Ion intervew

i like what he said, what do you think?

only topic left uncovered is the issue with multiscum harvesting all resources in your shards and leaving you with only option to buy from AH or waste time

also saw Preaches stream and was suprised that lvl 50 char couldnt 1 shot a mob in WotLK area which was lvl 30 ( grey ) - perhaps old raids wont be as assesible by alts.

I always feel like theres a yawning chasm between what Ion says and what his team delivers. Island expeditions and warfronts titters

It also irks me that every expansion he manages to take something away that people like for no discernible benefit
-“Ooh, you’re camera is zoomed too far out, we feel it adds to the experience if all you can see is the bosses buttcrack and epilepsy inducing closeups of spell effects”
-“Ooh, you’re having too much fun crafting big pulls, better make sure that hellfire covering 30 mobs only really hits 5 of them cos ‘reasons’”

  • “We found people enjoyed rerolling M+ keys, so we put a stop to it!”

Colour me jaded but I’ll wait and see.

Regarding this i have high hope that 5 cap target means dungeons are designed for this. And maybe trash mobs wont hit like a wet nudle mostly except special mechanics/casts which you need to remember.
If its done approprietly it can be smth i enjoy.
enable more classes to shine and not just best AOE boiz team havoc outlaw outlaw

as fun as reaping was calling los them and use CDs to burn them as serious strats i would not.

thats a real shame. we all want to have agency over what we play, but i guess its was done to keep LF tab alive and not just 30 FH keys offers

I think Ion understands what needs to be done more than the community does.

The community, WoW community has turned into a sort of mob that complains about systems and then gets really pitch-forky when it doesn’t happen, all the while not understanding the big picture of the moving parts of why that was done or can’t happen.

The whole crying over the Covenant system and how you should be able to switch up and basically switch the covenant abilities like you would another glorified talent tree. It’s just another situation where people are trying to weasel their way to victory in some shape or form.

Many people only want to play WoW with the best, the easiest, least amount of resistance/challenge which means certain specs, abilities, classes so that they’re always in a position of having all the strengths and no weaknesses. I’m glad that Ion isn’t giving into what these people want because IMO these are the kind of people that ruin the game.

These are the people who make decisions based off very superficial things in order to make something work and leave the player out of it. It kills any sense of variety, takes the character out of the game and just makes it about statistics, you know what is most likely to succeed.

I hope Shadowlands brings more of the player back into the game like expansions have done over the years, kills the OP class in the expansions so that those players don’t just cruise through an entire expansion on easy street and the game forces you to make choices that you have to live with instead of just being able to sort of “swap” it out.

Of course though this means the community will force players to level up certain characters to join certain covenants for certain roles “because it’s the best” and then complain about it being non-alt friendly, because they want everything to be as ideal and easy as possible but I still hope Shadowlands tries to force players to really have to go through a lot of drama in order to do that so that the community will have to adapt and try to make their current guild rosters and different combinations of players work regardless.

My greatest gripe with " target cap " is

I’m fine with bladeflurry hitting 5 mobs, im fine wit fury warrior hitting five mobs.

I’m NOT fine with bladestorm hitting 5 mobs, same goes for cleave and whirlwind.

Spells like frost nova, shockwave, shadowfury, piercing howl, blizzard, eye beam, hellfire, rain of fire, immolation aura etc

Should always not have a cap.

I’d rather blizzard designed the game much more RPG like in a way that instead of " target capping " they make it so spells make sense and are balanced accordingly.

A blizzard can deal a HUGE amount of damage to a huge amount of mobs, but the drawback is it takes a long time to cast is perfectly acceptable in my opinion.

So atm, I have a stance of wait and see, but so far my hopes for shadowlands have been crushed as mastery deep wounds still exists :frowning:

Having AOE capped to 5 in FH sounds painful, but in KR not that much imo
So I am still interested to see how are these changes are reflected and implemented in the new dungeons

Gotta watch these lucky connected dudes on twitch which I hate cause I am not watcher but a player, obviously giving me a player a way to see it for myself is a no no :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

I don’t like this man. He’s the type of person who’s words don’t carry any weight.

Blizz - we will do something about essences.

Players - make account wide with currency or whatever.

Blizz - nope you still have to grind on alts.

What they say and what they deliver - I have lost faith.

About AoE cap - it’s nothing new, we played wow with AoE cap in WoLK.
Bladefurry, FoK, Blizzard, Seed of corruption, volley, starfall, bladestorm, swipe, thunderclap etc spells had no limit.
Divine storm, whirlwind, Heart strike, H blast, Cleave, Revenge, Mangle, Maul etc spells have limited target.

Did you catch how he described not getting the items you want inGame for weeks and months? “An exciting challenge to overcome”.

He just uses a soothing reasoning to manipulate people in understanding in his point while not addressing the actual issue that this is an unfun and consumer-unfriendly practice, especially when we’re talking about weapons.

Use to love Ion and had huge respect for the guy,but now i am just cautious regarding his words, promises best thing is to w8 out and see on release.(hence i didnt preorder Shadowlands)
I heard alot of things that sound good but lets see how it turns out.

Heard lot of good things, but not having masterloot option. Not kewl. Loot distribution annoying af right now. You get piece you want, everyone is going to whisper you-“Do you need, do you need” and when you don’t, you can’t give away, because it automatically became soulbound.

-you forgot “bro do you need”,“ay m8 you need”

Tell that to High Elves

Is it just me that got the impression that Shadowlands is going to be BfA 8.4? A daily grind to get currency to run Torghast and then just more of the same, more raids and mythic+. Nothing in this interview convinced me that they are willing to move to a different direction.

They aren’t moving away from their core design but make things just better for the overall player experience.

  • Their approach for stuffing as many changes in early so they can be flexible in removing and testing is positive
  • For the AoE cap it feels like they’re doing it so they can make cleave abilities more powerful as a tradeoff, curious to see how that develops
  • I’m not sure why they’re asking people to specify what they mean with ‘revert the GCD changes’, they mean revert the GCD changes. If I had to guess it’s mostly take cooldowns off the GCD
  • No Master Loot returning doesn’t really affect me, but I still think it’s weird that loot options were removed and personal loot was shoved down everyone’s throats
  • Tier sets returning is good, but I don’t understand why they’re skipping a patch for it. Not every m+ player does raiding, so I think they’re overly concerned for tier sets killing m+ gear slots
  • I’m happy with the stance on RNG because it means it’ll be toned down.
  • I’m still very worried about covenant choices being dominated by what type of content you play (pvp, m+, raiding, etc) because I don’t really play just one type of content within the same spec even.
  • I’m a bit miffed at the “Is this game even an RPG anymore?” comment, it’s your game to develop, you brought it where it is today. It feels more like a marketing line then a developer line
  • I’m very confused about them thinking that titanforing/warforing/corruption is a motivator for doing m+ keys and think they should not waste time in looking into things, the higher difficulty rewarding better gear and the chest reward being slightly better then the actual drops is fine as it is.
  • It feels like Thorgast keys will be kind of like the new AP as in they’re the things to farm, altho instead of it being passive mandatory power progression they’ve now changed it to something that allows for active optional power progression, which is a good thing
  • Balance has always been questionable, but I’m glad they saw that 8.2 being promised as a fix to the problems of the expac (which was mainly azerite) while it was just an extra system on top of Azerite with no changes to Azerite was a generally undesirable thing to have happened.
  • Legendary recipe’s should drop from all (instanced? with maybe a pvp quest reward for Warmode) content, incase people don’t like Thorghast and don’t want to feel like they get forced into this.

All in all I thought it was a positive interview

“Better player experience” is a totally subjective term. One would think that after the flop that BfA was they would have tried a totally different approach.

“On all fronts, Shadowlands should be better. There’s no AP system – one of the things driven alt unfriendliness.”

Hallelujah I can finally do what I like doing - levelling tons of alt and being a filler for the guild.

“Randomness of Procs: The variation in performance from pull to pull should largely depend on your skill. Things like how many times did Infinite Stars procs or your Vision of Perfection procs is too important right now.”

Sweet! More player input!

My two biggest peeves with current expansion are changing, I’m happy enough about this.

The ilvl restriction should be removed, and masterloot should never come back.

Uhm, did I miss something or don’t we have to grind this anima garbage that is just AP in disguise???

also while the legendary recipes are account wide, I 100% sure you cannot craft it on your main to send it to your alt.
Now the question is just how many things you need to grind for that legendary, might still take weeks or more
