I struggle seeing what there is to do in WoW

Hey everyone! Just a quick heads up before any “drama seeking forum goers” snipe down this post… This is NOT a “DF sucks and there is nothing to do” post.

However I could really use some advice.

I started playing WoW during last patch of Legion, and ever since I have been pretty “casual” while playing this game. Not casual in the sense of “time spend”, but casual in the sense of “grinding done”.

WoW has A LOT of “grind” mechanics, whether it being:

  • Dungeons
  • PvP
  • Tmog and mount farming
  • Professions
  • Reputation farming
  • Even more reputation farming…
  • Oh and another rep grind…

Yes… I know WoW is an MMO, and playing an MMO means you gotta grind… So there is no need for any “grinds is part of MMOs, so maybe MMOs are not for you” replies.

I think my issue is that I joined WoW during the “borrowed power era”, and was quickly overwhelmed by the long weekly/daily “to-do list” we had thrown at us, as well as the MANY… MAAAAANY borrowed power mechanics…

Which I’m glad they fixed now. But now my brain is associating ANY rep/renovn grind as “a bad thing”. Which ALSO means that I don’t actively look into “what there is to grind”… :grimacing:

I really enjoy WoW  and I put in my fair share of hours into it. But I’m stuck… … …

I log in every day… And I for the life of me can only think of one thing to do… “Level a character”.

It’s not that I am a “altoholic by choice” (who is? :joy:)… But I do it because I can’t help but focus more on my character, rather than “big picture stuff”… So whenever I’m bored, I don’t seek out content to do… Instead my brain tells me “it’s because the class I play isn’t fun, so find a new one to make the game fun again”…

And I think this is caused by me not looking at WoW as “a world with lot’s to do”, but instead as “just my character”… Does that make any sense? I hope what I say is relatable to people.

So I’m curious… What do you guys spend your time doing in WoW? What makes you log in every day, and what do you spend hours in the game doing?

I hope to hear something that I would enjoy doing, to help me “learn to play WoW properly”, since I consider my brain damaged by 2 REALLY borrowed power heavy expansions. Not really the best introduction to a new player. :joy:

With all due respect you really gotta chill on the emotes it makes your post very annoying to read.

Anywho, my advice? Give Classic WoW a shot. It sounds like you like levelling? Levelling in Classic WoW is a lot slower than in Dragonflight, and can be a relaxing and nice break from the higher pacing in modern WoW.

Busted out laughing. If you’re struggling to find something to do in a game that has 15+ years of content, you need to start with maybe opening your eyes.

The game is designed for you to do whatever you want to do.
Collect mounts
Collect Pets
Do achievements
Do questchains
Play the auction house for gold
Do your dailys/weeklys
Do reputations/Renowned
Do dungeons/Mythic+
Do raids for gear
Do old raids for transmog?
Do BGs
Climb rating in arena
World PvP fun

Idk, there’s so much to do, after a few months break, it becomes overwhelming, and I’ve been playing the game for over a decade, and I still don’t lack anything to do.

take break and after a month or two you’ll be back trying to do everything you listed up there .
if you insist that you want to play the game then i can tell you what i’m doing, i have an aim of reaching 2k m+ rating before this season ends so i’m doing that on the other hand i’m leveling alts from the classes i saw in m+ that looks fun . if you’re not interested in pushing key then you can try to have another goal for yourself like some people try to do %100 ATT or mythic raiding , loremaster etc. having a goal is always better even if it’s a boring or an unnecessary one .

Thanks for being helpful and telling me about what drives you to play WoW. :slightly_smiling_face: You took the time to read my post which I appreciate.

Telling me “to open my eyes” or “complaining about my usage of emotes” like the two above, isn’t exactly the help I was seeking. :joy: (no offence to the other two). I was curious about what made people “feel driven to open WoW, and what excited them when they logged in”. :slightly_smiling_face:

Hmmm it may sound silly, but I never actually set a “goal to accomplish”. I have always just logged in, done a few BGs, roamed the world for WPvP, or farmed mounts/TMOG… But there was never a higher purpose in mind.

I never asked myself “why I should get renown with a faction”… Or “why I am doing PvP”…

I have always just kind of “logged in and done whatever in-game activity that was right in front of me”.

It might be a lack of a goal that has gotten in my way, and made me focus too hard on my character, rather than playing the content. :man_shrugging: I’m a horrible at doing “active research”, which is often needed in a game like WoW to excel at it hehe, since there is so much info and content to unpack.

Grind is fine as long as:

  1. What you are grinding has decent level meaningfulness.
  2. Is done via an interesting, engaging, and fun system.
  3. Isn’t excessive.

Sadly, pretty much the entire grind done in WoW is opposite of those points.
Collectibles are so abundant that getting another things is as valuable as collecting dirt on the side of the road. No one cares about achievement, because they are either dead easy, or they were bypassed in some way, so skill wasn’t involved 99% of the time.

The only things which I kinda enjoyed was crafting due to new improvements, and even this experience was shot in the face by the absurd level of gating, and boring reagent acquisition.

WoW has become, a very boring hamster wheel.

I don’t think I mind the “hamster wheel” that much, as long as I feel the reward isn’t meaninglessly thrown away the next patch.

That was my main issue with borrowed power. :joy: it was a lot of work for nothing.

I really like the way you put this. It’s a good checklist for helping myself figure out WHICH of the many things you can do in WoW, that I might give a go at. :slightly_smiling_face:

You better set a goal for yourself
Be it clearing a raid and getting Ahead of the curve
Or getting 2500 rating in mythic+

Or since you enjoy leveling then perhaps getting ‘Herald of the Titans’ achievement
Which requires you killing a raid boss at level 80 (35 now?) while equipped with Ulduar level gear, you can find other people on wow achievements discord to do this with them

Or you can do loremaster

Or you can aim for getting the mage tower mount which requires clearing 7 different challenges on 7 different classes/specs

In the end you got to set a goal
And it’s up to you to decide what that goal might be

I will tell you how i do it. First of all i got time on spend on it like 5 hours weekdays and like 12 or more on sat/sunday.

Always i try to have my char ready with the current expansion meaning max the reputations, covenants and play they new expansion raids and m+ (let’s note here i always play 1 class not alts).

After that i focus on some mounts / mogs / reputation i would love to have from previous content.
If you play a lot of alts you gonna need a lot of time and the chance to get burn out.

frankly speaking as someone who plays since TBC:
if you do not enjoy at least 1 of the big 3 (raid, pvp, m+) this game has only grinds/collection to offer.
If you are also not interested in the usual gear treadmill, I think the game in general is not worth playing for you

I think Legion has conditioned a lot of players to have a daily grind which for many of us just became chores we had to do in order to stay competitive/keep up, before we could do things we found fun. I do appreciate that some struggle what to do with themselves without Blizzard specifically giving them a chore list.

What players find fun varies a lot. I really appreciate that the game has dialled back on the chores so that I can just log on and play. Legion was the worst of them all and it really burnt me out having to slog through. I could guarantee a legendary a week providing I did a huge amount of content. It was insane, I nearly quit.

My guild is currently on a raid break but normally I would raid twice a week and at the start of seasons I would do my 8 M+ for vault however atm I only really care about getting one +20 done on my main.

I enjoy that I only have to clear world quests twice a week now. I do miss the gold income and am finding this a very expensive. I have managed to level my profession support army and I do their weekly quests and tasks, I also make sure I do two LFR bosses on each one so that they get a vault and I get to collect the transmog. They all do a Siege and a Feast for those rewards. I used to do the hunts as well when I still needed renown but I’ve long maxed them all. I’m still working my way through buying all the appearances, I only collect what I an equip/wear on my paladin. The storms also have mounts/pets/appearances and I am working through those very lazily.

I have not enjoyed the overhaul to the professions, it seems very convoluted and the ranks of items have not been a good addition but that’s just my opinion. I’m working my way through the various professions and eventually will get them all maxed for the achievement.

I’ve done the raid and dungeon achievements, got KSM and AotC. Despite my friends attempts I’ve declined their invitation to join them doing PvP so far. They are trying for the PvP mounts.

I tend to mount farm in batches so my current batch is Underot, Mechagon, Necrotic Wake and the Nighthold. Before that I was doing the MoP world bosses.

I do the trading post (usually on the first or second day) and spend my currency. I do like the addition to the game to get some fresh looks (or old ones).

When TW is up I level alts or do the gear reward for the profession support army and my main if I still need transmog.

Sometimes I will target specific transmog I still haven’t collected and go and do some old content. Or I’ll play with friends doing stuff. It all just varies.

I prepared a human and an orc for the Heritage armour that is coming up.

I recently also started levelling a Worgen with a friend because it’s just fun to spend time together. Even though levelling is fairly boring, having seen and done it all many times.

The events can also be a fun time, a friend has arranged for us to go and try them together. It should prove to be a good laugh.

That was the perfect answer to my question. Thank you

I spend my time in WoW mostly farming old content for mounts/tmog, doing WPvP, or leveling alts. That’s pretty much it. :tipping_hand_man:

I love reading the long and detailed walkthrough of what you spend your time doing in-game, and it paints a very visualizing picture of what another player might do in-game.

If I compare your reply to what I do in-game… It’s no wonder I struggle keeping myself engaged with WoW.

Don’t get me wrong… I KNOW that I’m neglecting a lot of the available content. I’m not sitting here logging in every day, oblivious to the fact that there is a lot of content around me hehe.

I’m in the situation where I’m a 31 y/o family man who can’t sit on Discord and “talk”, without it bothering the people around me. And I don’t play with anyone besides my friend mainly does casual PvP, so “socially” I don’t do content outside of Random BGs.

My real issue here is that I don’t know how to approach WoW, or where to start playing the game like “a normal WoW player” does it.

So reading your long reply gives me a pretty good roadmap on how to approach the game.

Totemtoez also brought up a very good point:

So if “grinding” isn’t something I wanna spend all my time doing, then I will probably have to look more into a “goal” to accomplish, within those 3 areas of content.

Thanks everyone, I REALLY appreciate the replies. I’ll save your reply (Punyelf) and try a new approach with it as my guide.

Don’t bother with all this grindy stuff imo. Who cares how many mounts you have, or have many transmogs you’ve unlocked. The only mount I ever use is the headless horseman mount, why do I need more?

Find activities that you find FUN. Personally I like playing BGs - there are many ways to have fun in BGs, whether that’s playing the objectives, being sneaky and killing people behind enemy lines, defending an objective, attacking an objective etc etc…

You could be a sky scourge and dismount other players whilst dragon riding, and finishing them off if they don’t die from the fall damage. Lots of fun, especially around the world PvP zones!

I also think goals are overrated. I have enough of those in my professional life, I’d rather just log in when I’m tired and have some fun.

Pug keys m+

For most people I guess the goal is to get as much gear as possible, the ksm mount or even transmog that is gated by rating / raid.

I like to pug M+ with the limited time that I have and first set my goal to get KSM and then 2.4k for mogs then 2.5k for effects.
Of course KSM is easy but it is still time consuming.
So it all depending on how much time you also have to play

I don’t grind at all in this game anymore and was happy that they removed all that crap from DF. But it seems with 10.0.7 and 10.1 they reintroduce some crap that needs to be farmed daily again…

well the content you have in retoilet is

raid: last boss dies in 1 week after release so 1 week of content

m+: u can run the same dungeons for no reason and no rewards for all of the patch?

and then u can do the soup thing and… thats it. Thats retoilet.

I love the amount of emotes they used in their post. It made it enjoyable to read and very endearing.

Personally i enjoy farming for Mounts. Because there is so much different content i need to do in order to collect them. Some Mounts i skip if i find them too boring to collect.
So the mounts themselves are not the reward, the reward is they joy i have when i collect them.

just reading your game plans makes me tired. you must play far more hours a week than I could ever do what with work and life. As I work nights about 3 hours in the afternoon is it for me.
