I personally welcome it, although there is a risk of it coming off as stereotypical. The overly feminine gay male, the overly masculine lesbian, the bisexual who, because they have an attraction for both sexes, must be perpetually thirsty and lustful.
These are all rather tired depictions.
I donāt have Shadows Rising yet
If you have an issue with people rping as trans, then surely you have an issue with anyone rping as a different sex
You said that already, fella.

The topic was trans characters specifically, not the whole LGBTQ+ umbrella. Bad RP may be bad RP, but thatās IMO a little different from fetishization of a minority group, especially when it comes to gender (and gender dysmorphia).
My point was just that the experiences of those minorities are usually harder to grasp (and roleplay) and even if done in good faith can leave a sour taste in some peopleās mouths.
i swear some of the blood elves in this thread are like record players spinning on loop
Getting flashbacks to the āif you say that you must also hate gore you hypocriteā crowd

I actually used to be against this idea. I remember a huge argument breaking out of ADFB a couple of years ago where some people even said that their characters would attempt to kill the trans-character IC as itād be considered āunnaturalā, in response to someone asking about RPing a trans character. The only real argument people have is that āit doesnāt exist in loreā, but transitioning doesnāt have to be something surgical (which is all I can assume they focus on), it can be a lot more than that.
However, as time has progress, I think itās fine. If someone is transitioning IRL, they can reflect their changes IRL as a character too and perhaps let RP be their muse. But for non-trans people? Itās iffy and can come across as a fad, much like people who RP being disabled.

It really is that easy.
A common discussion point is whether or not people without direct experience with someoneās circumstances can truly understand them ā in this case, the question would be whether a cis person could know & understand the experiences of a trans person enough to tastefully portray it in roleplay.
I guess it would be worth noting that Azeroth doesnāt have the same stigma attached to issues like gender and sexuality, so I wonder how that would/should be reflected iC.
(Note: knowing something isnāt the same as understanding it.)
To be fair one of my characters drank a gender bender potion and is now trans
See, I donāt think this is a good argument. Do people who RP war criminals or murderers have direct experience? I hope not. I can understand the call for respect and consideration, and Iād be more willing to agree with that part than with this line of thinking.
I donāt think it should since these things are quite normal in-universe.

my ex had a hard time making the decision on whether theyād transition or not (if given the choice).
Also, a potions can go one of 2 ways. Either its permanent and we have the situation like my ex above or its temporary and the person has to have a supply ready.
oh my days mate youāre a real knee slapper!
Being critical of an unconvincing concept is good but I donāt think that should be a sufficient reason to prevent someone from RPing any type of character.
While itās important to respect peopleās struggles and conflicts, they must not be sacralized.
