My pet run away after I went idle. After that my new pet didn’t have pet tab in Spell book, I’m missing “Control Pet” beast mastery ability and after I changed pet again, it can’t learn any first level abilities as those won’t show up in the spell book.
If it’s the first three hunter quests then that is training pets and you wont get any special bars. When you do the quest so you get the feed ability and tame your real pet you gotta feed it lots until the friend lvls go up otherwise it might leave you. The higher your friend lvl the less often you need to feed it food to keep it happy and not running. You can check it with Shift+P. The green icon mean your pet is happy and will do best dps, if it’s yellow it’s not so happy, and if its red it’s super bummed at you, coz you’ve not fed it it’s requied food (hold mouse over the happyness icon to know what food the pet eat and likes). You will also get the petbar when you get your real pet.
You have a trainer for yourself and a trainer for your pet. You should at least go and get a new growl every 5 lvls or so, or you won’t be able to hold aggro very good. Your pet will always be 1 level under you. You yourself must be the same lvl or 1 lvl above the pet you want to be able to tame it.
To get abilities for your pet is different in classic than retail. You don’t get bite, dash etc from the trainer you gotta go and stable your pet, find the mob that have that ability, tame that mob and use that ability until it says in chat in yellow text that you’ve learnt it. THEN you can abandon the mob, go back to the stable and get your pet out and then use the learn tool skill and teach the skill to your pet. Skills also have different lvls from different mobs to learn from too. AND some skills you can’t teach a pet. Like, charge is for pigs, and can’t be taught to a cat, for example. You shoul go here -> wow-petopia -> classic -> Pet Guides and check out that section.
You can also use VanillaWowHunter page -> go Pets -> Pets by Zone to find which pets have what skills at what lvl in the area you are. I hope this helps you. <3

On Classic, you don’t get a “Control Pet” ability, just a number of pet related spells.
Ah, it was “Beast training” in classic. It seems that blizz fixed this finally.
