How do you choose a name for your character?

Usually from stories/movies/shows/history that I fancy. For example Torchia is the name of a fictional character from the movie called “The Ninth Gate”.

I usually do a little research on what culture Blizzard based the name of the race of my choice, and based on that I use a name generator to generate names for me. If I find one I like I either try it, or if it is taken I try to modify the end of the name.

The only exception is my (former) main character. It is an old alias I used from a young age, and thus it is kind of a tradition for me to name one character of mine Athiyk (which is a drow word).

Naming tauren for me is slightly different, as I look for old native american names to use for them instead.

This is a bit like “how do you see when you are blind”. You either have lively imagination or not. If you train said trait, all kinds of odd things will pop into your head.
But OK, there are some basic things: Play with words, how they fit together, how you can modify them to create a new meaning. Sometimes you can just take a regular name and start modifying it, maybe simply phonetically, and more it more interesting.
In your case:
Sergey
popculture humor: Zergey (great for demonology warlock)
Sargey (WoW themes modification - Sargeras - also good for warlock)
Of course such names would probably be the first thoughts others have, too. Now come further steps.
Sargey - what does it sound like? “Sarge”. Short for Sergeant. Now you could just take that and combine it with the original and you get Sargeyant (or the ‘lookalike’ - Sargevant), and dunno, maybe this name is even already unique. And you can do all kinds of mods with that name. If you got a female char, you could make it Saragant. Or make it a gent. Sergeagent. … Oh wow, look, I made an “agent” out of it without even aiming for it.

Of course few things beat the glory of popculture humor in multi-layered puns like naming a worgen balance druid “Owlverine”. (Sometimes less is so much more - just two letters flipped.)
Or check out my dwarven outlaw rogue “Meadpool”: https://worldofwarcraft.com/en-gb/character/eu/magtheridon/meadpool (He’s riding a rainbow unicorn, of course.)

Sometimes I make new chars solely based on a name idea.

Well, you already have the options of Jenkins and Ironbane. Isn’t that amazing? /s

Made a druid. Named him after a spell rumoured to be added in a later phase of DF, Stun Seed.

Enemies are stunned when they read it backwards.

When I was younger (a child gamer) I couldn’t really think of a name so my mom would name my characters after Middle Eastern foods.

If they are available I would use that. For my character Anizah it’s the Anizah Arab tribe. Seeing as there is some Middle Eastern elements in blood elf architecture I saw it fitting. But now I realize it sounds more Darkspear than anything because of the “Z” letter.

Cheers :clinking_glasses:

My main name here is just came up with it.

Later someone told me there is some history figure that almost has the same name.

The rest rest are mostly from fromsoftware games.

I usually pick names from the places I visit. Like, my Hunter’s name is “Trenta”, which means 30 in Italian, and it’s the number of the street I live in.

This character has the name of a mountain I’ve climbed, Vandalino, which also happens to mean “of the Vandals” (probably that mountain was on a Vandals’ route).

This grants me 2 things:

  1. Many medieval names/surnames come from locations, whereas numbers are usually for slaves or orphans and the like, so it’s fitting
  2. I get to share my nationality (not only to people outside of Italy but to Italians as well, as I only select names near where I live) in an elegant way, which to me has its share of importance

I would probably have gone for “Falkor” or something, but I was watching this documentary on Netflix right before the release.

It’s called Ancient Apocalypse, very interesting take on this btw, and I believe in episode 2 Graham Hancock went to Mexico. When I heard the name, I was like. yeah, that’s it!

Was already taken, so I had to make a slight adjustment ;).

On most of my other characters though, I go for anagrams of either my wife or son’s name

It just comes naturally.

I just look at the character I created and pick what I think fits, from my own head.

This ones name comes from Tolkien.
My Draenei alts are all named after places, races, names from Babylon 5. E.g my draenei paladin Minbari
My worgen hunter is named Keidran Keidran (IPA(key) /ˈkaɪ.dɹən/) is the collective term for multiple canine and feline based, bipedal, sapient creatures in Twokinds - on online webcomic
My nelf deathknight is named Beanstalk - just because I love the sound of it
My DH is named Avengers because the mask make her look like a super hero

I got a lot more. Click my name, then profile, then the guild. All characters in that guild are mine
I never seem to struggle for names

I’m coming up with something modern, zoomer and offensive. And making that into a nickname. That’s it.

I’m not a role-player, but I want my characters to make sense lore-wise. This is reflected in race/class combo and the character’s name.

Head-canon…
