Game is really bad looking now compared to newer high graphics games, will it get an overhaul?

Will WoW get a graphics overhaul? I have been playing some of the new, more graphically demanding games since i got my new high end PC, like wukong:black myth, and the new assassins creed shadows looks very nice too. But when I go back to WoW, i just cant bring myself to play it. It just looks really bad and feels outdated.

The game itself is good but i cant stand to play it, and the cost of 100-150 a year just does not seem justifiable.

The strength of wow is that it runs on basically any hardware.
And we don’t need realistic looking graphics either, this game is known for its style and cartoony look, doesn’t need changing.

The game already uses a lot of modern techniques and features in the latest expansions. Heck shadowlands was tauted for dynamic lightning

Game looks fine…

They did upscale the graphics of Classic, maybe they could do that on retail as well. It’s still WoW graphics but at least the old zones look a bit better.

I doubt Blizzard will do much about the graphics. Maybe small improvements here and there, but certainly no sweeping overhaul.

they will upgrade the graphics in the next few years when a high number of people stop playing the game because of the bad graphics.
i myself love to see wow in modern graphics but for now it is what it is

Will you buy me one of those? If yes then sure! Graphics overhaul…

Also, WoW is not “low graphics”. It has an artstyle of his own. Its not the only game to do so by the way. Many others have a “style”. Minecraft (insanely popular) is literally pixelated !

What are you smoking, OP? WoW looks absolutely fantastic for what it is: a game with a cartoonish style. Of course it’s not going to look like games with pseudo-realistic graphics, nor should it do so, for that would rob it of most of its charm.

Unfortunately my own PC is so bad it can’t run the new expansion well - but Classics it can still run pretty good.

Any updates to the graphics would likely eliminate a lot of players and should be taken into consideration.

Meh, I like the way WoW looks.
Character models in particular tend to look kinda unpleasant with the more ‘realistic’ styles you see.

Or reduce the graphics tax when a high number of people stop playing the game because they don’t want to pay so much to upgrade their hardware just for WoW.

Then quit?

Game looks fine but the engine could use some work however much that is possible considering its age. World bosses should not cause zone wide lag etc.

You justify the cost of a game based on its graphics? If the AAA industry has taught us anything the last 10 years, its that graphics aren’t everything.

Looks is fine, is the optimization that make it runs horrible with many issues.

WoW looks pretty great if you ask me, for a 20 year old game. Let’s see how good you look in 20 years .

They’ve added a lot of updated technologies and have revamped areas of the games, especially with mounts and models. I think what looks most outdated is the terrain and building. They can’t use what they have now for player housing, those assets would have to look much better, and i expect them to do that.

I think with every expansion they try to squeeze more out of what they do. The issue is that you’ve got wide open terrain with great distances, that puts a lot of demand real quick on resources. It’s not like with other games where you’re always in a fishbowl, even if the game gives the illusion and feel of being much bigger.

Then you have lots of other players on the screen, unlike a single player game, where its just you and X amount of bad guys.

I think they’ll continue to push thingz forward little by little, but lots of people play due to accessibility, most players aren’t on high end rigs.

Make sure you have all the settings in graphics enabled, like ray tracing and such. But no, WoW will probably not ever be on the high end of things, they’d lose a lot of subscribors and the game looks fine. I play a lot of other games as well, i dont think they’re that impressive looking in most cases.

These games have a realistic art style; WoW is not meant to be realistic. It’ art style has aged very well. While vanilla did indeed have lower textures, if you forgot how low detail they are they still stand up quite well.

Realistic graphics tend not to age as well. I think WoW has.

That’s misleading, it’s not the same game is was back in vanilla. Graphically the engine is reasonably modern with DX12, modern lighting, including (limited) ray tracing. Let’s not forgot 64 bit; Lord of the Rings Online is of a similar age and it’s only got 64 bit this year!

Who knows what they have done in the back end systems… vanilla realms were their own self contained thing… now they would be what you would call cloud based system with their sharding/instancing technologies. We have a growing list of accountwide features.

There’s lots you can accuse Blizzard of but technologically they’re at the forefront.

No currently available game engine will provide you the experience of having a world boss with 40 people smacking it and another 1-200 in the zone itself without lagging out, because this is not an engine limitation bur primarily a hardware limitation. The hardware to make it smoother simply doesn´t exist yet. That´s why you don´t have 250 man Call of Duty and Battlefield matches, either, and they could arguably have an easier time doing it because players are much more spread out in comparison.

As far as the OP, if you have to have realistic graphics to enjoy a game because you don´t care about the substance, only the look, then WoW is not and will never be the game for you. Ynd the same applies to every other Blizzard game except arguably Diablo 4.

But with all due respect, what you´re asking for, realism > everythign else, is the primary reason so many games in the last 10 years came out that were all graphics and realism and zero actual substance… You don´t want a fun game, you want a playable tech demo so you can justify investing so much into your gaming pc. :beers:

… and the level of granular detail of combat: each spell tick from every player is transmitted to all nearby players. A gift and a curse.
