Is it even possible for mere mortals? Are people killing them in their own guilds? Or people just getting groups in /4?

Sweater guild are using scouting bots which alert them and the other guilds they cooperate with on the kills.
Even if a random raid was to form quickly, their advantage is crushing and you and I have no chance.
Edit: the best we can hope for is for the boss to spawn late at night and the sweaters filling their ranks with randoms. However. Ninjaing world boss loot is pretty well documented on Spineshatter so I wouldn’t bother if I were you.

This is correct, they are scouted by world boss coalition, they get discord pings from scout bots the second world boss spawns and have a raid there within minutes via multiple warlock taxis. Even if for some reason they will take randoms if it’s like 4 am and they can’t get a full raid there in minutes, you won’t get any loot anyway, just the experience of participating.
Just forget about world bosses until phase 5/6, when their loot no longer matters and us plebs get to try them for fun.
