This and also there’s quite nothing like having an argument about whose dad class can beat whose in a fight to suck all the fun out of an RP scenario.

The mage stands proudly over the defeated Akamito, the Tauren eating dirt on the ground beneath him after being dealt a devastating blow.

“You are nothing little Tauren” the mage cackles with an evil mirth.

“No … not this day.” Akamito grumbles beneath his breath, sand and grit scraping against his tongue. Slowly but surely he climbs back to his hooves, raising his axe in an act of final defiance.

“Fool, you are no match for my sorcery. I will bring this to a swift end.” cried out the mage, raising his arms and speaking out the vile incantation that would bring about his doom.

Before he can close the distance, the spell is flung from the fingertips of the human spellcaster and hurtles to strike him directly in the chest. But at the last moment, from seemingly nowhere, Akamito’s axe is replaced with a smaller axe and a rough but effective shield.

“NANI?!” the mage screamed out, as the spell rebounded off the battered surface of the Tauren’s shield, obliterating him instantly.

Standing over the dust that once was the mage, the Tauren chuckles to himself. “Get juked”.

Does it? Is it really strength if you add some obvious big crippling flaw?
What about a big strong warrior who’s actually intelligent as well?
Not everything needs a silly flaw to be balanced. Hell, not everything can be balanced.

Tbh yeah, I can see your reasoning behind that.

I could be just too much a fan of weak characters overall, though. I’ve seen so many RP characters who never lose a fight that I love the prospect of someone who is altogether v vulnerable.

The big reason is to avoid a mary sue, though personally, flaws of personality are more fun to rp with and more interesting than combat weaknesses or strengths.

First, have weaknesses. Even a lv20 DnD character has a weak spot or Achilles heel. And no just being quirky or socially awkward is not a weakness.

Second, don’t show off and don’t pick fights. If someone pushes you into a fight, don’t be a nob and godmote but don’t feel like you have to bend over so your death Knight loses to farmer Joe. Give and take in every fight.

Third, ideally play with fellow strong characters and forge events around eachother. Then you can go full Dragonball Z and it’s a blast. Often literally.

Fourth, have a character defined by more than their power. Nobody likes a cardboard cutout.

Do a Elric Of Melniboné RP.

That way you don’t need to worry about nerfing yourself for the sake of others because if you do the RP right you’ll be killing everyone you meet so your sword doesn’t nerf you to death.

Last I checked short of being boated with magic items you can’t have a 20 in everything. And by lv20 anything less than 20 in a stat is basically a weakness.

If you’re an epic mage it should theoretically take you quite a lot of mana to do super powerful things, which is enough reason for you not to dab and flex on people around you unless it’s extremely necessary in an event.

Same goes for any other class, just change out mana for any other resource they might use (concentration, will, physical exertion etc). If I’m a mage who has a really chiseled jawline and is very powerful I’d not want to be wasting my mana on things all the time because that’d mean my companions are worthless so why would I bother with them?

My hunter can use crows and other corvids to use eyes of the beast IC without even moving but that takes an awful lot of concentration to do and for the most part leaves his actual physical self vulnerable. If there are perfectly good scouts available or he’s able to leave where he’s at to scout with his own senses why would he bother? That’s why I rarely have him do it until necessity demands it.

Bards have no weaknesses

I RP a powerful character by being very powerful in her fields of expertise, but in other respects other characters will easily out perform her.

Same except my character has expertise in all fields :smirk:

I don’t get the joke : (

I tend to be of the opinion that the more powerful you make your character, the more authority you take on the more responsibility you have towards making dealing with you an enjoyable experience.

Face me on the field of battle, I will show you what true expertise looks like.
