Game is really bad looking now compared to newer high graphics games, will it get an overhaul?

We could do with a few player model improvements. I mean they showed that they can go even further with the model detail when they released the dragon-thing race.

I think the standard of the models are good enough, however more customisations should be provided. No, I dont mean fat sliders.

fat sliders ftw!

A graphics overhaul would risk alienating players on more humble hardware but wouldn’t do much to draw new players because WoW, and MMOs more broadly, are increasingly of niche appeal compared to other live service genres.

Simply put, it would be a poor business decision to spend a lot of time (money) on a graphics overhaul to only risk alienating your core playerbase.

Smart businesses tend to be conservative with their cash cows.

probably not. the last time they attempted this in WoD they irreversibly destroyed the vibe of many of the playable races. male night elves went from somewhat cool to goofy and nerdy, undead males went from cool to smeagol-like, female worgens went from hideous werewolves to some guy’s fursona.

this attempt cost them probably tens of thousands of work hours as they are, still to this day, trying to fix some of the races and regularly throw in some extra eyebrows or whatever every few patches to try and make them presentable.

the graphics revamp seemingly killed their ability to make new races, too, as the new and more complex armour pieces need to be fitted and retrofitted to the also new and more complex race models. the last new race we got that looked unique, was unique and was whole was… Pandaren. Every other race is either a clone, like void elf, half done, like Kul’tiran, or 20% done, like Dracthyr.

I think the game looks pretty great for the most part. It has a distinct style to it and on many fronts it is ahead of its time given how large the zones are and how most are effectively a part of a broader set of zones that you can move between with no loading screens.

Some of the older zones are a bit dated and could technically benefit from a touch up but then there’s the risk of ruining the ‘vibes’.

As far as the player character models are concerned, I do like the idea of more customisation options within reason. Especially new hairstyles.

Most people cant afford high end pcs and mmos in general are not played by people who drool for graphics.

Also game looks fine for 20+ year old game.

To be fair I’ve recently upgraded to a hell of a PC, where I can have everything on ultra, and oh my Thrall! Wow has some truly beautiful scenery and effects.

Coming from a lousy laptop with everything set on “low” I’m seeing WoW in a whole new light.

I have an OLED monitor (/brag) and it looks absolutely amazing. I can’t even have the full effects on because of migraines and simulation sickness. I think most people’s issue lies in that it is still cartoony but that’s specifically what I like about WoW’s art style.

In some areas it looks great like buildings, ships, characters, zones, etc. But in others it looks horrible like the plain grey mountains that look so fake and lazy.
I thing it comes down to the individual designer, some are great and some may be bad.

WoW graphics are better than the hyper realistic ones imo

i dont want to play a WoW game that requires a 10k pc

Every 20 year old game looks bad compaired to modern games.

WoW and Blizzard as a whole has an advantage that the art style is not a realistic one so minor updates can increase the logevity of the art.

Personally I feel Retail WoW today looks great.
Also to change engine or artstyle would require a massive overhawl that would likely loose more players than it would attract and wouldn’t be worth the effort IMO.

Crysis says “hi” :yum:

gAME IS NOT BAD LOOKING LOL.

2007 Crysis looks not as good compaired to current games, thanks for making my point.

again, I don’t think this is gonna happen WoW had dated graphics upon release, people still played this game for decades despite better looking competitors.
Most players quit playing because of fatigue or content droughts.

The graphics are timeless. Not every single game has have the best looking realistic graphics.

The cartoony style is great. Also it’s ironic that you say the game is unplayable because of so-called graphics since some of the most popular games currently do not have what could be considered “good graphics”.

As other have said, the game won’t be seeing the sort of graphics single player games have moved to. They don’t age well and over time will need a remaster anyways. WoW has survived this long for the graphics not needing to limit itself to needing such high ranking graphic cards which are becoming far more expensive with each generation.

It sounds like you’re not liking the game anymore due to said graphic looks the developers have chosen and therefore another game may be more of a right move for you as some have chosen to use more up to date graphics.

I see WoW as I saw Zelda: Windwaker. It’s a artistic choice which has helped keep that game to look better over time than say Twilight Princess, probably why that side went back to cel shaded graphics again.

Realistic life like graphics isn’t always the win for videogames. Wukong for instance needs good hardware to make it run good at higher resolutions. WoW doesn’t need as much and therefore is open to more players due to said lower demands on computer hardware.
