Never knew that. I went to Azjol-Nerub because the game itself encouraged me to make my character there back in Legion.
I filtered them by location (nearest to my country, which would be realms in Germany), then I was looking for English realms and then I was looking at realms with high population, thatâs pretty much equal (horde vs alliance) and ofc PvP realm.
Now with Warmode and sharding I believe most of these donât matter.
Check realmpop and see if your faction dominates it 99â to 1â and thatâs all.
I filtered & thought oooh whats RP, that looks ok & super server name so I joined & Yey it was busy, jt had great Guilds & great people, now 25 years later, Im old & everyone is gone, I am the last person left plus never did find out what RP is 
Well Doomhammer wasnât that bad until we were merged with those turalyon schmucks /facepalm that and those two last x-packs then it was the end.
I looked where there was the most toxicity present.

Started just play in AD after years in other servers. All peoole there what i have met on game have been really nice. Like watching people doing RP actually its best thing i know, can just sit and watch hours people playing MMORPG like its supposed play and time to time get dragged to some RP play with others without even noticed that they kinda hijacked me to their RP playing and those have been really great moments for me in game. Really great realm to play and happy to be part of it
First realm : chose the one recommended for new players (big mistakeâŚ).
After this chose another realm for alliance character, this time making a mistake on my own.
Third realm choice was to switch our guild from Horde to Alliance, when I was guild master : this time based on analysis of the realm population. Success this time.
Finally chose two English speaking Horde realm for solo characters, based on population (looked for realms balanced with a slight - at the time - advantage for Horde). Happy about these choices again.
Given that I never transferred characters but recreated a whole new set of characters each time I now have 50 chars across 5 realms (12 level 60, most others 50, a few in between).

I didnât really choose my realm, I just joined the person who brought me into the game on their realm, Earthen Ring. I left Earthen Ring when the realm was showing signs of dying and joined friends on Draenor.
If someone starts spamming anal jokes in trade chat, they are 9 of 10 times a DoomhammerâŚ

I played in Kazzak for years because my cousin is playing in that server. However, couple of months ago, I transferred to Draenor because I found a stable guild that raid in the weekends.
The realm I was playing on died, so I went and found the busiest Horde realm I could and set up camp on there instead.
AlâAkir was my first and the blizz recommended server, then bladefist because thatâs where my friends were recommended, back to alâakir when we ditched alliance. Got perma-banned late 08/early 09 and when I came back a year later the game recommended kazzak.
Was the one recommended for new players. I knew nothing of busy, good realms so went with that. (Azjol-Nerub)
Needed an Italian server, there were just 2: 1pvp and 1pve. I donât pvp so there werenât many choices.
It was a big server, and it wasnât Argent Dawn.
I have no idea how I ended up on my first realm (Nagrand), but probably because the friend who recruited me was there. Now most of my Horde toons are on Bronze Dragonflight (because of another friend) and Alliance on Kul Tiras/ Alonsus (because of another friend). I also have some on Tarren Mill, again because of ⌠well, not really a friend but my husband.
Im the only one who still plays relatively regularly. Iâm not complaining though, I prefer solo play for a number of reasons (flexibility, limited time etc).
came back after a few years break and started on turalyon and went horde against my better judgement because of an ex, few months in and i wanted to try out rp, chose the one with âravenâ in the name because im mentally a 12 year old emo, made my alliance characters, joined a guild, accidentally started maining my rp-alt, ex turned out to be a trashcan, moved entirely to alliance and therefore ravenholdt, discovered raventholdt was a dead server but had made too many friends and grinded too much to start over, so made some alts on argent dawn for funsies
ravenholdt is my chill rp and grinding server, argent dawn is my âi fancy a bit of incoherent chaos todayâ server :^)
