How did demo warlock turn from the most fun to least fun spec?

Does anyone actually like the current demonology? In my opinion its just alot of unsatisfying spell animations projectiles and sounds. Demonbolt, shadowbolt were both changed in legion and just feel terrible.

I believe that the vast majority of warlock players who played during MOP-WOD would agree that demonology was extremely fun to play then with the soul-fire, demonbolt builds.

I wish they would bring back meta warlock, but forget that it ever existed. Ion would never allow a better playstyle than his version of demo.

I am no fan of the Legion rework either, atleast not how it was executed. BUT, atleast this new version of Demo was kinda cool in Legion. Had a bunch of neat tools. Now its been pruned to hell and back and you somehow only have 5 buttons, but it still feels clunky to play!

I really don’t understand why Demonbolt is even there right now. They might aswell make shadowbolt become empowered when demonic core procs and let that be the proc. Whats the purpose of having shadowbolt and stronger shadowbolt?

I kinda like the master summoner idea. I propose splitting the demo tree into one path for master summoner, with much cooler demons than imp army we have today. Like make the felguard a freakin’ Fel Lord already. Pit Lords and Jailers, lets go.

The other path would be becoming a demon path. If they don’t want to give us meta back in its old form, make it like Gul’Dan where we sprout spikes from our back and go crazy.

Anyway, id like to see a complete overhaul either way. Spec plays really badly right now.

How did demo warlock turn from the most fun to least fun spec?

The answer is rather simple - the person who was charged to make legion/BFA/SL/DL rework doesn’t know what fun is, and also thinks that he/she knows better what is the best for demonology.

Ok let’s just look at what they have done with demonology - they tried to make a puppeteer spec with tons of demons at your disposal and give you the vibe of a crazy summoner or demon commander.

  • First, they completely missed the mark with puppeteer, because till SL 9.1 patch we could not control any non main/prime demon - Dreadstalkers, wild imps, Tyrant, Felguard from grimoire, vilefiend and demons from Nether Portal and Inner demons talent couldn’t have been controlled.
  • Second, they completely missed the mark of demonology being master summoner. Why in the world do you need to cast the hand of Gul’dan in order to summon a group of imps? If you think about that, they tied your single target source of damage - wild imps, to the AoE spell. On top of that they completely ruined your ability to summon demons without having someone in target. It kinda doesn’t feel like a demo is master summoner.
  • Third, the demons you summon only have visual presence on the battlefield, while their actual damage/utility wise presence is just tuned down. Demons are glorified DoTs, nothing more, no one of them would bring some good or unique effect on the battle and be more than just another damage source in the DPS meter of your choice.
  • Fourth, demons are extremely limited in their visual appearance - Imps with few color variants that are very similar to the main imp, felguards, Felguard that are identical to your main one. The real variety of demons is locked behind the Nether portal which is barely usable right now in SL.
  • Fifth, you as a demonology warlock are completely cut from the rest of your main demons, because Blizz pushes Felguard as main and de facto demon for all your needs.Which is completely goes against the design and ideas of the old iteration of demonology warlock which ones apart from having Metamorphosis in their toolkit as a game changer mechanic, had very good and flexible design that allowed players to choose demon of their liking and build their gameplay around that demon, having some pros and cons with that, or learn how and when swap your demon for maintaining the best performance in combat and utility.

This is one of the reasons why I love nether portal and inner demons so much. While the damage they do is so pathetic that it’s almost never worth picking the thing is that demons summoned by them actually have special abilities. You can see it on the damage meter after using nether portal that the demons that come through actually do more than just autoattack. Some have the breath attack, some have shadow strike or some other ability. I mean the damage is garbage but just the fact that there are these random demons that look cool and actually use thematic abilities…I just really love it.

Edit: And I mean, who doesn’t love the “You face not Malchezaar alone, but the legions I command!”. Sends spills down my spine every time I get him to spawn, wish there were more named demons we could call through nether portal/inner demons that would come with their own voice line and special abilities.

Which is why I’m so sad that all we do is summon imps and dogs that just autoattack our enemies and then occasionally summon a big demon that just autoattacks our enemies for a lot of damage.

I’m always calling demo the apprentice summoner. Because that’s the feeling I have while playing demo.

Weaker Version of dots, because they need LoS.

Yes, it’s fun and rewarding.

I like Demo Warlock a lot. Especially in M+ when you can oneshot the pack after your tyrant because you can just throw 40 Imps at them.

Wrong char

I said it last years, blizzard designed the apprentice summoner style only thinking about PvE.

Because you can’t really balance a summoner spec. Either the pets are to strong or to weak. Without the Eye of Killrog “bug” the Felguard would die really often in PvP. But i think the EoK Bug isn’t a bug, they still didn’t touched that.
That’s busted for PvP.

I had hopes for DF that they reintroduce metamorphosis. So we could choose between Tyrant or metamorphosis.

i agree, for the very first time i switched my main for this meme season from mage to demo wl because in my opinion its smoother then mage playstyle and its kinda fun when imps go boom

I would die for meta. PLS BLIZZ dont miss this opportunity and BRING IT BACK

I tbh do like current demo (i did also like old demo)

The only off put i find witb warlock is potientally having to play the other 2 speccs.

Aff is just not fun, hasnt been in a long while.

Destro i just cant get into it.

I do like it, endless utility, always an answer for everything and outside of the meta stuff there are still viable builds that feel less clunky.

But I also agree on this, I liked them a lot in mop as well

Demonology has been solid downhill since Legion, what is that, 5 years ago already?

I’m still in awe that blizzard actually managed to make demo even worse in SL.

In BFA the lineup for beefy tyrant was a lot less cooldown dependant (only imps) and with HoA and corruptions you could blast off some really juicy tyrants and if the planets aligned you could spew out absolute mayhem tyrants (personal record 970%) that would literally destroy even tanks in PvP and everything in PvE.

Like I remember on N’zoth with sick procs just going full on rocket mode to the moon with dps and leaving everyone else far behind, felt like falling of my chair when lining up the tyrant and having HoA tyrant procs one after another.

I am aware that warlocks are very powerful and do bring alot of stuff on the table. However, the intention of my thread was mostly animation oriented and how the rotation feels/how satisfying it is to press your buttons

It really bugs me how often people misunderstand this. I know demo is very good now, but it feels awful to play! But then someone will counter with the fact that it does a lot of dps, thus being fun. I guess to some extent its different strokes for different folks. I don’t really care about pushing the highest of keys. I care about how cool my spell animations are, the sound effects and summoning badass demons from the nether.

Demo feels bad to play due to how its cooldowns don’t align (Tyrant and Griomoire Felguard) and how the variety of demons is very limited.

For example I personally don’t like the amount of Imps spawned. There are ranged Satyrs (purple ones) and many other demon models that has ranged attack. And billion other melee one yet we have Grimoire: Felguard. Like… i can’t describe the disappointment I have for this talent. Why its another Felguard? Like, if someone asked me to make a strong talent but also make it as boring as possible, i think this is what i would do. Make it, idk, a Doomguard at worst.

Edit: Btw, Demo needs a talent that makes HoG instant cast occasionally. A low chance proc would do the trick.

Every summon should be instant, this spec is called master of summons.

It’s not bad, but i generally do not like pet classes.

I would prefer it if there was a way to siphon power from pets to yourself, like demonic tyrant kinda, only with improved abilities on yourself. Instead of having a massively powerful demon.
