I’m having a great time with the new patch and expansion but just wanted to have a rant/discussion about one of my biggest criticisms of the game at the moment.
You see, all I want to do is push mythic plus keys but every patch wipes my gold reserves trying to craft gear and buy consumables to keep up with the curve. I started this patch with 60k but I’ve already run out trying to craft two pieces of gear with embellishments that have replaced the Elemental Lariat since it’s been nerfed (the Lariat also bankrupted me last season). I wish you just got gear from doing the content you like to do and that was the end of it.
I’ve always found professions extremely dull so that’s not an option for me and the new system has just made it worse imo.
What are everyone else’s thoughts about the new gearing/crafting systems introduced in Dragonflight?
yeah crafting costs a bit much to people who don’t farm gold or do boosts. recrafting can be a b sometimes
Usually games offer you alternatives to professions for making money (eg. farming exclusive items/materials from high end content) but the WoW community aggressively refuses the concept that better players should be rewarded with more gold by the game.
I also don’t like profs and farming mats so I made most of my gold by collecting augment runes from CTA bonuses while some of my guildies sell boost runs.
i like the idea of having great items coming from proffesions but it’s so hard to do it yourself that you just buy it and it costs gold, if you decide to learn that prof. it costs you way more than buying it. i am trying to craft my gear with my new main but i don’t have enough knowledge so i’ll just buy it. making crafting related things account-bound could help with this tbh.
60k is a lot to you guys?
like 8-10 weeks ago when i was gearing my hunter i paid boosters like 2 Million gold for the full 2400 score.
Just WoW token it.

Pay to win - what a hideous idea…

By simply working one day you have enough money to buy several tokens.
Plenty of work days in a full month

I’ve been told in the past to not “derail” someone elses thread, so let’s not do that.
Keep it on the topic.

Probably gone even more in our favour with inflation now as the monthly sub prices tend not to change as quick. When the yearly sub offer came up, I came to realize that even this is only a fraction of a day’s work to afford.
I actually feel I made a good chunk of gold from professions in DF but that has a lot to do with me not caring about the endgame as much as I used to. Not sure how much more different it would be compared to past expansions. My bigger beef with professions is how the effort to make them more interesting is making them dangerously fiddly for many players to engage with. Not to mention the bag space situation with these different quality tiers.
I crafted 2 items earlier, -70k gold, mats + crafter’s fees + enchants add up really fast.
It’s not as bad as SL legos but still pretty bad.
You can easily play wow without buying a token, i know people who earn millions of gold playing the AH.

was sitting on 300k gold since cata.
in df i am down to 10k and for the first time ever I bought a token to sell for gold.
crafting ruined me as a multi classer.
also awesome that a +17 m+ run give like 80g while the repair bill is even higher than that if you didn’t even wipe.
their business model works i guess. force players that want to play the game for challenge to buy tokens.
You cannot do all… m+ is taking a bunch of time and even stupid enchants are like 10k for weapons already beside all the flasks and food you need it is no surprise you go broke very quickly if all you do is m+ or raid.
I actually farmed quite a bit of ore just to get almost no gold at all for selling it lol.
So the only way to get gold is actually to boost noobs?

There is literally zero gold coming in from anything other than farming materials or doing boosts. The 500 gs are cute from dragon riding purse but its only 6-7 per every 3 days or so and can’t cover the cost of pots/flasks etc alone. Let’s not talk about other expenses like enchants gems crafting etc. Some worldquests give gold .For this 3.5 days I have total of 3k gold which is nothing. But there are times when literally zero wqs reward gold for entire 3.5 days.
Crazy thing is that they lowered the 3-4k gold from paragon box to 1k (also takes longer to get a paragon box now due to wqs spawning 3 days not every day and there is no 1.5k per day from calling) and got rid of callings gold as well. There is no free gold from mission table either.
Consumables and everything else costs about the same like previous expansions but the token is still above 300k. On one hand it is a supply demand situation but less gold comes into the game that should lower its price but on the other hand people clearly need gold for a lot of things. I remember when korthia was added the token was like 160k in EU and that was one of the lowest point of Shadowlands (In an expansion where gold influx was much higher). Also gold was useless in Shadowlands because other than legendary base crafting there was no gold sink. So I don’t know what is going on.
probably not many “casual” players left that are willing to buy tokens.
I bet the hardcore players do not buy lots of tokens because they do boosting or get gold by other means and that is why the token price is still high

You do and that is the end of it, if you want it to be. The fact that you don’t consider that gear ‘good enough’ is on you. You don’t need BiS.
I enjoy the new crafting system, mainly because I’m making alot of gold.
I do think the scarcity of some of the recipes and items needed to craft them is a bit over the top. For example, I don’t like that the BiS Enchant is a rare drop from the raid, I don’t like that it (and many other BiS recipes) require Shadowflame essences, which are rare drops from the raid.
This pushes up the prices too much. I like making gold, but I like to be able to do it at a reasonable price.
I also think that Blizzard should put more ways into the game for players to make gold outside of professions. As you highlighted, it’s not everybodies cup of tea, but everybody wants to have the best gear for the content they do. The game shouldn’t be designed around selling WoW tokens, there should always be an alternative method to obtaining gold. This is especially true, if they want to continue making scarcely obtaining Recipes and Materials which will demand a stupidly high price.

If you’re trying to push higher keys you do sort of need bis gear though. Especically if everyoen else has it you’re automatically at a disadvantage and it’s harder to keep up in terms of DPS numbers.
Sometimes this game feels like your competitive success isn’t determinied on your personal skill at the game but rather who has the best gear/ most gold to afford it. We can see Blizzard make steps to improve this by stopping BoE items dropping in raid during the race to world first but in my opinion they need to go further.
I’m curious to hear your thoughts though on why players shouldn’t want BiS items.
Alchemy and herbalism have really helped me with gold reserves. An hour of herb farming netted me up to 12k gold at the start of the expansion, about 3-4k now. If you add another hour of WQ you can make around 5-6k daily.
Be careful not to sell mats at low prices. Writherbar for example can go between 30-80 gold a piece depending on…dunno what but I sell it whenever it’s above 50gold.
Phial experimentation is the way to go though. Omnium Draconis can go below 50 gold (I buy it when it’s below 80) and it has been a very steady gold machine throughout the expansion. Note, sell at raid time, around 7-8 pm.
I’m currently holding about 50k worth of phials waiting for the AH to spend the accumulated phials from season 1. The prices have been increasing since start of season 2.
Dunno about the other professions, but this has brought me from 30k at the start of the expansion to 400k without having to do much, plus all the herb farming helped me max my herbalism and alchemy (from chests found along) .
Anyway, don’t tell anyone I told you this
