The current Great Vault is a product of numbers, statistics and a solution to a problem on how to make player come back every week.
While having a chance for guaranteed loot once a week sounds great on paper for long term gear progression, the reality for player is different - it feels like a chore due to lack of instant gratification. Especially since you don’t know if you will get an upgrade at all so you feel required to do as much as possible.
Ultimately getting no upgrade from great vault feels worse than not getting a drop from boss at all as it feels like you could have done more previous week to increase your chances. This problem didn’t exist with weekly chest or bonus rolls.
Why was bonus roll system better at feeling rewarding? You kill a boss and you have a chance to get loot at that moment and even if you got nothing, you knew the bad luck protection was there for you and next kill might be the one to drop the item. Not saying it was ideal, but it felt more rewarding.
How to improve Great Vault?
Rewards should be unlocked as you progress within week not after week reset.
Let’s say you complete a m10 and that unlocks an item
Pick the item right away and the vault would be locked until reset
OR do more content for more chances in case first item wasn’t an upgrade or you just want to broaden your options
FAQ
Q: But, Chucki, if I help my noobie friend do a m+ 2, that would make me waste one slot with 200 ilvl?
A: If you did +14 before picking it, it would automatically upgrade to 226, essentially helping friend with low keys would still help you as you could see if it’s worth doing higher keys for upgraded iLvL
Q: So if I pick first item I get, I’m done for the week?
A: Essentially yes, or perhaps further progress could count towards next weeks progress - up for debate
Q: This is very dumb idea
A: No u

Personally I think the vault is actually just a terrible idea, blizzard seem only to have put it in to avoid having meaningful drops from the content. I know that personally this system makes me less motivated to play, not more. I’m going to guess that 9.0.5 and the raid drop buffs are a direct reflection that it’s having the same effect on others.
It’s just one more terrible system in an expansion that seems to have endless terrible systems.
Just get rid and put decent drops back in the content.
But the Vault is not replacing Bonus rolls. It’s replacing 1 random M+ item in the weekly box. You can’t really make this comparison.
The instant gratification is in knowing you’ve unlocked another slot in your Vault.
This is caused by one out of two things:
You’re already pretty much full BiS geared. It should come as no surprise that you are unlikely to get something.
You are not doing content that is challenging enough to get better rewards, in which case you can’t really complain about not getting upgrades if you’re not putting in the effort.
I just don’t see how you can draw this conclusion. How is 1 random item from ONLY M+ better than 3 random items from PvP, Mythic+ and Raid? 9 > 1.
Regarding the bonus rolls (which are not really connected to this to begin with as we’ve established), you are just romanticizing something we no longer have. The dissapointment of bonus rolling an item you did not want, effectively making you pay for garbage, was much worse.
I am really curious how you made that conclusion.
If you post your opinion on the internet and also draw incorrect conclusions, you should be prepared for people to disagree.
I’m on phone so don’t ask me why I’m posting that here as it’s too troublesome to quote exact paragraph. Do you still wonder why I cba to have a discussion with you?
As someone who hasn’t had an upgrade from the vault or raids in the past 3 weeks i like this idea. (and not due to having BIS gear but due to having the same slots drop over and over again)
However i don’t see this happening because honestly just look at every system installed by blizzard, it’s designed to keep you grinding and keep you coming back because this is what they believe keeps you subbed.
Fact: the less my main got upgrades and progress, the less i played the game which eventually led to me taking long breaks every single time.
After 17 years they still don’t understand that frustration leads to quitting and not playing more.
Blizz is about to implement the would be solution in 9.0.5. But for some reason they are not taking the extra step to make Valor on par with the Vault. If they increase valor cap to 226 we would be able to work towards a piece of our choice thats on par with anything the vault provides every 4 weeks with the only exception being 2h weapons. But as usual Blizzard has to restrict gear progression.
If you actually bothered to read the suggestion you’ll know that this is about knowing what you’ll get, and if you should unlock more options in case your first one wasn’t an upgrade.
With the current system it’s basically Russian roulette.
so if i got it right with your idea, if i run +14 or higher i would get 1 item offered which would be ilvl 226 per week and if i dont like it i could just run more +14s till i get any item that satisfy me?
i would like that idea, but sadly i dont think they would do that since all those worldfirst guilds would just abuse the sh*t out of it and we get any other crappy rng system since less than 0.1% of wow player ruin the experience for everyone else.
It does, yes, but if I can look at the Vault sooner, and see I get a decent item from option #1 or #2, I can just not bother unlocking the rest. On good weeks, where I run 10+ keys anyway, it doesn’t matter much. But on bad weeks like the upcoming one, if I can run 1 or 4 dungeons instead of 10, that’d be a nice QoL improvement.
