Finished Embers of Neltharion Campaign today... oh boy!

Done the last chapter only today. I wanted to do it the way you’re “supposed to”, kill Sarkareth first and then complete it. I only do the LFR, so I waited till today and finally got it complete. And as the title says… oh boy! I didn’t expect a lot, WoW’s story doesn’t tend to be good in recent years, but man was that cringe.

First the Black Dragonflight, the evil one that was supposed to be evil from the beguining, is suddenly all good. Wrathion who commited literal genocides and done terrible stuff, who was a spoiled brat for decades is all of a sudden a good guy who can do no wrong.

Sabellian got it even worse, a dragon who is a son of Deathwing (and brother to Nefarian and Onyxia), and who followed Deathwing loyaly for millenia (and some how didn’t know about Aberrus) is all of a sudden disgusted about what he saw in Aberrus and sees how bad Deathwing’s legacy was (despite both him and his siblings doing much worse things than we saw in Aberrus, but he was fine with that I guess).

And than all of a sudden, neither wants to be the aspect (despite the whole theme of the expansion being Wrathion vs Sabellian) and everyone agrees that it should be Ebonhorn, who spent the entire expansion (and a previous few all the way back to Highmountain story in Legion) doing nothing. So I guess that makes him best for the position… yep WoW is back to the Shadowlands tier writing.

Truth be told the only big difference between Shadowlands and Dragonflight in writing and storyline is that in Shadowlands they gave the current writing team the open hands to do whatever they want and run wild. So as a result we’ve got: Elune genociding the Night Elves to feed Ardenweald with souls not knowing they’re going to the Maw, Dreadlords working for the Jailor all along as the triple undercover agents, Night warrior horse, Jaina massacring legions of Jailor’s forces, Anduin and Sylvanas having a change of heart a dozen times while being mind controlled by every power possible, Pelagos the Arbiter and everyone being a robot in the end.

With Dragonflight Blizzard realized this problem, so they solved it by pretty much removing the story. They said to the writing team: “Look, just give us a reason to be on the Isles, do dungeons, raids and stuff there, and keep it as brief as possible.” And initially it worked, for Raszageth at least. Raszageth really turned out to be first good villain in a while. But after she was dead we were left with nothing and an SL like story in a reduced capacity.

We have this incarnates, who we’ve seen in 2 cinematics (6 mins combined + with Fyrakk occasionally shouting “You dare steal from my crucible little worms” a few times a day) and know pretty much nothing about, but who were supposed to be this big bad evil. We had Sarkareth plot who became this mega evil for some reason after encountering us a few times (literally a few times, once in Forbidden Reach and two times in Zaralek). And the Aspects, who as some other post said have had the character range of the teletubbies for this entire expansion.

And to make it worse, I actually liked SL story better, because there was lots of it. I couldn’t wait each week to log in and see what other nonsense thing are we gonna find out now… in DL I just don’t care cause I “know” we’re getting nothing.

Tl;dr just my rant on DF storyline.

WoW writers love these boring peacemongers, like Thrall, Baine or Anduin.
And now this guy.

It’s so very lame, indeed.

I think the story mostly makes sense. But I say mostly, because there’s a lot of… cuddling?

Like, how do I get to tell Alexstrazsa how to lead her flight?! Mwahaha, she should be treating me like an insignificant gnat. x’D

Think you read the situation wrong.

Nothing to do with them not wanting the aspect role, its to do with the war showed how not ready they both are.

Wraithon almost killed himself several times over, sebellion almost got himself killed several times over, because of rash decisions and allowing their emotions to overtake their position / duty.

While ebonhorns only injuries were down to saving them both from said dumb decisions.

Ebonhorn actually did plenty in lore, it just was depicted ingame, his job was to protect the highmountain tauren.

But no, ebonhorns actions were to duty, while both brothers acted out of hate / vengence and caused several collisons which were lost due to lashing out emotionally

By display alone, it was obvious ebonhorn simply was more suited for a role, and both learned theyd get their flight killed if they were to lead.

Its called growth, and self reflection in character. Lol

Whole theme of the expansion? Huh? It was litterally 1 segment which lead to a rep grind in the back of 1 zone.

the only redeeming quality of Ebonhorn being the aspect, is him not using a Elf or Human visage.

exactly its only bad if yiou ignore the actually ignore the lore

I was hoping sabellan would die during the cave campaign. They could’ve used it to get wrathion to man up (and grow a brain like he had in MoP).

Sry, am I allowed to say “man up” or is it “they up” now?

WoWs lore has always been pretty bad :joy: cheesey and fun was about the best it got.

Something cant be 'cringe"

It can be cringey or cringeworthy, but not cringe.

Awful that the word being used that way has penetranted the modern vernacular.

Its a verb, not an adjective

Yes i was dissapointed in how that black dragonflight story developed also it just makes our time picking wration or sabellian to be the leader pointless they should have made that choice interactive with data and gave what the player base wanted. player Interactive lore choices would have been new and cool.

If you say so

???
Isn’t he considered a good guy since MoP?

Sabellian and his flight are those blacks who got rid of corruption, so yeah technically they are not-evil-ones.
He was a forgotten npcs before, where did you find info about him spitting out warcrimes 24/7?

Lmao, i won’t even comment this, criticizm on the level of “why anakin fell to the dark side? is he stupid?”

I think they showed why he’s a good leader, what’s the problem? he also directly aided us in legion what the hell dude.

It’s like op just cherrypicked plotpoints out of context and twisted them to look as bad as possible

Depends on the context, character that got through legion or shadowlands won’t be insignificant in her eyes at all, especially considering how dangerous champions can be

Is being factually incorrect is a modern trend or something?

And we’re technically still the same character since essentially vanilla (even if it makes little sense) so we’ve worked with and earned Red Dragons Queen’s respect many times over. Be it by standing next to her during Nexus War, aiding them against Deadwing and saving Azeroth at least 3 times afterwards.

WoW’s lore was always pretty much prone to retcons and changes as it went. Hell as early as TBC stuff started changing rapidly and even devs admitted to dropping the ball with that expansion’s lore. Draenei got changed from species native to Dreanor to advanced extra terrestrial race that ended hiding there from Burning Legion, Illidan, Vashj and Kael firmly grabbed the villain ball. Many character’s depiction and mentality changes between books and games depending on writers. It’s not exactly easy to follow especially with things made about 10-15 years ago

Well yes, warhammer universe had this massive retcons too, is warhammer universe is bad because of that?
I think what people mean when they say “warcraft always had bad lore” is that story is not good, but story and lore are different substances

Black storyline might be unsatisfying but it is also logical, expected, and, frankly, in-universely consistent. I, too, would prefer a bad-end scenario with conflicts raising but that wasn’t what Blizzard was aiming at with this expansion, like, at all. And if you were genuinely expecting something like that to happen… yeah, wishful thinking.

The conclusion was always assumed to be something in style of forming new Blackwing Council instead of one single aspect, or a third new figure to appear that would help find the compromise, or anything thematically similar. Blizzard obviously wasn’t planning to kill neither the fan-favourite Wrathion or their freshly reborn Sabellian. And this whole expansion idea is about hope and renewal, right? So, there must be some kind of closure.

It’s not all doom and gloom, though. With aspect finally out of the picture, we can, for example, expect Wrathion to continue his personal Old Gods research that him being the aspect could otherwise circumvent (as he would be under intense supervision), and Sabellian to struggle with that shadowflame infection that, I am sure, he wasn’t completely cured from. Clumsy Ebonhorn election might yet become beneficial for the future worldbuilding and story.

Fair point although the holes and retcons in WoW happen without even batting an eye. Let’s take Ending of WotLK and (in)famous “There always must be a Lich King”. They handwaved it by trying to convince us that without mind behind helmet the scourge would swallow Azeroth but Lich King is really only less than I believe 20-30 years old entity? Ner’zhul became the first after events of Beyond the Dark Portal and when He was loosing power and mind the result was undead breaking from his control and regaining their minds/free will. Scourge wasn’t coming with increased zeal in Frozen Throne - it was dying out as Ner’zhul’s power waned.

(And let’s not try to digest their biggest most blatant retcon with Shadowlands done only so they could build up Zovals credentials and have way to absolve Sylvanas of guilt)

Oh he definitely wasn’t assuming you mean the corruption all Black Draogns sans Wrathian and Ebyssian shared. He indirectly admitted that he kept hearing voices till N’Zoth’s demise as he compared whispers he kept hearing in Caverns to that. Without powerful artifact or experiments ran on his eggs it’s very likely that he’s still corrupted, he and his Kin are just strong willed enough to not let it control them.

You know what this thread needs? This.

So 50/50 by default, since a ton of people got both to max for the Mount.
