[era] [Paladin] Tanking dungeons while leveling and at 60

Hello,

Can you point me to any updated guide? All I have found are guides for raids and, in short, they say to spam Blessing of Kings.

I am mid-30s and now that every dd have an AoE skill, I am struggling in trash packs of 5-6 mobs. Consecration does not hold the threat, Divine Intervention has 1 h CD and 5min CD of Blesing of Protection is too long.

I am blessing people with Salvation and it seems to help a bit. Also, I try to use “eagle” items (int+stam) and always have a blue weapon of my level. Beyond that and asking people to have patience because I need to drink each 2 packs, I have no idea what else I can do.

In vanilla, I played only horde. So, I have zero experience with pre-TBC Paladin.

Cheers,

PS: I am posting this in the Classic forum because the Paladin class forum seems to be only for retail.

Blessing of Salvation works, because in raid you have like 45 warriors and you can bless them all in one press (with greater salvation). That generates good threat. For dungeons it just will not work this way. You don’t have access to greater salvations before 60 level and your group is likely to contain up to 4 warriors which is not enough for threat.

Basically protection paladin is not a good tank in vanilla. It never was because of lack of taunt and it’s even less a good tank now, when groups are full of warriors who never heard of concept of threat management.

Best thing you can do is to spec to holy and enjoy healing paper warriors.

Second best thing you can do is to gather as much spell power as you can, get 4 mages and spam Consecration.

Third best thing you can do is to get some tank gear, focus on preventing mobs hitting your healer and let the fate decide the rest. If someone pulled aggro, he’ll tank it, no problems. Or he’ll die and mob will return to you.

Paladin tank can work to some extent (because some encounters are made for taunt and you can’t just compensate it with BoP) when whole group works for it. Every DPS watches his threat, switches target when threat is dangerous and so on.

All bullcrap. Paladin is the best 5 man instance tank. Put salvation on all party members and only use seal of wisdom. The wisdom procs generates a lot of threat.

At lower levels go “of the whale” gear and you’ll never have to drink again. Use wisdom on yourself when you are the only paladin in the group.

Paladin tanking is smooth as hell in 5 mans… Warriors are horrible tanks whenever it’s some cleave damage or AoE is going on. Check out guides by pallytime, he has a lot of wisdom when it comes to paladins in classic.

Also as off tanking in raids, you will do fine, you’ll never lose the aggro. Ppl just have to let consecration start ticking before they attack.

Paladin is by far the smoothest tank in 5 mans.

Bear is better for 5 man and he doesn’t use mana, got inner and battle rez

A paladin can go on without drinking too. And is far better for cleave and aoe threat. Bear is better than warrior tho

Thank you all for sharing your expriences. For my own fun, I am leveling classes and specs that I never played in vanilla and Paladin tank is one of these. Questing for lore and doing dungeons are the two things I enjoy the most.

You really made me laugh. it describes well what I am meeting. Stacking spell power is one think I was thinking about, thought I only have found one decent item at this point of the road.

I have just learnt seal of wisdom and at least I drink less.I will try spirit instead of intellect as secondary stat. I wil google pallytime.

Regarding the most comfortable class to play in 5 man dungeons, I played warrior and tank back in vanilla and I remeber that for trash packs it was bear and for bosses warrior (if dd could wait for a sunder). Pala is being the most difficult to learn.

Cheers.-

All of my best dungeon experiences in Anniversary were with a pala tank. Sadly the result is completely out of your hands, short of using salv on party members and wisdom on self and target, there isn’t much you can do. Either the dps wait for 1-2 consecration ticks and they have best dungeon experience of their life, or they don’t and everybody is miserable. Nothing you can do other than remind them every few pulls.

dont get wrong impression out of those videos, blessing of kings spamming is something else. You need more people from same class in your group / raid for it to work.

Paladin is legit dungeon tank in classic, but you need to pay attention on some things.

1- salva your group, especially melee dps.
2- don’t use judgement on cooldown, only use judgement when 1 of the mobs lose aggro and moves to healer, if mobs moves to other DPS it is not important
3- use righteous fury on yourself always, if you miss that your threat generation is lower
4- Derank consecration, it spends too much mana when leveling rank 1 and rank 2 should be enough
5- Use seal of righteousness on CD, it should be always up
6- fast main hand weapon around 1.6 seconds speed, preferably sword.
7- dont use salva on yourself, use kings etc.
8- auto attack, change target auto attack, repeat tab auto, tab auto
9- use plater addon so you see which mob is losing threat, focus on it.

again most important thing do not even try spamming Blessing of Kings to get aggro, it is for raid tanking and number of class you spam it on the raid should be high in number. Let’s say you run 20 men ZG and have 12 warriors in your group, than spamming BoK on them will generate huge aggro. But it is something used to get back aggro, you should not be playing by spamming it 100% of the time.

Thanks all again. As I am further leveling, having learnt seal of wisdom and getting spirit on equipment, things are a lot more smooth now.

hehe, this remeind me when I begged dps to wait for a sunder on the bosses (preferible 2) when i played a warrior tank back in the day.

Great piece of wisdom this one. I did not know that it was to get threat back.

cheers.-

you should never start with sunder armor if you play warrior MT. You should start with bloodthirst > heroic strike = revenge. Sundering is other DPS 's job. Same for shouting, OT should shout, but things change in dungeon still you can sunder later.

Hey, Blondiê

I was just comparing experiences to what I remember about 5 man leveling (or 10 man Scolo / 15 man UBRS) witha warrior. Warriors were not very popular then, at least in my guild and server. While tanking, main fear was always a big crit from a rogue or a fire mague. Sunder was the best tool to maintain threat and avoid lossing aggro when the big crits happened. Of course, revenge went first if it proc and for sunder you need to build rage first, hence the need to “wait” for the dd.

Anyway, don´t ramble from the topic. Thanks all for accompany me while leveling. I have just ding’ed… Now, I think I will switch to holy or try an hybrid holy/tank while gearing it a bit

cheers.-
