No, you are quite fair in your questioning and you are right, we shouldnât paint the entire place with one brush.
I am going on by the community that exists there, one that they have a Discord for. I shall not single anyone out, because that isnât fair, but needless to say there are a lot of comments which do drip with venom and bile towards others.
Especially with comments such as âWhy wonât they just die?â and " They need to be put in their little cage like the animals they are."
It is definitely run by a collection of roleplayers. And I am glad that you didnât experience the same things that we have. Because no one deserves the treatment that they wished on others.
Iâm sorry thatâs affected you. Sad to say that thereâll always be these two subgroups which will despise each other and bring toxicity to our server.
Iâm sticking to âsubgroupsâ because the toxicity is brought about by a percentage of members within these wider communities, rather than everyone in them.
Unfortunately the conflict will never go away, for so many reasons over the years that itâs barely worth going into anymore.
Itâs the roleplayers caught in the middle of this slurry of filth who suffer. People who just want to RP.
As far as the PCU is concerned, there is only a few things expected:
Donât ERP
Respect the realm rules.
If you encounter an issue, take a screenshot and bring it forward to one of the PCU officers.
Its bare basic really. We are happy to roleplay with any group and do not push away people who approach us unless they perform actions that are detrimental to all parties involved and ruins fun.
Even Iâve gone to Dalaran to see the markets and I would like to visit there more, but its the community there currently that puts me off. Not just the venom attitude, but also the tolerance of the weird things I mentioned in my first post in this thread.
And honestly, while the PCU has its bad share of apples which we admit we have had, the way that this is fixed is by speaking to the officers of the guilds about this to report it so that the offender is removed.
But often, there is no screenshot. Just hearsay. Or recounting of events that happens years ago.
But that is derailing the thread with this and I do request we cease so that the topic can return to the matter at hand, which is the discussion of how the Dalaran can become a âcoreâ when there are things to be addressed, both with the community, and what the events there can offer for the realm.
I donât wish to continue, just wanted to make the point that people exist who donât want anything to do with the pro vs anti feud. I should probably try and sleep anyway, so goodnight (morning)!
Now to help return this back to the topic of discussion:
What does Dalaran have to offer?
It is a lot smaller than Stormwind and Orgrimmar, and if I have to say, limited in what it can offer.
While the Underbelly offers another layer to the city, the PvP area can be a turn off for people as some roleplayers are not eager to RP in a spot where anyone can engage them in combat while they are attempting to type out an emote.
So it can be rather limited if people are concerned about PvP griefing. But then, even as a combat area, I would say that people would rather be out in the field than stuck in a sewer fighting.
So it kind of limits the potential of the brawls.
And then, if people wish to have brawls in the street, who would operate as the guard? After all, who does one call when action needs to be performed?
There is a lot to be addressed to even grasp the idea of Dalaran as a âcoreâ hub.
Personally I find it an awkward place to have brawls and such given Dalaranâs image and design as a strictly neutral, heavily policed city split in three parts to accomodate the factions and their enclaves.
Markets are fun and soâs lounging at the lounge but thereâs your issue; not every place can cater to every taste and itâs certainly not the ideal place for the highly spiritual and/or tribal folk.
Dalaran is very, very niche as a haven for the politically neutral and arcane academics and can only be stretched so far to accomodate other things on a consistent basis.
All I know is Dalaran is a place of mages and scholars that wants to waft around their education, and as a normal civilian youâre pretty much there are a tourist or a newcoming student. Plus that place literally teleported into an active battlefield during Legion, so it is a safety hazard to even live there, people getting teleported into walls and so on.
But I wouldnât mind more active events there, thatâs how I get to unknown places, if there are events there, such as Boralus had an event⌠Dalaran had a racing event⌠events is how people get to placesâŚ
But activly staying there, taking up space for useful scholars? Taking over a building that could be used for future smart brains? Hell no.
Also, if I want neutral RP, I take a trip down to Booty Bay, I had the greatest interactions with Horde members that were neutral, ah yes⌠I can remember it now, chillest greatest RP moment of my time on Argent Dawn.
Having taken a look at the chat from the Dalaran disc yesterday it brings back the point of if you want people to come, it needs to be more welcoming, had people blaming âStormwindersâ and the campaign for causing issues lol âThey need to be contained to their own Cityâ so it would appear some prominent members of the Dalaran community have confusingly mistaken the city as belonging to them which ofc it doesnt and arent to fond of the idea of others migrating there
Edit: From my experience, when people try to claim ownership of a city or town and try to gate who is and isnt allowed in based off whether or not they like them personally, that tends to either put people off of coming, or entices trollish types to come in droves and grief anyway, it doesnt grow the settlement either way
Edit 2: Also not fostering this idea that âStormwindersâ are problem makers in general may be good, Stormwind is the most active and consistent hub in AD in regards to both quality and quantity, whether people like to accept that or not, it is what it is, so trying to attach a stigma to all Stormwind rpâers is laughable at best, if you want growth chances are itâll be from Stormwinds population that you receive it, it goes back to the âthem vs usâ thing.
That ship has sailed, the genie is out of the bottle, the cat out of the bag, caesar has crossed the rubicon. Dunking on Stormwind as the bottom tier of RP is an AD national sport and Iâm more surprised to not see it happen.
Observing this attitude in dalaran as a negative worth changing is a good thing, I suppose.
Dunking on SW is the lames idea of being part of the kool kidz, every other hub is basically dead in comparison or also has incredibly questionable types, its a bandwagon thing.
Dalarans a great hub for what it is, magical stuff, n people into that sort of theme/place, but yeah Booty Bay is such a great alternative also, and lends to other themes, pirate/merc/criminals/randoâs ect, having 2-3 neutral hubs would be pretty epic tbh, Dalaran already has decent activity and stuff going on, putting abit more life back into Booty Bay could be a start of a great neutral hub.
Edit: More old worldy vybes also, with boats that take you from EK to Kalimdor, makes for great travel rp.
Edit: Having spoke to the main admin of Dalarans disc, those who did foster the anti Stormwinder thing have been reprimanded wont name names ofc, but atleast it isnt being tolerated, so thats certainly a great start.
If you have all finished Fighting about silly things, I would like to make a humble suggestion.
We use Gadgetzan as a Neutral Hub.
It has everything Dalaran has (Bars, Stores, a brawling arena) But has one thing that Dalaran is missing. A Zone around it. The desert around Gadgetzan is filled with enemies like pirates, the Sandfury and silithids, giving a reason for the more military guilds to be there (E.G. A Horde guild deploying troops there to stem the Silithid or Sandfury threat.)
And on the subject of Booty Bay, Gadgetzan is a goblin city, so it offers plenty of room for criminal guilds and more shady organizations.
The only downside to Gadgetzan is how old and small it is.
I dont think anyone was fighting about anything, but yeah Gadgetzen is another cool alternative, Booty-Bay and Gadgetzen are directly linked by boat no? been some time since I visited either tbh, but if so, kinda makes Booty-Bay/Gadgetzen potentially one huge mega hub, with travel between being pretty easy.
Ahah right, wasnt 100% sure which, having the two combined as a hub would be pretty dope tbh, maybe even a OOCly neutral cartel type guild could crop up that serves as a kinda neutral âguardâ force or w/e, theres deffo a tonne of potential in a Booty Bay/Ratchet/Gadgetzen group of hubs.
Edit: Iâve always preferred the Neutral Goblin Cartelâs take on neutrality anyways, they arent as political as Dalaran or as likely to take a side, and ofc it just has an entirely different theme that non-scholars can immerse so much into and military groups certainly wont struggle to fit in staying for short durations in such spots, especially given their location being either EK or Kalimdor and likely always only ever a short trip from an event/campaign
Edit 2: Also with Booty Bay/Ratchet having a spot in Kalimdor and EK, if a Horde group begins to feel theres abit too many Alliance about for their liking they can hop on the boat n be not far from their capitol, and likewise with Alliance in Ratchet, its pretty darn neutral in that respect, wouldnt be able to just ambush opposite faction guilds so easily as some do try now and then, could easily justify the neutral npcâs holding them off while you all flee on the ship to live another day.
Iâve been interacting with the community in Dalaran and I think most people are okay. You can avoid those you donât like without too much of a hassle. Overall they did strike me as a friendly bunch. And while the whole âI claim this building as my shopâ is debatable, at the same time itâs what allows their community to set up shops and offer market RP, so I donât mind too much as long as they are actively used to offer content!
If anything, the thing that caught me off-guard about the Dalaran community is that there is very little about mage RP and a lot of âcartoonish, everyoneâs welcome!â vibes (such as demon hunter bartenders, a lot of Horde tribal/resentful Horde races acting in a very civilized way etc).
I donât mind what their community has made - it does work and creates RP, after all! But aside from a couple of lectures, you donât see many mages around, or magical apprentices, or stories about, well, the Kirin Tor. And that is what saddens me a little. For a community bustling with life, itâs a shame you donât see a lot of arcane-oriented RP!
Maybe thats something that will crop up in time, if theres ever a time for a Kirin Tor guild its now, Dalaran is about as lively as its ever been and yeah the whole people owning shops thing to me isnt really something thatâd personally bother me much anyways, if I was rping and walked into a setting where someone is immersed as a shopkeeper tending to customers ect I wouldnt be âthat guyâ to get weird about it, its part of the hustle n bustle of city life and adds another layer for all engaging in the city, only thing I would suggest is if someone who owns a shop has no rp there planned for the evening and no real intention of creating any, if another group was using that place just for the night, for a meeting or w/e, for there to likewise not be a scene created, there is enough spots in Dalaran and while it is busy I doubt at any given moment there isnt atleast one building spare to be used as a tempory location for a regular shop owner rper, co-operation goes along way
Edit: as far as ownership it was more the idea that a few Dalaran regulars thought they owned the -city- not the shops, and felt entitled to gate who can and cant come to their precious Dalaran, fortunately thats been cleared up and those doing such was reprimanded anyhow, so I doubt thatâll become a common occurrence going forward
