[INDIA, BSNL] Latency Heavy - Game almost unplayable

I’ve been subbed for more than 6 months now, with a standard 150-160ms latency. Been good enough for me. Since the last 10 days, its been crazy. With a minimum 500ms all the way to 4000+ms. I tried looking glass but couldn’t find Silvermoon under EU. It was only on US. So here are my WinMTR results for the 3 EU IPs.

I noticed that the jump from 150-160ms (my past normal) to 300+ happens in Paris (80.231.153.66). Is that a Blizzard server? The game is almost unplayable now. Please help.

I ran a test again early this morning. To check for congestion related lag. Congestion did seem to have an effect. The latencies of the problematic server and after seem to have dropped about 100ms. But its still unacceptable. Gameplay is not good. Here are the results.

There’s some packet loss happening in the first round of testing you did but in the second round of testing this seems greatly reduced. Not gone completely but reduced enough whereby it should be a dramatic improvement ingame.

It might be the packet loss isnt consistent though and is fluctuating every so often, often enough that it’s causing consistent lag ingame. Either way, the issue does appear to be in the routing between yourself and our game servers. Best thing to do would be to reach out to your Internet Provider and show them these results you have.

Highlight the middle section and show them the route your connection is taking is being impacted by packet loss. They should be able to identify the problems and work on a solution from there

Some observations

A whois, shows that my ISP’s (BSNL) domain, ends in the 7th line, 117.216.207.217.
Beyond that all servers seem to belong to TATA Communications. Except the 9th line, which seems to belong to the ‘Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA)’.
I’m assuming the servers giving the ‘No response from host’ are Blizzard servers. Correct me if I’m wrong.
The first big latency jump (~100ms from 60 to 160) happens in the Marseille (TATA) server.
The second big latency jump (~200ms from 160 to 360) happens in the Paris (TATA) server, between Blizzard servers.

So firstly
Regarding Observation 5, I just read another Tech Support thread. Please have a look.

This 165ms latency has been reported by everyone on Silvermoon EU. I think this is the same as my case; except for me, the latency is already 160ms and it jumps to 360+ms. So I would request you to check on this.

And Secondly
Before going to my ISP I need some background information. Without these, I’ll probably end up going back and forth.

I do not know how ISPs route traffic and whose responsibility it would be for packet loss in a certain server. Since, there is no packet loss within my ISP’s (BSNL) domain, why would they bother?
See Observations 1, 2, 3 & 4. In this situation, who am I supposed to approach to solve the issue?

The issues in that thread started all (it seems) at as57976, owner = Blizzard. Complete different story.

They still send their (your) traffic to another peer. If this peer performs badly they can lower the priority and use others instead.

10 hours after the last test
Packet losses have gone down to almost nothing! Latency drops remain the same as before. And these are peak hours. In game latencies are at ~1300ms.

Most servers that gave ‘No response from host’ , are now responding. Packet losses are zero on most servers. Latencies remain the same. In game latencies remain very high, 2000+ms. Game unplayable for a while now.

Packet losses are zero on almost servers. The server with the 200ms jump has a 95% loss! Latencies remain more or less the same. In game latencies are currently 600+ and rising. Game is barely playable.

And something which I didn’t notice earlier… the first 100ms jump was initially in Marseille. But since the last 3 diagnostics, that has shifted to Mumbai. Same latency jump, location shifted back one server.

I’m getting tired of posting test results. Latency jumps are still the same ~100ms and ~200ms. Only change is that the first jump (~100ms) has jumped forward again from Mumbai to Marseille.

Either way, the game is pretty much unplayable with 1000+ms ingame lag. What’s the point of having a six month sub and a 100% exp bonus, when you can’t do anything at all? I have already sent a mail to my ISP. I hope something gets done from Blizzard’s side as well.

Near zero packet losses, all the way to blizzard. Decent latencies <200ms considering the high latencies in the previous tests.

A quick whois showed the following:

10.50.123.137, 10.50.123.169, 10.50.123.201 are all “servers which are in use by many millions of independently operated networks, and are automatically configured in hundreds of millions of devices”. No issues here.

125.17.138.169 belongs to the ISP (Bharti Airtel). No issues here either.

182.79.134.120, 182.79.142.78, 116.119.44.234 also belong to the ISP (Bharti Airtel) which are the servers where the first major latency jump happens (about 120-150ms). I should probably ask them to check this out.

After this, its just smooth sailing to Amsterdam (80.249.208.83) and then on to Blizzard. The game just became totally playable to me.

The funniest thing, my fiber line consistently clocks ~95Mbps and the mobile line clocked barely 5Mbps on a speedtest.

The strange thing here is, the first big latency jump has aways been ~150ms. Coincidence? Something technical? No idea.

@Jingoraitin, thanks for the response. Apparently it doesn’t seem like the packet loss itself, just a routing issue. Hopefully I can get my ISP to reroute it.

did u find a fix? 80.231.153.66 this ip also causes packet loss for me i’ve contacted my isp they said they can’t do anything not that they accepted they can’t do anything or not willing to but their questions seems botlike so i gave up.

I was playing on my mobile tether for a couple of days instead of the fibre line, so didn’t notice this. I connected today just to check for any changes.

My fibre line ISP (BSNL) didn’t respond back (didn’t expect them to). But they actually seem to have done something. In game latencies now hover around 200ms, with an occasional 300ms, but the game is very much playable.

But the latency jump at Marseille (TATA Communications) server remains. And as you said, 80.231.153.6, also TATA, has massive packet loss (90%).

Right now it’s off peak time. So I’ll wait for few hours and post some test results.

i also switched mobile and improvement was huge i couldn’t believe that mobile beats cable network but since everybody at home around globe everyone is connected to their home’s network and this causes overload i guess and since almost nobody uses mobile net it makes mobile net more viable for time being. 4g beats fiber just wow.

Here are the latest test results. Other than a couple of % of packet losses here n there, not much change due to higher traffic. BSNL really did do something I guess. What they did, I have no idea. Next step is to contact TATA Comms, to see if they can do something with their servers.

maybe you or your ISP can get TATA to do something since you live in India? I tried to look them up but they are kind of huge company and since im not their direct customer i don’t think i can even contact them. I post my tracert it’s quiet hours but packet loss persists.

I doubt my ISP will do anything beyond what they’ve already done. I did find a generic customer care email for TATA Comms. after a bit of searching. I sent them a mail with the WinMTR results, requesting them to forward it to the relevant tech support guys. Can only wait and watch now.

The CC exec was polite enough, but clearly said that unless I’m a customer they won’t be able to raise a ticket directly, and I would have to do it internally through my ISP.

So I’m currently working with my ISP by providing regular WInMTR stats to them. I wonder how long it will take to get this solved. Posting the latest diagnostics here.

As usual, it is the TATA Comms network, all the way from Mumabi to Paris which is giving the latency spike. But suddenly there is some packet loss within Blizzard network as well thats likely temporary.

I would like to request Blizzard. Can you please raise the matter with TATA Comms from your end too? Since this is such a long standing issue, maybe if you guys also insist upon TATA Comms from your end along with my ISP, this issue might get sorted out.

And also the title of this thread is currently tagged with [INDIA, BSNL]. It is a bit misleading. Although my ISP is BSNL, the major issue is with TATA Communications. It should actually be [INDIA/EUROPE, TATA COMMUNICATIONS]. Please change it.
