They should have a look at Lotro.

You have neighbourhoods with houses that you have to pay a rent for which can be extended for multiple months.

There are three types:

  1. Cheap small homes with a small upkeep anr less decoration options.
  2. Medium homes with a normal upkeep that have some of the better looking locations in the neighbourhood.
  3. Guild homes. Homes where the guild can places their trophies. It’s a big building.

You can get decorations in a number of ways, professions, quests and events.
For example, during Christmas you can do a quest that gives you a snowman decoration, which you can then place in your garden.
Or what about fishing up a rare fish, bringing it to a taxidermy and have it hanging on your wall.

The upkeep system keeps the neighbourhoods mostly populated.
It allows for small communities to form.

I think they could definitely use it for inspiration.

I liked the player housing system in RIFT although granted I haven’t touched the game for many years now. You could use an set number of locations and some had some prebuilt stuff in it and others you could start completely from scratch. The tools were a bit too basic but some fabulous creations were made.

People could set their homes open to the public to visit. Others kept their private or only allowed friends in.

Garrison’s were not player housing in any way shape or form. They were predetermined Orc or Human structures and no actual home. Very little to customise.

Personally I’m not interested in Guild Housing. Always hated the mess that ended up being and essentially it does not even represent the players (and how could it, we’re all different), just what the leaders decided to do. I wouldn’t bother visiting myself. I want something I can customise and call my own, something I can collect for.

Already have enough of it in FFXIV, so I wouldn’t give it much time if it came to WoW as well.

FFXIV:
Can buy/build an actual house (limited), or an apartment from your respective Grand Company if you’re a cheap-skate or can’t get a plot of land (very hard due to crowding).

Can decorate the inside (both) and outside (houses) - everything from the material/look of the house and whatever you want placed inside/outside. Houses are bought and built on actual plots (limited per server / instance), so there’s no phasing or seeing houses/players magically appear/disappear. Can set them to be public, guild or private, so they can be anything from your own little personal space, public showcases, or a custom area for you and friends/guildmates to congregate. Houses also provide minor activities as well as usable buffs and such, but nothing ground-breaking.

I have my own apartment with a moderate amount of decoration effort but nothing crazy, as well as being in an FC with a pretty big mansion open to all members.

It’s nice and all, but I don’t sign up to MMORPG’s to play housemaker.

Think there’s 3 crucial things that would make the player housing good:

Enviroment:

  • Snow forest
  • Snow mountains
  • Forest lake
  • Forest mountain
  • Small island

Decoration:
Ways to make each house differ, possible grinds for improvements to your house, ways to earn new paints for walls, or new tables/chairs (chairs that you can actually sit on), fireplace is a must.

Rooms: I understand most houses in WoW look the same, but if they found a way to add extra rooms on any side player chooses, like a plot that expands the house in certain direction, or stairway that leads upstairs, would be big.

They should definitely focus on making a house available on all major cities. But I really hope they would give you the option of setting up your house in any zone of the game. Even Vashj’ir would make for some awesome house designs.

I seriously hope that they DO NOT look at LotRO for any housing ideas.

LotRO housing is the worst in any MMO I have played.

Their housing system wasn’t even designed for player housing but was lifted from the DDO Guild Airship system and is really limiting as to what you can do.

If the WoW dev team want inspiration then they need to look at the most comprehensive and versatile housing system that was in Star Wars Galaxies, a housing system that hasn’t been matched in any MMO since.

Lets hope they get lots of input for Player housing before they go ahead with it. If they go ahead with it in the future.

I think it would end up like a Frat house but with Wow connotations… imagine you get home exhausted from slaughtering a gaggle of Gnomes (I think a gaggle should be the collective word) all you want is some peace and quiet, take a bath and go to bed but you find your guild mates playing beer pong whilst playing loud music… that sounds terrib…wait… this could actually be a thing…

Housing is an ongoing bitter saga in FFXIV.

Personally I don’t think WoW needs it - in fact the exact opposite; I think we need to get everyone out in the world together and out of instances.

Maybe Blizz can find a way to do it successfully?

This. Or make it that guilds buy a instanced area were all players can build their houses.

I like the idea about the player housing. If it would be done right it could be rly good, housing is very popular feature in MMOS like SWTOR or LOTR.

Garrisons were a poor attempt of implementing the housing feature to the game since for one they werent rly customizable and for the other to many things were put inside from the portals to major hubs to the things needed for professions so that players didn’t have a lot of reasons to play in an outside world. If we get personal houses implemented it would be perhaps nice if varied ones would be implemented which would represent the different races we have in the game and if we would be able to decorate them with the furniture suitable to that kind of the style to.

How cool would it be if it was Account wide house? House for all your chars. Customizable with all kind of furniture from different ingame cultures.

My own dungeon with shackles, chains…

I wouldn’t like this at all. For me each character is unique and although it could make sense for some of them to share a house, it wouldn’t make sense for all of them to live in the same space.

Although a system that would allow the player to share a house with it’s characters or other players characters could function as guild housing too.

Buuuuut i want one house for all my chars, each having its own room. And perhaps when i enter with one of them to see others in their beds sleeping.
