Unfortunately you have no say when it comes to thistehya, seems like you will just have to keep on dealing with it
Come on. You canât put âhomophobia exists and therefore you should expect it in roleplayâ and then hit us with this. Gay people exist. Of course gay people are going to want to roleplay gay characters. At this point I genuinely just think youâre being contrarian or playing devilâs advocate when nobody expects you to live up to that.
Yikes, again.
Food for thought: HP Lovecraft wrote some of the most racially-motivated, eugenics-inspired works of fiction of his time, to the point that even his contemporaries (1900s) thought he went a bit far.
Besides the obvious edgelords, you wonât find many people today arguing that Lovecraft wasnât racist. You wonât find people arguing that his works only contained racist characters with flaws; youâll find people arguing that he used his platform as a vehicle for hate.
For the record, this isnât about cancelling one of the most prolific horror writers of the era. Just that separating author views from their artâs views is incredibly un-nuanced. The same applies to roleplay; if a person is adamant on not only playing a homophobic character, but also defending their right to do so, it is not a stretch to assume the reason as to why they want to do that.
It is not different to labelling people ERPing with pretend child characters as nonces. An authorâs work (or an RPerâs) will very often reflect the views of the author, especially in a medium like roleplay where our characters can often times be extensions of ourselves.
Do NOT google his catâs name
I feel most people here arenât that fussed with the prospect of homophobia existing in WoW, but more so that they dislike having to deal with it.
But it doesnât exist in WoW. So there should be no reason to deal with it.
The boundless magical high fantasy in this game is fine, but the notion that societies in Wow arenât all loudly homophobic? Now thatâs just unbelievable!
Some of the people agonising about how itâs okay for their characters to be homophobic have a long list of ways to make their characters less like boring garbage - and obsessing about their views on sexuality is way down it.
Keep in mind I was talking about the game itself, not the RPing setting, I didnât expect -lots- of gay characters in the actual game, but iâm fine with it. But RP is player-centric and not reflective often of the companyâs ideals, so I expect a much different atmosphere and wider group of thoughts and feelings towards most subjects, Its like a stewing pot for the internet. Trying to make everyone think and act the same wonât work but blizzard knows that, hence why an ignore function exists, and exists in most games. So you donât have to deal with that person again if you donât want to.
Thanks, I must have missed it before. A lot to get through.
Though I am going to use it now as evidence to prove my point.
It is stated that these things exist, not that every single entity on Azeroth agrees with it.
It is a message of, everyone can be what they want to be. Which is fine.
But everyone can be what they want to be also means somebody has the freedom to be somebody that isnât so much a fan of these things.
Iâm not going to justify to anyone that I am not a homophobe. Anyone is welcome to accuse me of being one and welcome to be wrong whilst doing it.
But this message from the Devâs just confirms such things exist, nothing more.
It is a hero story. But people still play the villain.
Except for when these people are in your guilds, in campaigns, roleplay in the same area as you do, and would be difficult to not acknowledge their existence. That does happen.
And what happens then when you say âI canât see so-and-soâs messages because Iâve got them on ignoreâ? You get called a bad roleplayer for taking IC to OOC.
Frankly I think acting as if everyoneâs overreacting just because you personally donât feel too upset by it is a silly hill to die on.
You can be a war criminal with lore supporting it but you choose homophobia based on your headcanon as your evil trait? That says a lot.
It doesnât say anything because I have already made my stance clear. You just want it to say something so you can write me off as a homophobe, which helps nobody and just causes more arguments.
Its not just because iâm not upset, its because I do think this is overreacting, its not real, its make-believe, you canât know the actual feelings or thoughts of the person IRL on the other side but they said something homophobic in RP on their character so they âmustâ be right? Do you get upset by homophobic characters in books the same way?
Already addressed that one.
This is pure comedy, people discussing how someone roleplays while in reality they are unable to do anything about it.
So all you do is bark, woof, woof, woof.
Nah, I argue in good faith so I wonât make such accusations based on the current evidence. Iâll write you off as a bad roleplayer though.
You can roleplay being homophobic, and everyone else can point out how garbage you are for roleplaying something that has no basis in the gameâs lore.
If youâre incapable of writing good characters/interesting stories without incorporating homophobia somewhere into the narrative, youâre just bad at roleplaying.
This will have some real consequences for Irelia, poor her
Very well.
