I dinged 60 a few days ago.
So far I did MC / ZG in greens/blues + 3/3 bloodvine gear and some pre bis and it felt super easy. No mechanics no strats and bosses just melt in 1 minute.
I keep getting rejected to aq20 due to bad gear, and my question is if aq is really such a big increase in difficulty or its just a principle that they dont wanna bring me when I dont have optimal gear?

You don’t need “optimal gear” for AQ20 but if you bring a raid of people wearing only greens and blues I don’t think it’s gonna be a fun experience.
Its a newly released raid, plenty of people want to do it.
So you can easily reject some low geared dps and get a well geared one instead.
It should be a lot easier to be invited if you try closer to the time AQ20 is about to reset
AQ 20 isn’t really a big step up in difficulty, but as long as people need most stuff there they want to bring people who can drag their weight. Noone likes losing bis items to that guy doing less dps than the tank.
As for AQ40, as a mage you really don’t have anything to do there if you are decked out in mostly greens and bloodvine. You will get one shot frequently if it’s +fire damage greens, and if it’s “of the eagle” stuff your dps will be awful.
Most servers also have plenty of mages, they have no reason to bring you if they can expect several others to join within a few minutes.
AQ20 is a step forward after ZG. It’s harder, but overall it’s not a hard raid. You can go with green/blue gear and pre-raid BiS/ZG gear, but if all your raid is gear like you, you’ll fail at some boss and experience painfull wipe.
AQ40 is a step forward after BWL. Early boss are not hard and can be completed by a raid with MC/ZG/AQ20 gear, but after Huhuran you will experience some trash that are hard if your raid is not prepared and you’ll fail on Twin Emp, and after Twin Emp the trash are absolutely insane. C’thun is not hard. Viscidus is the hardest boss.
Never understood why some people say Viscidus is hard.
I guess for alliance it’s a little more challenging since they don’t have Shamans for poison removal and chain heals but other than that you should reliably get it down in 1/2 phases with sappers/dynamites.
Visi is hard on your Wallet. If you use 10 elixirs of poison its easy and you spend about 80 gold on a boss.
AQ20 - is a joke.
Go ahead and complete the raid with white items 20 men.
The most people want faceroll, 0 wipes, zerg/rush, fast cleave aoe raids to have fun in wow, that is why you are rejected.
They think they do.
