I don’t know where you live but in the UK it’s not illegal to be racist. However things like racial discrimination are not permitted, or inciting racial hatred and some crimes may be considered racially motivated etc.
Yeah, I guess at this point it’s just a choice of technical terms. It may not be “illegal” per say, but go use racial slurs against your colleagues and we will see how long you keep that job…
My main point I suppose was to say that such things could and would already get you banned from WoW way before the social contract existed.
To be honest the racial part is irrelevant, it’s the fact that you are slurring a colleague that would get you into trouble. Although granted it may be treated more severely if it’s racially motivated.
I agree the social contract didn’t bring anything new, all those things were already stipulated in the terms of service (that no one reads). However it did mean Blizzard updated the report system people and gave more options.
At the end of the day, I’d say that my real problem with all this is that during their “update”, Blizzard also made the process much more automatic, and banning people for things they say without any human checking what’s actually going on is a problem, as we have seen with people getting banned ONLY for the quantity of reports they receive regardless of what they posted or where/when they posted it.
Any racist, xenophobe or bigot in general doing this is not a very smart one. The smart ones don’t go full blown racist in public but rather join the most right wing party (but still one that’s legal and able to have a political sway) in regards to stances on immigration and inclusion of minority groups while keeping it on the low. It’s a lot easier to influence public discourse over time that way.
It had already been a lot more automatic for closing in on a decade. Sadly comes with them trying to cut costs where possible in recent years. Granted, i reckon it’s more likely to be outliers in the system where someone is being mass reported to a severe degree and i’d wager that the ones constantly complaining about others being soft are quite likely to report opposing viewpoints as well.
It’s telling when some go on a rant about others having some manner of decency online in how they interact and how their offensive “banter” isn’t really viewed as funny outside of their own closer friend circle.
Just like irl there’s a time, place and audience for certain kinds of comments, jokes and remarks but some have just gotten overly used to it “just being the internet” and that anything goes in a relatively public space there. Even being lowkey bigoted and racist.
No he wasn’t doing a direct attack.Only that he used my sentence to imply that people like me shouldn’t have the right to report someone because they can’t tell right from wrong.
He doesn’t know me or how i behave in the game or when i report. He just assumes something from his own experiences and not only he is not using his own words to express himself but my words as well.
Those who complaint about the social contract, instead of saying their “stuff” 10 times in dungeons they say it for 3.It is the compromise they cry about.Bottom line it helps with using the brain a little before “typing”.And if someone deserves it take the report and be proud about it.
I dislike people that tell others what is the correct way of talking and get offended and all that.
But i absolutely hate the people who frame it in such a way where its like “im a tough cookie in a ever softening world” but you actually barely interact with anyone outside of your social media and WoW.
Its just about the cringiest thing hapening these days tbh:Dd
