Hold up. The Night Elves have an other culture. They have Elune on their side. And also have Cenarius on their side. Can it be that the godlike creatures blessed them with this ability.
That’s why they support the warfront, because they can get maybe killed. I mean really?! Do you wanna say that they are so naive that they just join the warfront?
Possibly? Has it been shown that Godlike creatures are fallible in WoW? Yes, yes it has.
What do you think a soldier does? They fight Wars, none but the most demented go into such a situation with a deathwish, but that is an occupational hazard, if that sounds overly brutal I am talking as someone who joined his countries Armed Forces. You don’t -want- to die, but you think there is something worth fighting for. Generally friends, family and home, or possibly even a concept like family tradition. You don’t plan on dying, but you know it is a possibility. I mean a Night Elf in that situation is no different from any other warrior or soldier of any other race. Why does a Vindicator risk their millennia of life in order to fight? Why does a Blood Elf become a Blood Knight or Farstrider? What prompts a human to give up their life on the farm and become a Footman? Just because you know death is an abstract risk doesn’t mean that when it actually happens it is any less traumatic when it happens to you?
But you don’t know that. You don’t. You’re not going into it with that mindset, because being killed is something that happens to the other fellows, not you. I mean what is the alternative? To not fight? To passively accept that fate anyway? You don’t know they can raise you. People have resisted! People have resisted! Surely you are one of those people, right?
That mindset only works if you are prepared to submit to the inevitable, the Night Elves as a whole do not strike me as the passive types who will meekly submit.
I think it is completely fine to willingly be raised up, working for the people what killed you, murdered your friends, genocided your family and everyone you knew from home, to now go on killing the leftover people of your kind because they couldn’t stop the people you worked for and say how your god has abandoned them despite now fighting the Night Warriors which are basically avatars of the god you said has left their people to rot.
Ye this is just completely fine, everyone who has a problem with this can’t appreciate what good quality writing this is.
People still think Bram Stoker is a pretty shiz hot writer.
Seriously, the concept of those risen from the Undead vengefully turning on all they knew when alive is not new, nor alien, or should not be.
It is a pretty used fantasy trope, I mean at its most basic level, this is the story of every zombie movie pretty much, it is the story of Dracula, it is the story of ‘I am Legend’, it is , to use actual historical figures the (tragic) tale of Ivan Grozny, or as history knows him “Ivan the Terrible” (Actually used to mean “Ivan the Awesome” he was a genuine good guy before things went bad) , it is Anne Rice’s Vampire Chronicles, it is Trotsky, Lenin and Stalin, it is Adolf. It is every person who once stood for something only to suffer a massive crisis and turn against all they once loved with a desire to tear it down, and become something dark, and horrible.
It happens. Its not bad writing, when it actually happens.
I’m pretty much the same. ‘Dracula’ and ‘Watership Down’ are two of those books I can just read and re-read constantly, well, not constantly, I mean, a bit of time between, but yeah, the stories are just fantastic.
I have that thing., I love Fantasy as a genre, I love Tabletop games, have done for more than 30 years, I love Fantasy LARP, have done for more than 20 years but I honestly genuinely think that the worst thing to happen to the whole genre was bloody Tolkein. I almost wish he had never written a book! No Tolkein means no Windrunners and their Boytoys which is pathetic misogynistic writing with absolutely no place in any serious fantasy franchise. I don’t want overwritten bad guys with no flaws apart from the magical artifact of Ming that can somehow bring them low. I don’t want plucky underdog heroes who somehow do the thing despite the odds and having no hitherto capabilities to do so.
I’d rather characters who actually have story which is more than “One day, seven dwarves turned up in my house, wrecked the joint and got pissed”. Fantasy game writers need to put down their copy of Tolkein’s works and go “Do you know what, that isn’t the only book in existence, we can write different stories”
They need to do that, and accept the references and influences from his works, but not be purely steered by them, I mean the Windrunners are just f*cking pathetic. All three of them. Ditch the lot and be done with it.
Probably a good thing poor young Lirath died before seeing his sisters turn into sexual deviants.
That would not be a pleasant thing for a young mind to witness…
Tolkein has a lot to answer for, and a large part of that, is how he appropriated Dwarves and Elves. You want proper Dwarves from real Life Legends? That’s your Dark Irons, you want proper Elves from real life legends? That’s your Blood Elves. Neither were nice huggy with humans types, they did not give a feck about humans. So this cuddly WC fantasy of Humans Dwarves and Elves is just that. The Races in game actually appear to be much more what they are like in legend.
But Tolkien’s dwarves are like that. They are a xenophobic, tight and isolated bunch that won’t even talk to other races in their own language, because they would steal it. They are greedy and hold a grudge, they are peerless warriors, etc. Hardly the hugging type.
I mean, Tolkien set the bar for this, but I wouldn’t really blame him for the fact that people are incapable of going beyond him.
Well you should start to worry.
Because you know that when Deathwing came, the only city he destroyed was Night Elves city Auberdine + Night Elves park in Stormwind.
Garrosh when he started the War he began it with attack on Night Elves.
Sylvanas did the same.
Even Sargeras when he was choosing where to hit with his sword, he hit in to Night Elves city in Silithus.
But now, when Night Elves have no cities and no lands left, from now on Blizzard will choose somebody else to strike in the beginning of addons. Who will be next punching bags?
So basically, you blame Tolkien for doing what you just said you want writers to do…
You said “we can write different stories”. That is exactly what Tolkien did. He wrote something different.
It’s not exactly his fault that his works became so well-liked that they are being massively copied.
And explain to me how are the Noldor who butchered their own kin for the sake of gaining a couple of jewels the hugging type. And stole their ships. And then left most of their own kin to die while crossing Helcaraxe.
And then there were two more Kinslayings. And don’t forget that everything what happened to the Elves was happening because of their own greed.
The Elves presented in Lord of the Rings proper are a bunch of mixed-blooded veterans who were dragged through the mud for thousands of years. Is it really so dumb that they might actually be wiser than a standard short-lived human? Many of them literally went to Heaven and back. Elrond is a freaking brother of Elros, the first king of Numenor! How could a being that is thousands of years old NOT be ridiculously wise? Galadriel lived in Valinor and went to the Middle Earth alongside Feanor. She lived in a perfect land. She isn’t going to be dumb and human-level flawed.
And I don’t get how can Tolkien’s Dwarves be “cuddly”. Greedy beyond measure, stubborn and xenophobic. They won’t even talk to others in their native tongue for fear of it being stolen.
In Hobbit (book), Dwarves already launched an attack against humans and elves before Gandalf stepped in. Because of gold.
And I guess you forgot the death of Thingol and the sacking of Menegroth.
By the way, Mim’s people were hunted to near extinction by those cuddly Elves.
Accusing something of being misogynistic, while calling women sexual deviants for their personal choice of partner?
HOT TAKE FAM!
For someone who claims to indulge in fantasy for so long, you seem to know very little on how Tolkien was an essential part for inspiration, of the vast majority of fantasy works, whether you like his works or not.
