time to make it possible to run the hardest content.

I think we have very different ideas on what a casual player is.

But other than that… Enjoy your break, I suppose.
I hope for you that M+ will get fixed in s2 since there’s a lot of rumblings that it’s bad.
From my own egotistical perspective I just hope it won’t be fixed at the expense of delves; I’d hate that.

Sadly the view of casual varies wildly.

I’ve been called a casual for complaining that it’s hard to run +9 keys, meanwhile my neighbour who is a keen wow player, thinks I’m hardcore for daring to step into keys at all this season.

Casual seems to be a word used for people to escape from challenges to their own illusions of to how the game looks.

My experience has been a lot better than yours for M+. I am not sure what class you’re playing but I think you might be a healer? I am not sure how you have found it so hard to get into groups as these roles are always needed.

I play 3 warriors (fury, arms, prot) and my main is fury. Fury warriors have been screwed over every week so far by blizzard with the constant nerfs because of the crappy raid yet I have some how managed to get up to a point where I have timed all 9’s and I am trying to do 10’s but its difficult to find decent groups for these. I can get into a 9’s but its no way an instant invite its takes 10-15 minutes and I often end up doing a dungeon I have already got a 9++ in as people don’t like accepting you if you only have a 9+.

I am not sure why this all started but its really annoying. I had a GB as untimed +8 for a while at the start of the season and could I get into 8’s to try again? nope took hours of applying to GB +8 groups to finally get accepted. Its stupid because it means I got punished for sticking with a group that wasn’t going to time the key so I can sort of understand now why people instantly leave when its not a timed run. What I have learned how is to never let raider io update with an none timed key always keep spamming that dungeon until its timed otherwise you will regret it even more later due to the toxic player base.

I used to tank at every season since legion but with the tank nerfs making them need the healer more I decided to quit tanking as the thing I liked most about tanking was being able to look after myself but even so I decided to jump on my prot warrior which I had 587 gear on and start applying for +3 and +4 and I was accepted pretty much accepted right away. I would have thought that healers are somewhat similar situation so what I think might be the problem for you is the fact that everyone is a meta slave and they think they need to have rsham to do ANY key.

I hate tier lists so much as its all BS. I remember playing S1 DF on my prot warrior and getting invites right away with much lower item levels than other tanks applying and then come mid season 1 when prot warriors got nerfed it took a while to get into a +8 or whatever was needed for the weekly and instead it was just prot paladins getting invited over me and I assume the same was happening where meta slaves think only a certain class can do M+ and that others will just fail.

The main problem with TWW s1 is this crest runs can only be done a +9 and above which means that the competition for people applying to do a +9 is crazy. I don’t even know how I get into half of the groups I get into because I some times look and there is like over 100 applicants for a +9. Before it was spread out over multiple key levels so it wasn’t so bad but now it just makes it very difficult to get into keys which is what I think blizzard intended. I think they don’t like M+ and would much rather everyone just do their crappy raid so they are trying to push as many people as possible into that by making M+ as horrible as possible.

This is so silly.

You complain about 9 feeling out of reach yet you refuse to take the only guaranteed approach to actually getting into 9s without score or gear.

Feels bad to break a key? Well if every keyholder had your mindset pug environment would be a desert.

You say it feel bad to break the key cause then you have a key you dont need while at the same time being stuck in +8, if some of those +8 you timed were yours you would have done plenty of 9 by now, maybe some 10 as well.

Some dungeon may suck to get, yes that is why when you go into someone else 8 and reroll if it is really a bad dungeon and then you push your keys again.

Doing your own keys cuts to 0 the time that you need to be accepted, which can add up to quite a lot when doing high keys.

Guess thats what happens when Blizzard cuts off the welfare gear feed. They wake up and find out that you can actually die by standing in fire.

I really don’t intend to sound mean, but it may come across as such: it really just sounds like a skill and perception issue. In DF and SL you could get 2k rating (ksm) at keystone 15. Less than 30% of players ever achieved ksh (2.5k rating) at keystone ~20. This was at the -end- of the season.
If you would translate that to current keystones, doing all 6s and some 7s or something should get you ksm, whereas doing all 9s and some 10s should get you ksh. This is not meant to be easy, especially 3 weeks into the season. I think you have an unrealistic expectation of what you should be capable of doing without having invested time early on into getting good gear. If you’ve missed the preseason, you are pretty much 1 week behind for every preseason week you did not increase in power. You can attempt to catch up, but the crest cap will work against you severely unless you’re lucky with drops.

You are not casual lol.

Pretty much sums it all up really. You want to piggy back off the hard work of others and are disappointed when they don’t want to play with you.

Just because something has been one way in the past, if you don’t adapt, you finally get pushed aside i.e. what happened since SL means nothing now. Adapt or quit, you chose to quit.

I think the perception of casual is relative to the context. So, M+ players are at worst semi-casual, as opposed to fully casual players who do not engage in rated content at all.
However, within the context of M+, casual players are players who play for fun and do not want/have time/possibility/interest/skill/some other reason to push higher keys and simply play for slightly more challenging content. Within M+, casual is merely a spectrum one is one relative to how far they are from the meta/highest keys.

Indeed. No one that had 608 at start of season can be described as casual.

Yeah. That’s why I tend to avoid using the term.
