As the name implies, only one. The others, even if well-geared, are alts.
What exactly, is your definition of âmain characterâ?
Because most definitions I find, are like this:
Someone who you can make a movie about and have it be interesting they are quirky and not basic.
A protagonist (from Ancient Greek ĎĎĎĎιγĎνΚĎĎÎŽĎ, prĹtagĹnistá¸s âone who plays the first part, chief actorâ) is the main character of a story. The protagonist is at the center of the story, makes the key decisions, and experiences the consequences of those decisions. The protagonist is the primary agent propelling the story forward, and is often the character who faces the most significant obstacles. If a story contains a subplot, or is a narrative made up of several stories, then each subplot may have its own protagonist.
Oh, look at that!
If a story contains a subplot, or is a narrative made up of several stories, then each subplot may have its own protagonist.
By Wikipediaâs definition, if a work (in our case, the time we spend in game) contains several stories, each may have its own main character. As it happens, my two mains have their own stories, and are thus, both main characters.
Devos voice: Your definition of âmainâ is flawed!
I see all my charters as mains becuse i play them all equal. Ofc some of them i play more. But i try to gear them so thay all are at same ilvl.
Depends when you started. I started 3 alts recently, so itâs going pretty slow, but if you played since like December, yeah you couldâve geared both through vault by now.
The curve also moved for pvp, you couldâve gotten in rbgs with like 190-200 ilvl easily then, now they want 210-220.
I mostly played during 8.0 and 8.1, so there wasnât much grind, just farming m+ for ilvl and some azerite gear.
Kind of defeats the purpose of calling something a âMainâ if you consider other characters mains tooâŚ
To me itâs a âMainâ that you primarily play with, and a âMain Altâ, the 2nd most played.
In older expansions, yes no problem. In the newest 2 not so much. I had the same issues as you and ended up with 13 characters that I have to level every time a new expansion comes out. I found my self lately leveling and gearing my Druid first because itâs the easiest. Then after I get flying I drag the other 12 characters to max level and gear them with whatever I get on WQs. Doing the same WQ 12 times for one piece of gear for each is already mind numbing enough.
My advice, pick a class with multiple specs one of them being a tank (or you can also use a hunter, BM works nicely) and hope you can get a decent looking race for that class then work from there.
Level and WQ as a tank (or BM hunter) and do all the other stuff as the spec you really like to play.
PS. As soon as you get to 5 characters, STOP!!! If you donât you will burn yourself out in the next expansion (The return of the revenge of Sylvanas Windrunnerâs former roommate strikes back⌠or something like that) in about 2 or 3 years from now.
I play two equally. Sometimes oneâs ahead, sometimes the other, sometimes theyâre perfectly equal, depending on mood, rng, etc. Thus, theyâre both mains.
An alt is a less important character. If you consider multiple characters equally important, theyâre all mains. Or theyâre all alts, and thereâs no main, but thatâd be even more silly.

Well, you can have up to 50 characters in your account. So, technically, you can have 50 mains. But in practice⌠well, it depends on how much you play, and how much time you can spend with one character, and how much you can manage that character. I have only one main, ww monk, and aside from her, I have 1 other max level character (a huntard) and 3 other 50 level characters which are waiting to be maxed. But I can only play decently with my monk. The others are only there to mount farm, gold farm, proffessions, other covenant stories, etc. Find the class and spec thatâs most suitable for you, and when you get bored from your main (it happens for short periods), play with the little ones.
50 ? u sure ? i have more
Horde characters donât count
I donât about the the thread, but gonna like it for the name.
As a bit of an altoholic I have multiple toons and more than one account - some just made so I can play them to figure out their playstyle that makes me better at playing others as I understand the group comp better or what I am facing in pvp.
As of now I have 6 level 60âs, 4 of which are up to date on covenant one is playing catch up this week and one is semi retired. All are over 200 iLvl, couple over 210, but none do rated pvp so none are 226 fully fitted outâŚ
Of those, pretty much decided which two I will be playing for the rest of the expansion.
It comes down to time and repetition of dailies and weeklies- how much time do you want to spend every week just doing dailies/weeklies just to maintain position?
Two is easily doable. Four is a real drag.
Iâd suggest one ranged one melee, and choose a class that can do more than one role in the current meta for at least one of them.
did you play any other rpg game? if so pick something that is similar to that character. you might find them matching since all games copy-paste from each others.
but if you never played any other rpg games? Not even a solo single player 1? then go for the easiest class as startup(Retribution Paladin) to get a clue about the game and once you face other classâs in pvp or group with them in pve, youâll understand the basics about them all and then you can decide which one you wanna main to switch for it.
unless you have a lot of time to play, 1 main.
It depends on how much time you have to put in. It can be gruelling to keep multiple characters up to date and do the content equally on them all.
I only ever have one main but some prefer to enjoy various playstyles and classes.
I have 2 mains, cuz I like them both
I have three characters at max level, out of which this one is the main, I have another priest that has almost the same gear / conduits / stuff, and a monk that has nothing.
Right now im looking at 4 classes (Ret Paladin/Warrior/Disc Priest/Fire Mage)
I think im going to have 2 classes but im not sure which ones Im probably going to do both pve and pvp what classes would you guys recommend?
Having a main refers to having a character that you can single out as one that you mainly play on or focus gearing etc over other chars.
Main = mainly focused character/mainly spend my time paying this character
If you do not mainly play on one char over another and split time rather evenly over multiple chars then you donât have a main and swap between a section of chars.
Itâs that simple.
