I once had a character that came to similar conclusion because existence of ghosts is a fact in Warcraft universe, so it´s undisputable that there is an afterlife. Therefore, unless some deity/power provides you some benefit in life (like people who use the Light or trolls who worship their loa), there is absolutely no reason to worship it.
Ah yes, the literal embodiment of the light (aka lightforged), paladins, priests and whatever else that can use the light.
It’s like saying “I don’t believe in physics”. I mean sure, you can’t believe in it, but once you try to jump off a cliff to fly you will probably see how real it is. Once you try to hit a paladin but he bubbles himself into a shield made out of light, you can’t deny it’s existence.
Otherwise if they meant “they don’t believe in the light to aid them” then that’s another topic. But outright stating it doesn’t exist or so in the Warcraft universe is just insane and I would mark anyone who states that insane in character.
Holding no faith that the Light/ some other deity can perform what you imagine/serve you as you might want does NOT indicate that you also do not acknowledge that force as worthy of a deific status*. The Light exists. Blood elves or humans not believing in the Church’s teachings and thus no longer abiding by them is one thing, but them pretending that the Light has never been powerful and deific has not been the case (not to say that a character with lore-wrong vies is objectively wrong from a storytelling perspective).
I’m an advocate for thought towards worldbuilding and setting in RP, so to say that there’s absolutely no way for someone to conclude & rationalise that the Light is, in fact, not actually a god would be very extreme and silly. To say that we’ve not been shown consistent depictions of people on Azeroth being atheistic, however, is entirely correct.
There is a difference between not putting religious faith and actively worshipping a god, and utterly denying that a creature/force is in fact deific. The former is fairly frequent in WoW, the latter, not. So it’ll just fall down to semantics, as:
*I don’t agree with this, but can see how it could be applied.
The crucial point is that there is a big difference between believing something exists, and -BELIEVING- in something. The Essence of Belief in our world is different to in Azeroth. In our World Faith is belief in something without necessarily guaranteed proof. Azeroth is different, you -get- the guaranteed proof. So an Atheist could totally believe that the Light Exists, without BELIEVING in the Light, in the same way that they could believe the Arcane exists, or Gravity, or Tables, Cups and Spoons. They’re tangible, you can see them or their effects, they have an effect. It doesn’t necessarily follow that people would start worshipping tables or spoons… I mean you -know- they’re there, so why would you need to place faith in the fact that they are there?
Lemme try a better parallel. I know Cars exist. I see them every day, I have been aided by them (Gotten lifts) I know some people can wield them (Motorists). They’re not an item of religious faith to me, but equally, the means of controlling such power is beyond me, but I know people who can. They’re not a religion, they are a practical part of every day life, but not just -anyone- can access or use them.
Ain’t allowed to drive, just been diagnosed with Epilepsy and awaiting the medicine to stop me getting disco hands… Besides, getting splashed by water costs nothing, finding the car afterwards and keying it? Priceless… For you…not so much for them…
I personally can’t imagine not driving everywhere (except Amsterdam, I sometimes have to drive through that bumhole for work and I want to kill myself just thinking having to go there again).
It’s pretty good. Means I don’t have to spend 1000+ Euro yearly on insurance and fuel. And the fear of driving over all since there are many bad drivers. I might be able to drive well, but do other people? No, they don’t and I don’t trust them. I don’t even trust other people to bind their shoes properly without choking themself to death on “accident”. I’ve seen some serious memes in my time as a paramedic mane.
That’s where the problem comes in. I can’t drive. This was a “I might be able to drive well [In the circumstance that I can drive]”. All of that sparks more from the idea that I think most of the people I encounter outside have no common sense at all. I don’t trust them to handle a thing where you can run people over with when I see some people can’t even walk down stairs properly. I might just have some paranoia and PTSD.
In the seven years I’ve been driving I’ve only seen/been close to around 10 accidents, which is relatively few considering I drove 6 of 7 days a week (to and from work) and for years my work was driving around too.
So I spend around 10 hours a day driving, for around six days a week on average, and that for multiple years.
