Has there been any tipping point where you started caring more, or caring less?

No…never cared prolly never will. From time to time I can appreciate a good trailer or cutscene but thats never while doing it, always on youtube several months after ive been to the place in the game for example.
Tldr: no i skip everything lore, quest-texts and cutscenes.
I dont care about the stupid WoW`s lore…
Elves, furry vulperas…
I just play WoW for the PvP which is fluid and cool.
If I want a story, I play SWTOR. Now started the new New World story and its cool.
2/10
Wrath of the Lich King and before I cared a lot about and loved the story. After that it went downhill . More recently the poor storyline and the political correctness made it even worse and I lost touch with any semblance of interest for what is left of the lore.
I never really cared for story in MMOs that much, I prefer Singleplayer Games for that aspect.
Only in World of Warcraft, or is that the case in all video games you play?
I don’t really, stopped caring after SL.
I’ll read and listen to every quest and enjoy the process as it happens but that’s about it. I won’t buy wow books, won’t go into a story from 10 years ago to piece whether it was retconned or not.
The recent story is also just not memorable enough for me to tell you even half of it despite me taking my time on launch. I can, however, say that some gameplay segments were done really well to support the story. Unfortunately that’s a very minor part of it.
My care: 100/10
Current lore/story dev team: -100000000000000000000000/10
PS: On my behalf I mean the original, already established lore, not that nonsense we are having since middle of BfA.
I’d say I care enough to always read every single quest, to mouse over every NPC to see if they have additional lines and to click on characters multiple times to listen to their “irritated” emote. I also care enough to sometimes repeat certain questlines on multiple characters, like the intro to Draenor (in my opinion the best introduction out of any expansion).
But like Alýsea, that’s where I stop. If it doesn’t exist in WoW, it doesn’t exist for me, and any inconsistencies due to lack of adequate explanation in-game is massively annoying me.
I’ve never been particularly into the lore of Warcraft. There are some stories and moments that I do like but after so many years of convoluted poop, character personality/motivation contortions and endless retcons I no longer really care. The biggest tipping point for me was Shadowlands, which ruined a bunch of previously interesting or mysterious things and turned the entire WOW multiverse into a bunch of Intelligent Design crap.
I cared up to the point where I found out playing the game wasn’t enough, but you’re supposed to read books/comics/short stories w/e, watch the movie, play 10 other different games, and a whole lot of other stuff I have zero interest in.
This is also why I don’t give a flying rat’s behind about the marvel universe
I hate lore. It only serves to damage and limit what the game could be i.e. race/class combinations being tied to lore.
Story, depends on what is happening. Anything relating to the Legion is 10/10 for me caring about it. I would like for me to always care about the story but most of the time it is just sub par. I am looking forward to Undermine(d) though as I love Goblins. I hope I’m not let down.
Characters, there are only two I 10/10 care about and they are Thrall and Illidan. I’d say Sylvanas is 8/10 but as for the rest, I don’t care at all.
The major Shock-moments of BFA definitely made me care less about the story. Shadowlands probably worsened this more.
DF didn’t really improve much in terms of Story, it was a poor story told badly. BFA was probably a good story told very badly.
So up to around BFA I was interested in the story. In TBC I cared enough to read some wow-wiki or similar about the names I heard (only raid I did back then was Kara a few times). Wrath to Legion had reasonable stories and lore. Although they did drop the ball on occassion, WoD missed a lot of story so it wasn’t done very well.
Since Legion, I’ve more or less given up on the story. I’m doing the campaign in TWW and it’s a lot better than DF but still a bit meh. I don’t really care about The Weaver and the other characters in AJz Kahet. I’m not doing their events nor grinding their rep. I just cha anymore.
It used to be 10/10. After Legion my interest in the story and characters dropped drastically + all the characters I loved are mostly dead or irrelevant.
Imo the story went in the wrong direction, far from the Warcraft roots. The story was well balanced for a very long time. Always present intolerance between the two factions, but also cooperation when necessary. We had good, bad, honorable, evil, mysterious, neutral, fickle characters, etc. Now the whole story along with the characters has been reduced to a basic semi-marvel fantasy. Factions have almost no point anymore.
TWW is slightly better than late BfA, SL and DF, but it’s all still thin.
I only care when it’s interesting.
I paid some attention to the campaign to see what this expansion is about. My take: bugs, bugs, Anduin, some humans and Xalatath.
It’s better than Dragonflight for sure, but they need to put some serious work to revitalize this aspect of the game.
Also, it is a fact that players are more interested in stories they are personally invested in.
I know people love to hate on faction war but BFA was the last time there was any serious engagement with the lore among community and fans of WoW.
Most of us are apathetic at this point but there could always be pleasant surprises and I haven’t given up on TWW lore yet.
I think I really enjoyed it up to Legion. WoD was a bit ?? but you know, it was a parallel universe, whatever. BfA put a big dent into it for me, and SL looked like a lore trainwreck and generally unappealing so I skipped it. DF didn’t make me care more again about the lore even if it was quite enjoyable to play an an expansion.
3/10? I’d like it to be higher
Depends on the expansion and characters involved, so “1-10” doesn’t work as a scale for me.
I love the WoW universe and its lore. There are aspects I find a little dull and aspects I love the most, as there will be with any universe. For example: loved the TWW story, sincerely hate the idea of Undermine and will probably skip it until Midnight pre-patch. The only short story I’ve not read is about the Goblins. I sincerely could not care less about them.
I also really dislike that they have retconned some lore in their new book that happened in the game and I am choosing to ignore it, since quite frankly it makes no sense. Don’t mess with in-game lore if you’re not changing it in-game!
The scale thing doesn’t really work for me but I would have to say that I enjoy the questing experience more than the actual lore experience in more recent expansions. My last favourite is Legion. I know that the current is a slow burn though and I am really looking forward to it.
0 care, they butchered the story post Wrath anyway.
