I recently downloaded the spy addon which essentially just scans nearby enemy players and alerts you to their presence. You can also add them to a kill on sight list which just gives you more of a warning when theyre nearby.
Is this sort of stuff against the ToS?
It’s an addon so it’s not against the ToS, otherwise Blizz would just disable it.
As for myself ? Yes for me it is akin to cheating.
Hope they do add it to a blacklist though. Quite a big impact on world PvP, and a huge disadvantage on stealth classes.
As far as I’m aware it only alerts you of a stealthed target if they enter your vicinity unstealthed.
From what I can see using it, it doesn’t alert you about anything you couldn’t see yourself.
The difference is mostly a stealth may ride into an area, spot you before you spot them drop into stealth and start their approach, with this, you will be notified that they have dropped into stealth and start being defensive.
And if I see a much to high level enter my area or just not feel like PvP I can enter stealth before they actually spot me. The Addon will tell them I am there anyway and spam AoE to find me for example.
In general, it ruins surprise attacks, which to me is a big part of the PvP realm experience.
Traditionally players could play with their combat log visible to pick up on certain events. But that would take a certain level of skill / attention that most would not do. Addons do far too much, Blizz should just open up more UI customisation in the default client and ditch addons completely.
Yeah I understand how that would ruin your chances of avoiding detection or launching a surprise attack. But then theres addons such as Gladius on retail that dictate every ability an enemy uses.
I’m not aware of any addons which are against ToS. Basically if you downloaded it from curse or wowinterface and it has enough downloads, it can’t be forbidden.
Some people might consider those addons not fair. So it’s up to you to decide whether you want to use something like that.
Blizzard has carefully developed the game’s API. They know what they have allowed intentionally so community can take it and extend wow’s basic interface.
Is part of the game but instead of blizzard the developer is someone from the community. They can remove it by disabling the API if its ruining the immersion or if it has exploits that aren’t aware or whatever but until then its not cheat. Everyone can use it.
Well yes I know how it works, hence why I said it is allowed otherwise action would have been already taken
That addon has been around since Vanilla so perfectly ok to use.
At the moment I’m using it to add people who gank me to a kill list, but I can definitely see it being problematic when used as a tool to gank people.
erh what?
Lil’johny rogue rides along, see somebody killing mobs he would like to murder.
Lil’johny aint so smart so he keeps riding and goes into stealth close enough for it to register in his intened marks combat log ( as oposed to riding away undetected, stealthing and going back - no sprint )
How does spy! turn this situation into Lil’johny getting ganked?
I’m not sure I understand your hypothetical, if “Lil’johny” is the one looking to gank all he has to do is run/ride around until the addon detects a player. It can detect players you dont have line of sight on which is the issue I have with it.
The addon can only detect if you cause damage or cast spells. and only if you do so in combat log distance ( visual draw distance ).
So if Lil’johny is smart and spots an unwary target while riding around he rides back until the target unrenders stealths and walks back.
Using sprint to get there faster defeats the purpose at even in stealth I believe that would register in the combat log.
