What are AOTC mounts?
MoP and every expansion after had a mount reward for defeating the last boss of the expansion on Heroic before the next expansion went live.
These mounts do not carry a lot of prestige (you can buy a boost for them for 50-100k usually), but do look great, and if you didn’t play back during those expansions, you can’t get them again.
I would like for these mounts to be reintroduced, after the following expansion has passed. With Shadowlands finished now, that would mean the Uncorrupted Voidwing mount could be reintroduced, and the ones that came before it.
How could you reintroduce them?
There are a few options. Trading Post is the easiest one, but personally, I find that boring. These mounts had to obtained while current, and although relatively cheap, still required you to do a raid. So… why not do that again?
Introducing: Remembering the (…)
Similar to Herald of the Titans, this would require you to have:
- The level cap of the Expansion that raid was in (SL 60 BFA 50, Legion 45, WoD 40, MoP 35)
- An item level similar to what raiders would’ve worn back then (Prob inbetween normal and HC ilvl) and it has to be gear from that expansion.
- No player with a higher level/ilvl may be present and chromie time must be disabled.
There would be a version of this achievement for every raid that gave an AOTC mount.
- Remembering the True Warchief = SoO = Kor’kron War Wolf
- Remembering the Iron Horde = HFC = Grove Warden
- Remembering the Legion = Antorus = Violet Spellwing
- Remembering the Old Gods = Ny’alotha = Uncorrupted Voidwing
- Remembering the First Ones = Sepulcher = Carcinized Zerethsteed
And if this idea is a success, it could even be further expanded on with other, older raids, with different rewards, like other removed prestige mounts (black proto drake, Trial of Crusader horses) or titles, toys, etc.
- Remembering the Scourge = Classic Naxx
- Remembering the Sunwell = Sunwell
- Remembering the Lich King = ICC
- Remembering the Worldbreaker = DS
If we want to keep it to mounts, these older raids could also be a great way to introduce high res models of existing, popular mounts. Naxx could give us a new proto drake. The Sunwell could give us an updated Ashes of Al’ar phoenix. ICC could give an updated Frostwyrm. DS could give an updated Twilight drake.
One small problem:
Trinkets, Legendaries and Tier sets from these expansions have been deactivated so they cannot be exploited. These items would need to be reactivated in these raids. Perhaps with a trigger of “If more than 5 people at level x are in Raid, no one at 70, activate”
Ofcourse I understand we can’t bring N’Zoth Corruptions or Artifact Abilities back, so we’ll just have to deal with that loss.
Why is this better than just putting these mounts on the Trading Post, or BMAH?
Simply to let old content not be wasted, and let people experience these raids properly again. Maybe not in their prime, but something similar to it.
End of expansion raids are some of the most fun and well designed raids in WoW and it is sad that the only way to experience them at the moment, is by running them for transmog, where you oneshot everything.
Back during the 15th anniversary we had an event where you could do sections of the Lich King, Heigan and… Ragnaros(?) fights. This was extremely well liked, and another reason why I think adding these achievements would be prefered over the Trading Post and BMAH. People want to do these raids in their prime. And those people likely also missed out on these AOTC mounts!
Conclusion:
I think adding these achievements, along with these old mounts and potential new rewards, would be well liked by collectors. They were never as prestigious as Mythic or PVP mounts, and adding rewards behind challenging content is always good.
Meanwhile, we recycle these old raids, and along with that a lot of the content of these expansions becomes relevant again during the gearing progress. Maybe people will farm Arcanocrystals from Withered Jim again?
