I’ve leveled with The Rake (1.2AS) and Boar, I’ve also tried Owl and Bat. Leveling I have to say its Boar. Charge on a 25sec CD Vs dash on a 30sec CD AND the extra AP for Bite after charge pretty much guarantees I won’t pull agro

I’m a simpleton.
I usually take a cat and stick with it. Being a night elf it feels like a suitable companion. Had my phases with visuals but I prefer the Moonsaber.
Used to have an additional wolf back when WLK was retail. Some named timber wolf from Dun Morogh, from the little island from the lake near Gnomeregan.
On the upside, cats eat fish and meat, so they’re easy to please. Then there is WLK where happiness is automatic for Ferocity pets.
Considering how beast mastery was working this time, my hunter gameplay was very basic. I could afford Hunter’s Mark, and that’s it. Auto shot and pet as a DoT. Any more and I was guzzling water worse than a classic mage. (Until AoV.)

I am a Boar kind of guy as well, get a goretusk early, then get him an armor “upgrade” in RFK.

I still have my best buddy boar, Bellygrub from Redridge, on ERA. Called it Pumba
Boars are great pets, they have charge and eat everything.

For me it’s owl with screech ability as aoe agro shout ,hands down the best pet which i use almost everytime and everywhere, 2nd one is cat(Broken Tooth which i had on all 4 hunters i created Classic- Era -Hard Core-Anniversary) cause i love soloing DMT and sprint and prowl is most usefull ability down there. As 3rd pet i usually go for worg from Blackrock Spire,but this time having TBC in mind i will go for Wind Serpent…
Boar for leveling until 30+, then cat with dash until 60. Then the 3 u can have are Son of Hakkar, Broken tooth and Bloodaxe worg and ur all set for all content

Owl is my favourite.
You want damage: cat
You want best pet: owl
You want not to have to deal with food restrict and have best buddy for life: boar
Cat is generally way to go. Unlike owl cat can eat fish. Cat will remain best in raids.
I prefer wind serpent for soloing and questing. The lightning breath ability pulls a mob nicely away from the others and prevents accidentally pulling too many.
Oh, and they look cool as well.
