Hello,
i want to inquire about a gamemechanic that seems to be frequently used and looks like an exploit to me, has however not been sanctioned by Blizzard (afaik).
I’m talking about people (ab)using ledges to force an enemy to choose a long path, then before reaching the player, said player jumps down the ledge, forcing the enemy (who is unable to get on/off said ledge) to path all the way back. this is repeated until the enemy is defeated, effectively cheesing the fight (and if done correctly without taking any damage).
How is Blizzard’s stand on this? I have seen this being done multiple times on stream and in youtube videos. For example in DM:East, it is possible to solo kill Zevrim Thornhoof by abusing pathing and ledges.
Can doing this lead to a ban? Does anyone have any official statements from blizzard on this exploit?

I think I have read that the Dire Maul ledge kite technique is an exploit. But can’t remember where; I will look it up.
That being said blizz have had plenty of time while building Classic to fix it so if its still there (is it?) it’s a bit unreasonable to think players will not use it.

Clever use of game mechanics.

Lol, copying what you’ve seen on youtube does not count you as “clever”

I think it’s not too different to playing with line of sight or more obvious obstacles, even if in theory the mob should be able to go in a straight line. Think of when you jump off a platform and mobs have to run all around, or the infamous “wheel reset” in Deadmines.
I seriously doubt the warlock that soloed Hydross in TBC (a 25-man raid boss) kiting for several hours was banned.
Damn never seen this many room tempeture IQ players in one thread

At work I use kelvin so I’ll take that as a compliment.

This is not an exploit. I remember rogue killing Patchwerk back in WotLK using similar technique. He was not banned.

Can we stay on topic please?
I really want to know if doing this is okay and can’t get me banned.
That is just how classic works, nothing exploitive about it.
While he might not be clever, it is still using game mechanics in a clever way to give you an advantage, like it or not.

It’s called pathfinding exploit, but since it’s part of the vanilla experience it’s allowed.
On retail it was fixed many years ago.
Maybe it’s quoted in Kelvin

Path-kiting has been a thing ever since…
Do you really think that’s an appropriate way to talk to a fellow human, just because he wounded you? You would feel better bigging other’s up instead of down. Try it sometime, the next time you get hurt. You’ll both be less depressed, and you’ll be a badass to be admired😎
go back to retail if u want challenging pve
edit: ,kid.
Its only an exploit if you kill a mob without it having a path to reach you, untill then its a clever use of game mechanics.
Mobs can’t jump, this is hardly something you need a youtuber to tell you - you will notice this after a few seconds of playing the game.
Same way you will notice that if there is a path to were you jumped the mob will take this path, and if there is not it will “evade” and eventually reset.
But to answer the OP; no it’s not a exploit, no more than interrupting caster mobs is
MY old Guild had like 10 hunters farming DM with the ledge methode all the time, and not one of them even got as much as a warning…
Nop, if the mob can’t find a path to reach you, it will switch to the Evade state.
