I’m in the same position,so hopefully some one can point us in the right direction, years ago there used to be be websites like Maintankadin & Tankspot for info ,hopefully there maybe a Discord
DBM Deadly Boss Mods, and the expansion modules like DBM-Classic while levelling, may alert you to tactics you may need to react to. But you probably already have that.
GTFO will tell you when you’re standing in bad, and since the healer is your friend, you might consider moving. Unlike DPS, of course, for whom standing in bad is a signal to blow all cooldowns and stay right there!
Threat Plates is a nameplate addon I find very handy. The nameplates of the mobs change colour depending on whether you have aggro on them. Some other nameplate addons do similar things, but Threat Plates is the one I’m familiar with. Ofc, sacrificing a DPS or two along the way may grant you the favour of the Gods, but it’s probably best to know when a mob is about to eat one.
If you talk to your Class Trainer, you can be transported to the Proving Grounds. Below max level, you can only do the easiets difficulty, but it might give you a chance to set up your addons as you like, and practice a bit.
If all else fails you can always add me on btag (Dhoobs#21387) and I can answer any questions you might have (as long as you’re sticking to DH, DK, Warrior or Monk)
Weak auras is the best thing…and if you are going play monk Wa that shows you your stagger DMG is very useful so you know when to press brew etc
mythic dungeon tool is good
Bigwigs or DBM is very good addon so you know when mechanic is coming so you can prepare
Elvui is a must. I retreated from threatplates to elvui ones and they feel amazing. The rest of it is good as well
Of course DBM/BigWigs and MDT for routes.
Class specific weakaura - Luxthos for DH or something else that you like.
Other weakauras:
Circle for cursor so you don’t lose it midfight, SL dungeons weakauras. Specific affixes weakauras might come in handy later on.
You don’t need much to be fair, tankings miles easier then people realise lol (when they haven’t tanked). Literally just some good weak auras to track defensives. Like demon spikes/meta form/fiery brand. And MDT for SL stuff to plan proper routes and time prides well.
Ideally you don’t want to overlap defensives (in lower stuff), unless you know big damage is coming. So you can smooth out damage atleast having some sort of defensive up (no defensives up and you’ve got the same armour as a rogue). So dont just mash spikes/meta/fiery/fel dev with no thought. Will be times when you have all defensives on CD, and forced to kite till CDs back up. Or face tank through itand make ya healer miserable haha.
Would deffo go brew first, much easier and smoother to heal if ya new at tanking. Far less to keep track of just stagger/brew, and popping celestial.
Tidy Plates / Threat Plates, perfect to see aggro-statusses of mobs (a bit better).
OmniCD, gotta know what cds your healer has available so you know when to kite.
DBM, obvious reasons.
WeakAuras, to track important buffs, debuffs ánd perhaps the cds on interrupts of the party (also included in OmniCD tho). Also find a Stagger-bar, helps you keep track of that as Brewmaster…can be easily overlooked otherwise.
The rest is just awareness and your ability to adapt.
What you realy need is to learn the flow of the class. That means what hits me how hard and when to use what. And then learn to plan a head. When I use this cd on that pack then I can/can’t pull that pack. The biss will do this and I need that cd to survive and the mobs/biss have to be her and face tjat way. Things like that
Don’t forget that YOU are setting the tempo. Don’t rush just because others do, take it at your pace.
Let that mage who speeds forward die with easy heart, let him die again, then vote on kicking him. Then he will have 30 minutes to meditate on what he did wrong, and perhaps next time he will stay behind the tank, where he belongs.
