on my fresh mage the first week I got around 800 hks and at the end of the week I received a sergeant rank.
The next week I grinded hard. I was spamming AV with 2 hour queues to get in. I tried to be where the action is and I ended up with around 5,5k hks next week.
With total of 6.3 hks I expected to get a high rank. I only advanced from sergeant to first sergeant. I inspected a random rogue of same rank and to my surprise he only had around 1,2 hks. What is going on? Can someone explain this to me? I spent so much time playing and received so little. Is that an error? How the hell that rogue is SS with so little kills?

HKs are pretty irrelevant here. Some will generate more honor than others. Like if you solo kill someone or when you get an assist just because you were near. The difference is big. So HKs in AB/WSG are more valuable than in AV.
To have an idea of how much honor you are getting and also the amount you need you’ll want to use add-ons like HonorSpy and HonorAssist.
And ofc to see how the rank system works. You can google the honor system and get the information you need.
As a short story, there are brackets and every1 grants you some amount of rank points depending on the players participating in PvP(at least 15HKs/week). Higher brackets generates more RP obviously.

It doesn’t matter how many hk’s you get, you want alot of honour per kill, the majority of your kills to be max shared with 1 other person nearby.
It’s difficult to solo kill in AV unless you actively hunt on your own and off the main road.
If you’re ranking in AV (which is a bad choice anyways) you want to let your team play the PVE objectives and push yhe game to victory while you go snipe solo kills.
Sadly you can only advance “so far” each week.
And your honor/ standing is irrelevant to the next week.
The gist of it;
Your honor for each week, gives you a standing; that standing determines the ranking points you are awarded (max 13k if you top the server that week).
And at certain rp threshholds you get new ranks 60k r14, 55k r13, 50k r12, 45k r11, 40k r10 ect.
Then you have decay, each week you lose 20% of your total accumilated ranking points (rank/progress bar). At first that is hardly noticable but for the later ranks, you will need to be amongst the top to not lose progress. And naturally your gains slow to a crawl, the fastest it is possible to go from r13 to 14 is 3 weeks (granted you cant start from 13 and 0% -> then its 4 weeks).
To complicate it further you have a bracket system that your weekly standing places you in to determine the rp gain br 1 -> br 14. In each individual bracket your rp is set within a 1k range (br 14 = 12-13k rp; br 13 =11-12k rp ect).
How much of that 1k range you get is determined by how far away (in honor) you are from the top honor person in your particular bracket.
Alterac Valley is an inefficient way to get Honor. The longer the battleground goes on for, the more diminishing returns you will suffer.
The comments above about the Honor from HK being split, doesn’t really matter, because it’s compensated for by you picking up lots of free HKs from players nearby.
But the DRs make you suffer in AV more.
Each day you can only kill someone 10 times before they give no honor. Your first kill is for example 100 honor. The next time you kill that player you get 90 honor. After 5 kills (easy to do in AV when you are picking up HKs all the time from people around you) you are already down to 50% less Honor than normal. After 20 minute game you likely are getting no honor from the people you kill, yet you continue to play the BG for another 20 minutes. You rack up your “HK” count while gaining next to 0 honor.
Also if you are in a good team then you will be getting far more honor per kill due to the win rewards.
Yeah, it’s mostly about how much honor gain you get instead of honor kills.
AV HK << AB/WSG honor kills give more honor.
