In terms of magic or potions, the “transformation” would presumably be more seamless, whereas real world transition involves a lot of surgery and medication (the former of which is understandably frightening), so I’m not sure we can honestly make a direct comparison.
wasnt joking its now a trans character, odd sense of humour
Honestly, the latter is too. Changes in hormones often result in changes of behaviour, and aren’t guaranteed not to have side effects in their own right.
Yeah, I moreso meant the latter and then guessing it would likely be too expensive anyway.
Perhaps magic would be a better use then, since you could probably use an illusion to look like how you want or w/e. But even then - as Starshade (and your ex?) said, some people don’t want to go through the transition anyway.
As I said, personally I’m OK with anyone RPing a minority group as long as it does not fall into fetishization. We should absolutely discourage fetishized characters. They’re more than just an unconvincing concept. I’m not sure who is sacralized here.
Sometimes I go downstairs to fetch a cup of tea and I come back another 50 messages, it’s wild.
We don’t know the mechanics, if there are any, to transition in Azeroth - there are no canonically trans characters.
Ah wait my B i mistook you for that 1 other belf male poster.
You 2 rock the same colourscheme
That’s where you’re wrong, there will be in Shadowlands
key words:
Will be
Shadowlands
So i guess death is now the only known way to transition?
To undeath, yeah
My current main is an alchemist with a focus on researching human transmutation / augmentation and I usually play it off as anything permanent (as opposed to downing a potion to turn your skin to stone temporarily in battle) having some kind of cost which comes with its own consequences. Infertility, dependency, etc.
You gain some things while others are lost forever. Just drinking a potion and instantly curing everything perfectly makes for very boring RP, and I’d rather characters weigh the pros and cons of the choice before committing to it.
I can give you everything* you want – for a price.
*don’t quote on this
There is that too!
but in my ex’s case, they just didn’t know whether they would. In the end though, they were unhappy with their body either way.
As said before, the character may not even be from Azeroth, and it sounds like there were no (reachable) mechanics to transition either (since it sounds like the character presented as female for his whole life?).
You definitely haven’t been irrational. There are all shades of judgements on the thread, I was just wondering your opinion on the topic. Plus, I thought your post was well-written, and used it as a hook to post my own.
Years ago (and I do mean like years ago) a friend of mine had a week long RP angle hinging on that sort of a potion being drunk by accident. It was honestly pretty entertaining.
Gender dysphoria being a hilarious joke and all. : /
Things like body swapping and characters switching genders are still quite common in media and often played for humour. I wonder if we’ll look back on it in the future in the same way that in the present day we look at the old era of films with “Wow, audiences used to be okay with this?”
There’s having fun with something and then there’s making fun of something.
Little Britain for instance was fine ten years ago.
I don’t think anyone familiar with the suicidal distress that dysphoria can cause sees much humour in the idea, no.
As a trans person with devastating dysphoria to the point of suicidal depression, I can absolutely vouch for the truth of this.
I am entirely elated that a trans character will finally be wholly canon in WoW, so me and those like me no longer have to stretch headcanon to have representation (like Chromie’s thing with "male dragon name, female outward appearance when humanoid.)
I have tried a few trans characters in the past, and have of course been met with the entirely expected reactions.
“lol futa gtfo”
You can guess how fun that faceful of bile was.
Recently I’ve had some personal progress (some gender affirming surgeries next week, cross your fingers for me!) and have made another trans character that I intend to try and stick with.
Maybe, just maybe with the level of attention these threads have been getting, and with the general level of queer acceptance shown on these our so often volatile forums, it won’t be an exercise in frustration and grief.
I’m crossing my fingers.
